    1. [BAVARIA] SPOHRER and MEYERS
    2. Cindy Mann-Kanny
    3. Hi List Members! I am new to the list and to genealogy in general. Two of my family lines are from Bavaria: SPOHRER and MEYERS. Immigration information I obtained recently from "Germans to America" lists these ancestors as: Anton Spohrer, 26, M, Farmer, Bavaria, "000" for village "unknown" Catharina (MEYERS) Spohrer, 27, F, Farmer, Bavaria, village "unknown" Dorothea Spohrer, 29, F, Farmer, Bavaria, village "unknown". (Anton's sister?) All three departed from Havre on board the ship "Empire" and arrived in port of New York, November 19, 1853. (They settled in Pittsburgh, Pa.) I would appreciate any and all suggestions on how to locate the name(s) of the villages. Also, I noticed that a high percentage of the passengers (list runs @5 pages) on board this ship were farmers --- does anyone know what led to all of these farmers leaving Germany (or is this a fairly common distribution of ship passengers)? All suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Cindy Kanny

    3. I had a look in my dictionary and found the following old length measures: Fuß : 28-32 cm (differs from region to region) Hand: 25.4 cm (very old) Spanne: 22-28 cm (differs from region to region again) They were all used to describe the height of a person, so your relative was either very tall, 196 cm / 6 ft 2 inches or very small 149.26cm / ca 5 ft or 148 cm / 4ft 9 inches Does that help ? ----- Original Message ----- From: Sarah Williams <cat6_11@pe.net> To: <BAVARIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 29, 2000 12:57 AM Subject: [BAVARIA] Puzzling word > Fuss (Fuß) is the word for foot used now. The word is 'F"usse[n]' = foot[feet]. The Bavarian foot of the 1840's comprised 10 Zoll, each Zoll consisting of 12 Linien. The Bavarian foot was equivalent to 0.291859 meters. Your ancestor was therefore 1.7 meters, or 5 feet 7 inches tall. Michael Palmer --- Michael Palmer Claremont, California mpalmer@netcom.com

    1. [BAVARIA] Help Understanding Places
    2. I am searching for church records for the village of Erlenbach. A place search at www.familysearch.org returns the following two results: Germany, Bayern, Erlenbach, (BA Germersheim) and Germany, Bayern, Erlenbach, (BA Kaiserlautem) Can anyone tell me the meaning of the terms inside the parentheses? Do Germersheim and Kaiserlautem identify different geographical jurisdictions, each of which include a village named Erlenbach? Or do they mean something else? Thanks very much for any comments on this subject. Dick
