Linda, I'm sure there's a list showing the German-Czech names of towns and villages on the Internet (just not sure how to access, perhaps a search). Many current (especially European mfg) maps still show both the Czech name of a town and, if it had one, the German name. As far as the word "Schlesisch" is concerned, this may refer to Silesia, formerly joined to the Czech Lands, now mostly with Poland & ?. I believe a bit still resides in CR. Thanks for reminder on Troppau. Barbara BIERMANN HARTLEY had posted a question in Bavaria list saying she was having trouble finding a town, even using the Shtetl Seeker. Her search was for "Oppau". I, too, tried to do a search on the town in various search engines to no avail. So the only conclusion to which I could arrive was that this was either transcribed from handwriting or the village no longer existed. As a possible German town, Oppau sounded odd. I guess this should remind us all that transcribing old documents requires diligence on all our parts. Thanks again for "Troppau." On Sat, 29 Jan 00 13:56:06 -0000 "Linda K.
