My husband's great, great grandparents emigrated from Thiersheim, Bavaria in 1867 with seven children and older brother, Christian Arzberger ; their names being Johann Wolfgang Arzberger (b. 1829) and Anna Barbara Klughart (b. 1831). Is anyone researching either of these two family names and/or the Thiersheim area? There is also a village named Arzberg southeast of Thiersheim not far from the eastern border in northeastern Bavaria. Any suggestions as to locations of church records or local researchers? Violet
I have finally found Edwin's gr., grandmother's maiden name, and her parents and siblings. his great grandmother give's her father's birthplace as Bavaria. a check of several sites, including Google, shows this to be a difficult name to find anything on. could it have been changed from another spelling? I see Dudenhoeffer as a possibility, but I am truly at a loss as to what it may have originally been. many thanks for any help figuring this one out. regards, Cornelia Jacob Dunifer/Dunnheffer/Donnheiffer/Dannhoeffer b. abt 1804 Pennsylvania, USA/Bavaria d. bef 1860 m. Thanks to George, Steve, Janice, and Stefan for their help in clarifying my Aschaffenburg/Reistenhausen research. The Roots-L lists are invaluable in our genealogy research, and I am very grateful for this help. Sincerely, Noreen Alexander Manzella(in sunny-at-last Connecticut,USA)

Aschaffenburg IS a city. Maybe in recent years it has incorporated very nearby villages. My great-grandmother was born in Röllfeld, and my great-grandfather was born in Grosswallstadt - they were married in Grosswallstadt. Those two villages are within about 15 miles of the city Aschaffenburg, but nevertheless have their own records of births, marriages, etc. I would assume that old records listing Aschaffenburg really mean that city and not other villages. Census records, on the other hand, are often inaccurate, especially if the census taker was trying to communicate with immigrants who were not facile with the English language. My greatgrandmother never learned English, so the 1900 census record spelled the family name wrong (Sangle instead of Zengel) and listed my great aunt as Conrad the son instead of Cora (actually Cunigunda) the daughter!
