Also Houssen could be Hausen, which is 1.5 miles out of Bad Kissingen and is actually considered Bad Kissingen. Würzburg and Bad Kissingen are both in Lower Frankonia and about 60 kilometers apart. That might be a trace to look into. This is the address to the archive in Würzburg and the link below takes you to the HP, which lists all the places that Würzburg keeps records of. Any idea on a church I could possible write to in >Witzburg or Houssen to see if there were any other siblings, etc. I believe that "Witzburg" is an Anglicization of Würzburg, a city located on the Main River southwest of Frankfurt am Main. Würzburg was a Catholic area, which matches the information that you give above. It is my understanding that Catholic church records from Würzburg and vicinity are held at a centralized location in Würzburg. You could start out by seeing what Catholic church records the LDS Church has microfilmed in Würzburg and vicinity (www.familysearch.org). Search the Family History Library Catalog listings. If LDS does not have microfilmed records, someone on this list should be able to give you the address of the office in Würzburg that has Catholic church records from that area. Keep in mind that Würzburg could refer to the surrounding area as well as to the city. If you don't find records in the city, you should consider this possibility. In that case, you may have to obtain all available records from the U.S. (i.e., New World) to see if any of them lists the town of origin. I believe that "Houssen" probably refers to Hessen, which is covers a wide area west and northwest of Würzburg. If you have not already done so, I would check the IGI (International Genealogical Index) listings for FREITAG at your local LDS Family History Center. You may find entries there that would give you the town in Hessen for John (Johannes?) FREITAG and Eva WERTHMANN. If not, I next would try to obtain all available records in the U.S. (i.e., New World) to see if any of them mentions a specific town for FREITAG or WERTHMANN. This would include the ship passenger list from the U.S. side. If the ship that they came on departed from Hamburg, be sure to check the Hamburg passenger list (i.e., record from the German side; available on microfilm at LDS Family History Center). That would give the town(s) of origin. David F. Schmidt Walnut Creek, CA, USA dfschmidt@earthlink.net ==== BAVARIA Mailing List ==== Brother, Can you spare $10 dollars to support Rootsweb? To date I have not had a clear reply on what criteria used by Filby to include or exclude ship lists. I also discovered something else while getting ready to transcribe another ship (the one in 1885 - don't ask me to look up - it will be online), Filby included the ship list but OMITTED the Germans who were naturalized American citizens. Full ship lists will always be available at the istg.rootsweb.com site while the parts of lists concerning any part of German Empire including parts of Poland and of any obvious German surnames from other areas such as Russia, Switzerland, Hungary, Romania, Lithuania and elsewhere will be included on Germany site to assist anyone in narrowing to specific areas. Always two copies - one absolute full list at istg site at all the time. W. David Samuelsen "Jerry G. I have been told that many many Germans are not in the Germans to America book because only ship's list with 80% of the passengers being German were listed. I have no proof of this but neither side of my family has been listed. Mary Lou rootsweb supporter ---------- > From: W. Dear List, I am searching for any information on my 10th great grandfather Johannes Albrecht who came to America in 1732 with his wife Anna Barbara and their children. I have traced my line back to him and possibly his father Heinrich. Supposedly from Baveria. Just what part I don't know. Since I don't speak any German I have had a really hard time of it trying to contacting web sites in Germany. Any help at all will be appreciated. Sincerely, Lynnette Albright Hatcher
Thanks so much to all who have sent info on the above query. You have been a great help. Marianne

Earlier I posted about Str. Scandia 1891 - I forgot to mention one detail. This ship's list was completely omitted from the Germans to America book series despite the large number of Germans on the ship. W. David Samuelsen
Let you know I finished transcribed ship list of 806 passengers of Str. Scandia, arrived in New York 26 March 1891 from Hamburg, Germany Passengers came from: Prussia (all areas) Poland Switzerland Bavaria Wurttemberg Russia (both Poland & Lithuania areas) Mecklenburg Denmark Austria Hungary go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~wggerman/ and follow the links to Ship Lists - 1891. Good luck! Christine
Does anyone have any information on the following names in Bavaria, Ger. Anna Maria Riedman who lived in Butler, Morris County, NJ and died around 1922 mentioned the following in her will who were living in Bavaria in 1923. Anna Eisentraut, Josephine, Edmund and Elizabeth Rack and Margaretha Schmidt. Valentine Riedman living in Brooklyn was her executor and he died in Dec 1922. I am trying to pinpoint a town in Bavaria where Valentine Riedman was born in 1866. Was Anna Maria related to him? and how? Any help would be appreciated. Marie
