    2. Ceal Wutka
    3. The date will be very useful, since this gives you confirmation when you find more information. Have you done a search of the IGI on the Family History site? This will give you lots of information if you find your ancester there. Did she live long enough to be found on the 1900 census? If so, you will know her year of immigration and you might be able to find a ship list (although this will seldom give a detailed city of origin, but would give you an exact date of arrival) and maybe a Declaration of Intention and Naturalization papers. These often give a more detailed city, depending on the state. Have you checked out the cemetery information? Sometimes good information was saved in their files. Funeral homes may still have an index card as well and the funeral home is listed on your death certificate. I have not been able to find most of this information for several of my ancesters. I keep trying! I have Herman Schmitz and Adelaide Schomaker from Hanover. 3. Hi! this is my first posting and I have a question regarding a birthdate. I have just gotten a copy of my great great great grandmothers death certificate and I was lucky enough that it told her birthdate. The place of birth listed was Bavaria. The information I got was Elizabeth Willrich born 21 February 1820 in Bavaria. Does anyone know where I would be able to discover further information about where she was from in Bavaria? Does having the date of birth facilitate that search at all? thanks for any advice on how to further approach this search...

    2. Lisa, Heidelberg (burg?), of course! Rick Garza ============Lisa Writes Hello all, I was wondering if someone out there could give me a little help. I was in Germany about 6 years ago. While I was there we went to a place that was sort of castle-like and it had the world's largest wine barrel in it. I believe this place was close to Heidelberg. I remember having to go up a hill to get to this place. I can not remember the name of this place or the exact location. Does this sound familiar to anyone? thanks, Lisa ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Juno now offers FREE Internet Access! 3. Moira, With my rusty German I would translate Das Land des Lachelns (literally) as The Land of Laughs. There is an operetta (by Franz Lehar, I think) called The Land of Smiles, so this fits in with the context you mention. Hope this is of use. 1. [BAVARIA] HELP NEEDED - BAMBERG RECORDS
    2. Joan Marie Meyering
    3. Could anyone tell me if there would have been a hospital in Bamberg, around 1900? I am trying to get a birth certificate for someone born 2 February 1901 in Bamberg, or alternately a death certificate for 11 August 1982 in Burgebrach, Rauhenbrach. (Hope I have those names right.) Our ultimate goal is to find the parent's names. Where could we write for such information? If there was one, would the hospital be likely to have the birth information? What government entity would the information be at? Is this something that could be done better in person and would anyone be willing to work with me on it? I would be willing to pay a reasonable fee. Thank you for helping. joantoni@open.org

    1. Laube - 9th Century.
    2. Arthur H Laube
    3. Paul Laube, born about 1750 at Bauschewitz, was a Judge. This was village beside Fort Leismertz in the Kingdom of Bohemia. His probably eldest son, Joseph Nickolaus, born December 6, 1780, was a brewmaster and a trumpeter in t he Austrian Cavalry. He lived in Gayness on the Turkish border. And relocated to Oesnitz, Saxony and to Zwickav in 1821. One of Josef's sons, Francis Laube was born February 1819 in Oesnitz, Saxony. He arrived in the United States, August 10, 1837 and traveled widely before settling in Pittsburgh. He married Fredericka Hoffman and they were the progenitors of a tribe that are still be found in the Pittsburgh area and throughout this country. We have not been able to connect this Bohemian tribe of Laubes with my line which lived from 1600 in the village of Baldingen, Kanton Aargau, Switzerland. Except for a strange document found amongst Francis Laube's papers which refers to a Wappen which says the Swiss Laube family were an old family well known in the Ninth Century. We have no idea why this carefully copied Wappen ( no doubt copied before the ubiquitous electrostatic copying machine was invented) which refers to a Swiss family of Laubes should have been in the papers of a Laube descended from a family of the Kingdom of Bohemia. From records in Switzerland it seems very likely that possibly all of the Laubes of early Switzerland, before 1800, originated from this Baldingen tribe. Many scholars have snickered at the above account, but it wears well and with improving communications I may yet find someone who would like to discuss this family or the Wappen or both. I am indebted to contemporary descendants of this Bohemian line who kindly gave me more than 100 pages of interesting information about this family. Frankly I am not interested in hearing from those who will attempt to say that such references to a surname like Laube in the Ninth Century must be spurious - I already have a file of those - is there anyone who would like to pursue the matter further? That is, a possible connection between Paul Laube of Bauschewitz and the line of Laube's descended from Hans Jogli Laube of Baldingen, born 1630 and his wife, Barbara Schweri. (I do not believe we are closely related to Laubi or Laubly, although they apparently originated not far from Baldingen and there may be a connection in Switzerland before 1600 that we do not know about.) I am sending a copy of this to my grandson, Paul Laube, who seems to be the last male of the Swiss line defined above who is of an age that he is likely to continue the line. We do have several daughters and a granddaughter who have kept the name Laube for professional reasons, and I will copy them as well. As Francis Laube said, in 1888, "If you are a Laube do not mutilate the name. I gave it a good sound wherever I went and if you do that, you will be respected by the good and the honest." He went on to say that many German families, First Families in Pittsburgh, were taking an English pronunciation. He said, "Don't imitate that, don't do that." Regards Hal

    1. Mater/Mader
    2. Arthur H Laube
    3. The Mater/Mader family may have lived near Zwickow, I am not sure of the spelling but I think it also is in Sachsen (Saxony). We have them in Cumberland County, Penn's Trust, before 1800. After 1850, in Ohio, Samuel and Emmanuel Mater changed their name to Mateer. Emmanuel seems to have died or moved on west. Sammuel and his family lived in Columbus, Ohio until he died Janurary 16, 1918. Would like to share information - Hal
