I had a relative named Kunigunda Vitzthum ... I suspect it was a popular name. The first time I saw it I thought it was misspelled. It is an interesting name. JeanieG731@AOL.com
I have a relative named Kunigunda Hes who married a Johann Zapf (born Jan 7, 1698/99). I wonder if Kunigunda was a popular name back then? I am writing a family history book and would like to include some ancient history of my ancestors in Oberfranken, Bavaria. My name origin is from the Fichtelgebirge area, somewhat west of Bamberg & Bayreuth. Does anyone know what Germanic tribes lived there before the Frankish invasion? Also I am told that the Fichelgebirge area has their own dilect that is different from the dilect of Bamberg,Bayreuth and Nurnberg. Any info would be great. I am told that the dilect is that of Nordbairisch where Bamberg,Bayreuth and Nuremberg the dilect is called OstFranlisch. The dilect that is spoken in the Fichtelgebirge (Fir Mountains) is the same dilect spoken around Regensburg, Naab and the Northern Bohemian Forest. I would appreciate any info. Thanks. I'm trying to locate info on Anton and Friedericke Lange Strasser of Bonn in 1796 and Koblenz by the Moselle in 1850. Xavier, their son, was born in Bonn 1796 and married Anna Maria May of Eltmann, Bavaria. They came to America via New Orleans in 1846 with 7 children: Jacob, Herman, Paul, Appolonia, Josephine, Sophie and Franciska, born 1831-1840 Wuerttemburg. I do know Xavier belonged to the St. John's United Church of Christ at his death in EVANSVILLE INDIANA in 1869. Anna Maria died there in 1888. They had a saloon, grocery and provisions store. His granddaughter Hattie was married by Julius Blass the minister of St. John's UCC in 1897 in Evansville. Please write if you know any Strassers anywhere.
Hi Jane: These towns are just west of Bad Bergzabern. Birkenhoerdt is on highway # 427 which runs northwest toward Pirmasens. Bollenborn is directly south about one mile on one of "the yellow roads".The towns are very close to the French Border and the town of Wissembourg, both of which are about 20 miles or to the south. This is from a current German Auto Atlas. Well worth the price if you are doing much searching in Germany. Both of these town can be found using the Jewish Shtetlseeker at http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm Just place town name and indicate Germany as the country and click to start search. Onviously, one at a time. You will be given a list of possibilities. Click on the coordinates of the town you want. You will be taken to Mapquest and then you can identify the red star which is the location of the town. Hope this helps, Mary Ann > Can someone tell me where Birkenhoerdt and Bollenborn are? Hallo, Herzlich Wilkommen! Dann nur "Start the Search" klicken. Hubenberg ist zu klein aber der rote Stern zeigt wo der Ort liegt. Halb-wegs zwischen Bamberg und Bayreuth. Leider kann ich nichts über die Neuners schreiben. Mary Ann Auf Englisch: Welcome! I will try a little German. I have just found the town of Hubenberg. I always search with the Jewish Shtetlseeker (URL above) One just has to type in the desired town and also Germany for the country. Then just click on "Start the search". Hubenberg is too small but the red star shows where the town lies. Halfway between Bamberg and Bayreuth. Unfortunately I can't write anything about the Neuners. I found a Bollendorf right on the border bettween Lunembourg and Rineland Palatinate a short distance northwest of Trier. Then I found a Birkenfield Southeast of Trier a short distance. That is the closest and could well be the modern day names. Hope this helps. Can someone tell me where Birkenhoerdt and Bollenborn are? The geoserver told me that Birkenhoerdt is in the Pfalz, Bavaria, and my later ancestor said he was b. in Bavaria. I guess what I'm asking is, what large city is Birkenhoerdt near? The geoserver did not find a Bollenborn. Bollenborn is where the ancestor above married his wife. Bollenborn is also supposed to be in the Pfalz, Bavaria. Anyone know where this place was? The two persons in questions are Francis BOLLINGER, b. 1790, and Elisabeth KLEM, chr 1794; they were married 1813. Was Francis a common pre-name (like Johann) in Bavaria at the time? And was Francis a shortened version on Franciscus? Francis all by itself seems so English to me. Jane in AZ thaia@goodnet.com
