You can use the ShtetlSeeker or the GeoServer to locate towns or cities. The GeoServe will give you more specific info, whereas the Shtetl is a map. http://wwwjewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm http://www2.genealogy.net/gene/www/abt/geoserv.html Nancy harveyfam wrote: > > Hi List, I was wondering if someone could tell me where Giessen Germany is? I am looking for a coordinator who will give time and energy to maintain the Baden-Wurttemberg site as part of WorldGenWeb Project. Please contact if you are very interested in taking over the site from the present coordinator, Frank Mailänder who has to step down because of his election to his city muncipal counil in his town in Germany. If there are several interesting in taking over, Frank and I will discuss who has time and willing to do it before selecting the coordinator. Baden-Wurttemberg site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~deubadnw if you wish to check it out. There are few policies governing WorldGenWeb Project http://www.worldgenweb.org And as usual we are always looking for any volunteers to run and maintain OTHER countries in South America, southern Europe, Africa, Asia and Pacific where the volunteers are extremely needed badly. Many countries are currently without any coordinator. W. David Samuelsen
Good Morning List My husbands gggrandfather is George Wachtler and his wife Kate Wagner. He immigrated to the US in June of 1844 through the port at Baltimore MD. The passenger list says his last known address was Ehingen. According to a book I read at the FHC it states that a lot of Wachtler's resided at Donau, Ehingen, Wurttemburg. I'm not sure how these addresses go but thought it would be a good thing to check for them in this area. How do I go about finding info from this area. I ordered a film of church records from this area but of course did not find anything. They were protestants and not catholic. I find German records very hard to read but I guess I will become more familiar with them. Any help in this area would be appreciated. Is there any place that I could write to for the info they needed to have in order to immigrate? They sailed from the the port at Bremen. Thank you very much for your time and effort, it is greatly appreciated. Dawn Rocky comfort, MO

Any researcher tell me, I can mayde find this informations into the census (Volkszaehlungs-listen), or in "Buergerbuechern", or in "Testamente". There's one snag : I can't go to Germany !! The Palatinate or the Pfalz was once part of Bavaria. At one time I was lead astray by my 2g grandfather indicating on census and naturalization records that he was from Bavaria. I eventually found that he was from the Pfalz near the Alsatian border. This URL will lead you to the history of the Pfalz and 3 maps of the Pfalz from 1789-1818: http://w3g.med.uni-giessen.de/gene/reg/RHE-PFA/rhein-p.html#gener Good luck in your research. I have just begun research in Germany for the surnames GRILLMEIER & FRAUENHOLZ (may be spelled wrongly). They were from Bavaria. So far those are the only surnames I have. As I don't speak or read German, can someone post German links that have an English version. If anyone has those lines, I would love to hear from you. Thanks! Donna (Ohio, USA)

If you got that name from a census, they frequently abbreviate. That is probably Hesse.
