To aid in locating a town of origin: You might want to try looking at obituaries, (American) Church death records where they attended at the time of their death, and / or county death records. Also check the county health dept. for a death record or death certificate. Check these records for your ancestor and any others of the same or similar surname in that area. If it is a somewhat "uncommon" surname, you might wish to keep an eye out for info on other immigrants (even to other areas) of the same / similar surname. Then, check the online German telephone directories. These will most likely provide clues that you can follow up on. Hi, I am new to the list and I have just found out that my ggggrandfather came from Breunigweiler, Bavaria(Bayern?). I am searching for any information about him. His name was George RAUTH born June 5, 1764. He married Katharina WERST in 1789. He died in Germany on September 13, 1843. Katharina was born (in the same area) on April 17, 1772 and died September 23, 1855. They had 3 children (that we know of) Peter, Joseph and John who all went to the U.S. and settled in Defiance, Ohio sometime around 1855. This is my very first venture into German genealogy so any and all information about this family or any advice as to where to go for research would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Diana

Michael Sargl's birthplace is Hemau, Bavaria. Family history reports that his wife, Augusta Käflein, was also born in a nearby village and they met in the US where they married, however, all official documents pertaining to her Käflein family state that they were born in Baden. Another family source states her birthplace as Cariarhua-Baden. Does anyone know if there is such a place? Maybe it was a misinterpretation of Karslruhe-Baden. Is Baden adjacent to Bavaria? Thank you for any help, Nancy Rose
