Hi, Arline: Here's what I did to get the application copy (before I had a computer!) I wrote to the U.S. Department of State, 2201 "C" Street, Washington, D .C . 20520 gave them all the pertinent info re when he arrived from Germany, when he applied for citizenship, etc. The DOS replied 26 days later and told me to write to: The Diplomatic Branch The National Archives and Records Administration Washington, D .C. 20408 27 days later, I received a copy of the document with his biog. info and birthplace. Now, there may be a quicker way to do this on the net, but I don't know how to request it from the Archives. Perhaps some kind-hearted person who does can help. Good Luck! Bernard
Geo. DORFNER born in Mitterfels, in early 1800's, his biography says Haugen-Laugericht. Are those place names? Seems to have been on parental farm, then became a traveling baker. Here in U.S. in time fo Civil war service in Illinois. DORFNER surname in Dingolfing back into 1200;s. Bev. (Wash state, USA)
Wilhelm: Thank you most kindly for your response about Oldenstein. However, the information on Karl's birthplace was taken from his application for a passport from the US Government so he could visit his homeland. I am not arguing with you about this, but I'm wondering if the map you mentioned might not have taken into account name-changes between 1880 and the present. The other possibility would be if the official who wrote "Oldstein" on the application did not hear the name correctly. Is there an "Altenstein" on the map you mention? Thank you once again for your help. Regards, Bernard
Do you have any information regarding the Coat of Arms over the gates of Saltzburg? In my research I have found that Hester Salusbury Thrale Piozzi may have shown a copy of the Salusbury Coat of Arms (from Wales) and pedigree to an official in Salzburg (in the late 1700- early 1800's), and this official verified that the Coat of Arms was the same and that the pedigree she showed the official was authentic. Where do I need to search for additional information the verify this fact? I have not found a reference book written by Mrs. Piozzi which contains this information, but it is believed that she wrote in her book, _Autobirgaphical Memoirs_, "The Salusbury pedigree is perpetually referred to by Pennant in his numerous volumes. I showed an abstract of it to the heralds in the office at Saltzburg and they acknowledged me a true descendant of their house." Do yo or anyone on the list have any information which might be helpful? Thanks, Dixiebelle, South Georgia, USA
The German phone directory shows 4 Rosenberg in Bavaria. And there are 6 or more Gschwendt listed in Bavaria, not mentioning the smaller ones, which are now part of a larger community. Dear Nancy, I am not sure that I can help but here it is.....In my SEWARD line I have a Thomas SEWARD who married a Hannah MARTIN or TUCKER on March 21, 1754. (records appear to contradict surname). Hannah died March 23, 1787 in Stoddard,(now Sullivan) N.H. I do not have her parentage and am still researching as this is a brick wall for me at this point. Perhaps she is one of yours. Hello: I would like some information on the following person, if at all possible. Any help you can give me would be very much appreciated! Karl Treiber - b. 30 August, 1865 in Oldenstein, Bavaria, sailed from Hamburg on the SS Herder on 28 April, 1881, alone, at 16 years of age, to New York City. Can you tell me where Oldenstein is in Bavaria, and to whom I might write for further information on his family roots, siblings, mother, father, etc. Thank You! Bernard Young
The ship "Main" 1882 Passenger List from Bremen to New York lists GGrandmother Justina KLAFFKI and son, Gottfreid KLAFFKI as coming from Bavaria--no town. All other documentation I have, just lists their former place of residence as Germany. Gottfreid KLAFFKI lists his father (on marriage certificate) as Gottfreid also. Since Justina (her maiden name was LANG) and son came alone, I am wondering how or where to look for information about the death of the father Gottfreid KLAFFKI who I assume died in Bavaria. Are there any vital records available or is this too broad an area to look?
Hello Robert, Would your Martin family interest include a Peter Martin born 5 October 1810? Nancy

Hi Lita: According to the German English Genealogical Dictionary Hoefer is a person from a place with suffix. So in your case it would be a person from Wohl. Larry Mastromatteo Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada
Thanks so much for all the information. I was told a "better" spelling which I'm ashamed I didn't think of myself with it's simplicity. I've very happy to be associated with such helpful people! Thanks! Lita If God seems far away... Guess who moved? See some of my accomplishments! http://pages.ivillage.com/misc/pux4/index.html
Dear Larry & Bavaria Rootsweb Group, Thanks for your information, Larry. Could the names Wohlforth, Wohlfort, Wohlford, Wolford be the same name as Wohlhoefer? If not, what is the meaning of Wohlforth, which is the name of my family from Bavaria? Thank you, Joanne
