    3. Does anyone know of a site where I might find old German script alpha? I am searching documents and need to familiarize myself with it. I took German in college ( many years ago), but I am having real difficulty with the script. I can decipher modern characters fairly well. Thanks for any help you can give. 3. It seems to me, that in USA everybody in previous times spelled just what he wanted ;-) (i.e. listened), whereas in Bavaria people tried to be more consistent. Is this taken as the reason to excuse sometimes careless spelling now? I for my side will try to be careful to spell names as I find them, since (even if it is not guaranteed) the likelihood that related people are recorded with the same spelling is higher than with different spelling. I think correct spelling (i.e. as found) is a rather important detail to find relations - at least inside Bavaria - and shouldn't be lost. 3. To the subscribers of this Bavaria mail list, I am awfully sorry to have created some anxious moments for your listowner, to have him remind me that we should use the above. Since my computer system is way behind recent developments, I don't know how my Schbell Tschecker works, and have to resort in using dicktschionaries and my old Schell Atlas for Ortsnamen. I do apologize that I started this trend, and until such time my system had an overhaul, I will keep my trap closed. Buy for now, John Helmut Merz, on beautiful Lake Ontario.

    1. [BAVARIA] : Correct Name Spelling
    2. Gerstacker
    3. In the Civil War an ancestor's name is spelled four different ways, two ways on his reenlistment papers. It is wrong in the Ohio Records and on a county memorial. The marriage record is spelled Graus, later it was Krauss. The marriage record is Schlenk, later it was Schlenker. My aunt could not find her marriage record because Gerstacker was recorded as Gustacku. In one Census Sommer was recorded as Summer. In one family half the children used the first name, the other half the second name. GOOD LUCK Bob Gerstacker

    3. John Helmut Merz This is being posted to the list in response to your comments. Place names spelling are irrevelant because whenever anyone who immigrated to America, is likely to have the names spelled phonetically rather than ACTUAL spelling to the English listeners and writers. And number one rule - don't criticize! Be polite in helping and do NOT criticize. Most of the subscribers do NOT have their spelling checkers in use at all the time. I don't. W. 1. [BAVARIA] Correct name spelling.
    2. John Helmut Merz
    3. Dear listers, time and again we hear the lament that names have been misspelled in the past by those ancient scribes, and on account of it we ave all those variations to content with when doing research. It is therefore kind of annoying when you read e-mail postings about names and places, and how careless those names and places are being typed out. It is important that more care is being taken, because our computers are so case sensitive and search engines will not find what you are posting if not typed correctly. If you look for GIESSEN one should write GIESSEN and not GEISSEN, should write NIEDER- and not NEIDER-, JOACHIM and not JAOCHIM, you get my drift? Cheers, John Merz and not Mertz. 1. [BAVARIA] FREITAG from Houssen & Witzburg
    2. David F Schmidt
    3. Sue Griffin asked: >Michael A. FREITAG b. Sept 9, 1864 in Witsburg?, Bavaria. He >immigrated to US in 1888 or 1890. He was the son of John FREITAG >b. Houssen, Bavaria and Eva Werthmann b. Houssen, Bavaria. They >were Catholics. Any idea on a church I could possible write to in >Witzburg or Houssen to see if there were any other siblings, etc. I believe that "Witzburg" is an Anglicization of Würzburg, a city located on the Main River southwest of Frankfurt am Main. Würzburg was a Catholic area, which matches the information that you give above. It is my understanding that Catholic church records from Würzburg and vicinity are held at a centralized location in Würzburg. You could start out by seeing what Catholic church records the LDS Church has microfilmed in Würzburg and vicinity (www.familysearch.org). Search the Family History Library Catalog listings. If LDS does not have microfilmed records, someone on this list should be able to give you the address of the office in Würzburg that has Catholic church records from that area. Keep in mind that Würzburg could refer to the surrounding area as well as to the city. If you don't find records in the city, you should consider this possibility. In that case, you may have to obtain all available records from the U.S. (i.e., New World) to see if any of them lists the town of origin. I believe that "Houssen" probably refers to Hessen, which is covers a wide area west and northwest of Würzburg. If you have not already done so, I would check the IGI (International Genealogical Index) listings for FREITAG at your local LDS Family History Center. You may find entries there that would give you the town in Hessen for John (Johannes?) FREITAG and Eva WERTHMANN. If not, I next would try to obtain all available records in the U.S. (i.e., New World) to see if any of them mentions a specific town for FREITAG or WERTHMANN. This would include the ship passenger list from the U.S. side. If the ship that they came on departed from Hamburg, be sure to check the Hamburg passenger list (i.e., record from the German side; available on microfilm at LDS Family History Center). That would give the town(s) of origin. David F. Schmidt Walnut Creek, CA, USA dfschmidt@earthlink.net

    3. I am looking for information on my great grandmothers family, Margaretka(Margaret) Gans. I have a good start but need to be pointed in the right direction. She was born in Wargolshausen 24 June 1867. According to my mothers cousin her fathers name was Mike Gans and he thought her mother was Albertina Stetinger. Some of her brothers and sisters were Anton, Florentia (married Marcus Krapf), Katharina (married a Knobling), Barbara (married a Nagel) and Albertina(?). Is there some where I can write to for Birth information? Will that give me the parents names? Any help or information I could get would be greatly appreciated. Thank You David Byers
