Hi Listers, Anyone know descendants of Civil War Medal of Honor receipient Christian Albert from Ohio? Thanks, Jeff <><
Dear all, is someone member of ancestry.com and would do me the favour to get out 4 entries for me here in Germany. I am only interested in that four civil war records for the name ROSENHAUER and I think the membership from germany then is not very useful. Would be super nice! Hi, Would anyone have Christiane Friederike Pfizenmaier and be able to identify her ... marriage(s)? Thanks, Dave Dhwaldmann@aol.com
Certainly, MILLER is less common than MUELLER / MÜLLER. However, still in the 19th century, many MUELLER / MÜLLER were spelt MILLER in Bavaria. Not mentioning the many MUELLER / MÜLLER who changed their spelling into MILLER, when they arrived in America. But, even nowadays, there are about 20,000 MILLER living in Germany. I saw genealogies on the Family History board yesterday. Go to "custom search" on www.familysearch.org then choose the database search and places. I put in Bayern (or Bavaria) and got a long list of possibilities. There are a few categories that might help you. As I understand ii until about 1800 if our ancestors were serfs and most were they had to get permission from the owner of the land upon which they lived before they could relocate to the next farm or into the next county. They were property and they were part of the land upon which they lived. The few records that I have seen indicate that their lord required a hefty payment - usually translated Tax. I suspect that this tax took most of the cash the would be emigrant had managed to save, They were a tad above slaves - they could own farm animals and personal possessions, and they received a portion of the harvest. And they were under the protection of their lord. I am searching for the origins of the Nymon/Neiman family and the Mater family - I have them in Penn's Trust in the 1700's and they seem to have been German speaking. Also the Iles/Iler family, Henry Iles said he was born in England and later in the American colonies, he was a Hessian soldier POW. So I suppose some Iles may have escaped his servitude when he was conscripted and sent to England where he married an English wench and had a son, named Henry. That is the only way I can imagine a Hessian soldier in the American colonies saying he was born in England. Very willing to share family information - Hal
This site probably has more information than you bargained for! http://www2.genealogy.net/gene/www/emig/emigrati.html Another site with a list of books is: http://www.readthemovie.com/rootsbooks/immigration/index.html Check the books (or print the list) and go to a library with a good genealogical section. Most of these books are probably there. The German's to America series starts with 1850. Some of the other sources go back further. There is also http://istg.rootsweb.com where volunteers are transcribing ship lists and more appear daily. Unfortunately I have no > clue how to get this list. The Bremen bark BESSEL, commanded by Capt. H. Haesloop, made a single voyage to the United States in 1853, sailing from Bremen on 11 April, with 235 steerage passengers, and arriving at Baltimore on 7 June 1853. You will find a microfilm copy of the original passenger arrival list in U.S. National Archives Microfilm Publication M255, roll 9. You can borrow a copy of this microfilm through any LDS (Mormon) Family History Center (Family History Library microfilm #0417391). This passenger list has also been abstracted in Ira A. Glazier and P. William Filby, ed., _Germans to America; Lists of Passengers Arriving at U.S. Ports_, vol. 5 (Wilmington, Delaware: Scholarly Resources, 1989), pp. 64-66; the names also appear in the CD-ROM edition of _Germans to America_, 1850-1874, Family Tree Maker's Family Archives CD-ROM #355. For a list of libraries in Germany with holdings of _Germans to America_, see http://www2.genealogy.net/gene/www/emig/gta-holdings.html Also, if you give me the name and year of birth of the person (or, if you are researching a family, of each member of the family) you are researching, I shall be happy to check the copy of _Germans to America_ in my local library.
