This is my Laumeister page -- http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/b/u/t/Barbara-A-Butler/GENE2-0001.html I have found the parents of Stefan Laumeister -- they were Johann Nikolaus LAUMEISTER, born December 6, 1784 in Monchberg and married with Elisabeth GEIGERICH of Momlingen. Would love to have more information on Johann and Elisabeth... Think they may be the key to tying my Laumeisters together.... Not sure where John Anton LAUMEISTER fits in either -- would like to find his family and parents...... History of Santa Clara County - pg 1683 The late John A. Laumeister, a native of Frankfort, born 24 August, 1816, then in the State of Bavaria, who was also a well-educated and well-trained man of exceptional ability as a practical miller and millwright. When Germany broke out into Revolution, in 1848, he sympathized with and joined such revolutionists as Carl Schurz, and fled to America for refuge, sailing with his family to New York. He gained American citizenship at the earliest date, in 1852, and while in New York he helped to build the Croton Mills. The same year in which he became a full-fledged American, he migrated west to California for the purpose of erecting the old Pacific Mill; and later he built and managed the Laumeister Mills at Mission San Jose, Calif. He had become married in Philadelphia to Miss Fredericka Haussler, a native of Wurtemberg, Germany, married in 1849, who proved an excellent helpmate, congenial to a man of his clear mind, determined character and withal, kindly heart. Although reared under Catholic auspices in Bavaria yet he became a very active and well-known Freemason in California, and a landowner of some importance near the Mission San Jose, where Gustav Laumeister was born, and where he passed his youth. In latter life, he was largely engaged in buying grain. He died in 1893, in his seventy-fifth year, as the result of an old injury. His wife outlived him by several years, attaining the age of eighty-six. There were two daughters, sisters of our subject: Anna had become the wife of Professor P. M. Fisher, of Oakland, formerly Superintendent of Schools in Alameda County and now principal of the Oakland Polythechnic, and also formerly editor of the State Educational Journal, but she is now deceased; Christina W. is Mrs. Ambrose Megahan of Oakland. I search for information on the name STIEGLER. This family name apparently generated in the Bavarian area and gradually migrated west into Wuerttemberg. The last real connect I have is Georg Balthasar STIEGLER who resideded in Ilsfeld, Wuerttemberg. He was born about 1734, place ? His father was Johann Balthasar STIEGLER who resided in Kleinerlach, Wuerttemberg, born ?(probably around 1700), place? End of known connection. All beyond Georg Balthasar STIEGLER have been successfully identified. Since there was a tendency to name a child after the father, mother, grandfather or grandmother etc, I find some names on the internet. If anyone can help me connect these names, give information on the the name STIEGLER or direct me as to where to search, I would like to hear from you. Names found in search, but with unknown connection. 1.Georg STIEGLER, born 1564 in Morsbrunn, Mittelfranken, Bavaria 2.Wolfgang STIEGLER, born 1566 in Morsbrunn, Mittelfranken, Bavaria 3.Wolfgang STIEGLER, born 1595 in Morsbrunn, Mittelfranken, Bavaria 4.Georg STIEGLER, born 1636 in Dietershofen, Mittelfranken, Bavaria 5.Georg STIEGLER, born 1643 in Oberkrumbach, Mittelfranken, Bavaria 6. Georg STIEGLER, born 1671 ? Bavaria 7. Johann Balthaser STEIGLER born 1763 in Marktbergel, Mittelfranken, Bavaria 8.Wolfgrang STIEGLER, born 1695 in Algersdorf, Mittelfranken, Bavaria 9. Georg STIEGLER,born 1697 in Algersdorf, Mittelfranken, Bavaria 10. Georg STIEGLER, b 1732 in Dietershofen, Mittelfranken, Bavaria 11. Georg STIEGLER b 1748 in Kirchensittenbach, Mittelfranken, Bavaria These villages are all in the same area near Nuremberg. I suspect these people are all related and probably the ancestors of the people that migrated to Wuerttemberg, and eventually to Texas. Dear Listers, I saw a film recently at my local LDS family history library. It was a Geburten somethingorother, civil records, for 1836-1846. In it I was looking for the birth of my great grandmother, Nov. 16 1840. I did not find her. I do not know what Geburten means. Is it more likely that I would find her in a Catholic Church book? She was a Catholic and lived in a village near Saarbrucken. This area was sometimes French and sometimes German. Tom the Bewildered
Hello list, I should have explained my Shtetlseeker question better. I can see Oppau on the map. I was trying to measure the distance between Grossniedesheim and Oppau, but the Shtetlseeker, which will do that for every other town refuses to find Oppau, which I can see with my own two eyes. Oppau is visible, for example, when you request Frankenthal or Grossniedesheim. When you recenter an zoom in where Oppau is on the map, it disappears. I guess I was just suggesting that there may be a bug in the software, unless I was doing something wrong. Cheryl Hartley

Hello list, I am very new to the list. I am looking for any one in the Bavaria area by the name of Vick or a name that could be a forerunner of the name Vick. The first known Vick in the US is Joseph Vick b. about 1640. I am told that my ancestors may have come from Bavaria. Even information about ancestors of the famous Henri De Vic (Henry De Vick) of France the one who made the De Vick clock would be appreciated. Thanks, Jim Vick Verona, Italy
Hello, I am new to the list. I am searching for information on the following families. GOETTLING...I know Friedrich Goettling was born in 1853 in Bottenbach, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany. He is the son of Friedrich Goettling and Susanna Wagner. In Bavaria I am also looking for the surname Hangen. My grandfather told me that the family gained their surname because of their houses, they seemed to be hanging on the side of a Mountain. I am new to this list and am looking for assistance in clarifying an address. I have an envelope that was sent to my mother about 1984 from a cousin of her mother. The return address on the envelope is shown as "Abs. Brunnhildis ANGERMULLER, Schwesternheim 8317 Mengkofen bei Dingolfing, Bayern Deutschland, Europa" . I would appreciate assistance in establishing if my interpreation is correct as I think that she was in Mengkofen near Dingolfing. I believe that at the time the cousin, who was very elderly was a Sister in a Catholic Convent, and would almost have certainly died by now. I would also like to contact the convent to see what happened to her and also to see if they can provide me with any information regarding her family or next of kin as all contact with my grandmother's family, that remained in Germany, has been lost. To renew this contact if at all possible would greatly assist me in my family research. Thanks in advance for any assistance or information that may be forthcoming. Graham Burgemeister. Linda, I'm sure there's a list showing the German-Czech names of towns and villages on the Internet (just not sure how to access, perhaps a search). Many current (especially European mfg) maps still show both the Czech name of a town and, if it had one, the German name. As far as the word "Schlesisch" is concerned, this may refer to Silesia, formerly joined to the Czech Lands, now mostly with Poland & ?. I believe a bit still resides in CR. Thanks for reminder on Troppau. Barbara BIERMANN HARTLEY had posted a question in Bavaria list saying she was having trouble finding a town, even using the Shtetl Seeker. Her search was for "Oppau". I, too, tried to do a search on the town in various search engines to no avail. So the only conclusion to which I could arrive was that this was either transcribed from handwriting or the village no longer existed. As a possible German town, Oppau sounded odd. I guess this should remind us all that transcribing old documents requires diligence on all our parts. Thanks again for "Troppau." On Sat, 29 Jan 00 13:56:06 -0000 "Linda K. Hi, Would someone please share with me where I would write for records of Evagelisch, Herrenalb, Schwarzwaldkreis, Wuerttemberg. @ 1820-30's Was that area of Germany ever included in another country??? Dear Readers, Here's a site you'll want to write down for future reference (or book mark): AllanHobbs Writes:======================== ShtetlSeeker - Town Search for Europe (with distances) http://www.jewishgen.org/shtetlseeker/loctown.htm Map Quest is at http://www.mapquest.com Regards Allan Hobbs, Australia ====================================== What Allan doesn't say is that it's better than going straight to mapquest.com for small towns and villages. I tried to mapquest.com on two villages, "Rudzka" in CR, and "Weichering" in DE. Mapquest said not found. When I used the shtetl seeker I found both. It's database of villages is incredible. Remember to limit the country you want first before you tell it to submit the search, otherwise it'll check all countries in its database. It uses the soundex system for finding the village, whereas mapquest doesn't know beans about haceks and carkas. Also, once you get the map you may not see the village below the star because it is so small that it won't show until you zero (magnify) in once or twice. Do this by selecting "Recenter & Zoom" before you click right on top of the star icon. When you finally see the town name on the map, use the function on the lower right to enlarge the map (plus symbol +), then you can select to print it out. Questions? Sharing.
