Hi List, In the 1880 census for Cumberland, Allegany Co., MD John Wurzbacher's birthplace is listed as Byson or Byron? Has anyone ever heard of this? Hello It is also suggested that you might check the pre-registeration records for voting in the various areas they lived in. They may be at the courthouse. schoen@freewwweb.com
David, A good place to look would be the (American) Church records where your ancestor may have attended (particurlarly at the time of his death). Also try the "death records" at the courthouse in the county that he lived in, and try the local health dept. for a death record or death cerificate. Any of these might narrow the search for your ancestor's birth place, if not providing you with the actual town name. Larry ----Original Message---- Hi, I am new to the list and I am hoping that someone can answer a question for me. My g,great-grandfather, Johann (John) WURZBACHER appears in an 1880 US Census as living in Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland. His birthplace is listed as Bavaria. Now I know that Bavaria is a huge area. What would be the best way in finding out what part of Bavaria he came from? I have already checked his Citizenship record and it also states that he was from Bavaria. As you can see, this is not an awful lot of information to go by. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. David
I am attempting to research the historical information of these two towns. Particularly because my surname is BEHLING, Richard G. Information of any kind will be very much appreciated. If in fact my family name originated in these locales information on this is requested. Thankyou all in advance, RGB
Can anyone give some background information about "low" Dutch and "high" Dutch? I have no clue. Joan
My husband is descended from the Johann Wurzbacher family of Baltimore City and Baltimore County. Our Johann E Wurzbacher was born in 1825 in Selbitz, Oberfranken, Bavaria. He had a son named Johann Ehrhardt Wurzbacher born 1853 - nothing else known about him. I don't know if this could be your John, but in any case, you might check out Selbitz. I believe Wurzbachers still farm in that area. Elenora Green
I am interested in knowing what "low German" and "high German" means also. This has puzzled me for years. Thank you. JeannieG731@AOL.com

Hello to All, I need some advice! I have documented proof that my Bishop/Bischoff family prayed in language of "low dutch" after arriving in southwest Virginia in 1770's. I have found a marriage license in the Lutheran Church Records where a couple married in Ansbach in 1758. My question is; Would someone that belonged to the Lutheran Church in this time period in Ansbach, Bavaria, Germany would have later in America been considered speaking "low dutch". I am totally unfamiliar with Bavaria's dialects. Thanks for any advice. Doug Bishop in Columbus, Ohio, USA.

Hello, Does anyone out there know the origin of the surname HISSIM? My grandparents spoke German, their last name was HISSIM, but I can't seem to find any reference to this name outside PA and NJ. I've been banging against this wall for so long that ANY suggestions would be helpful. Thanks. Hi, I am a volunteer at a Family History Center of the Mormon Church. I just helped a patron the other day with this question. If you know the port that your ancestor came through, the center has microfilmed copies of the ships passenger lists and indexes. Look in your phone book for the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints Family History Library. Many ports are indexed, as Philadelphia for example, but not all in the time you are searching. Many of them came through the Port of New York and from about 1847 until about 1896 they are unindexed so you must search month by month starting with the spring and summer months. There is a time frame earlier around 1850 to 1870 ish that the records out of Bremen were burned. There are two lists however one out of Bremen and one into the Port itself. Every center usually will have a microfiche copy of the Morton Allen Directory of Ship arrivals, which lists by year, line, and name of ship and date of the arrivals, from about 1894 or so forward. The National Archives branches also have hard copies of this book. Anyway if you can check the census records for 1900 etc. for the date of arrival that may also help narrow your search. I have my Zapf family wappen that is found in J. Sibmacher's index of wappenbuchs. I would like to find a professional researcher in Bavaria who could do work for me in further researching my family wappen. I can provide quite a bit of information on where the wappen is recorded, etc. but want to find how, why and to whom it was given. Shirley Baxter
Hello everyone Wishing everyone a Happy Holidays. Searching for information on my GM Sabina Schmidt born March 17, 1843; Neustadt, Bavaria. I am researching my great-grandmother, Barbara Hornberger. She was born in Bavaria (I don't know the town) c. 1840. She married Martin Gutekunst b. c.1836 in Schietingen, Nagold. They emigrated to America in 1866 and settled in Lehigh Co. Pennsylvania. Do these names ring a bell with anyone? Joan Blank JoanHB@aol.com
Hello everyone! Might anyone know how I could find ship's lists of emigrant passengers from the port of Bremen post 1894? I am specifically interested in the vessel Kohn, but also others as well. The "Germans to America" set can't help because my HAGEN's and UTTENDORFER's came after the set ends. The Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild likewise does not have transcriptions for this vessel. Thank you for any assistance! Joanne Parmley
I just got started in genealogy and was doing fairly well until I got my first link back to Germany. I found a reference to the marriage of my gggrandfather/mother and have no idea what to do next. I have these two pieces of information. 1 Caspar Spitzner married Barbara Schumacher - 29 Dec 1831 Civil, Hohenollen, Pfalz, Bayern 2. Caspar Spitzner married Barbara Schumacher - 1 Jan 1832 Evangelisch, Einoellen, Pfalz, Bayern I assume one is a civil ceremony and the other was in a church. Several questions. First where did these marriages occur - is Hohenollen a town, Pfaz a county or district - Bayern was a country at that time I believe. Second - is there an url that I can use to search German/Bavarian sites? Third - how do I go about getting copies of these documents. I would appreciate being pointed to a site that will help find my way around Germany as I think I have other branches headed there also Thank you Everett Spitzner Retired Gentleman of Leisure PADI Certified Open Water Scuba Diver everettspitzner@mediaone.net 630 627 1273
