Thomas, Are you living in Pilzen or just descended from there? They make excellent beer. No sign of a town with that spelling (Sübke/Sülbke) in Bavaria. You can look for yourself at http://bavariangenealogy.com/bh/ortes.htm. Could Sübke/Sülbke be SOLPKE, located 30 miles NW of Magdeburg, Germany? No luck on finding a town with spelling Sübke/Sülbke *anywhere else* in all of EUROPE. What is your source for this spelling? The town of KOHLAU (KOLOVA) in Czech is 5 miles SE of Karlovy Vary and about 40 miles NW of Pilzen. That's about 70 miles west of Prague. Hello List Members: I'm hot on the trail of the DANHOF/DANNHOFF/DANHOFF family trail. We have found the birthplace of this family unit at a city/village of Sübke or Sülbke in Bavaria. Could someone tell me where this village is located? So far, we have not been able to locate this village, after many months of research. The other village associated with this family in Kahlau in Bohemia and would like to know where this village may be located. I suspect it was either located NW of Prague or it could have been SW of Pilsen. This family unit was strongly associated with the manufacturing business. Danke und Mit Freundlichen Grussen, Thomas H. Semelbauer (Semmelbauer) >Bavaria>Bohemia > Pilsen District
Thank you, Paul, for your informative response. The family was Catholic so I will definitely contact the Diocesan Archive. Kind regards, Juliet Moritz
In a message dated 12/18/2002 7:38:49 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: > My understanding is that the records for LDS Schweinfurt only begin in the > 1880s, well after Anna Maria emigrated. > Hello Juliet: If you do not receive a better response from someone on the list, you might try the following. If you want to research the Church records for Schweinfurt, they have probably been moved to the archives and are no longer in the local churches. If your family was Catholic, the Schweinfurt records (for two Churches) are in the Diocesan Archive in Wuerzburg. The e-mail address is: [email protected] If the family was Lutheran, the archive e-mail is: [email protected] The archives will do the research for you, but for a fee You can write in English, but the reply might be in German, which, if you post to the mailing list, someone can translate for you. It's probably not necessary to include any detailed family info in your e-mail, because the archives will advise you first of the procedures and fees before conducting any research. If for some reason the records are located somewhere else, ask the archives for contact information. Good luck with your search. Paul C. Miller
Hope someone can shed some light on this mystery, my g.g.grandfather Adam Sala was listed in the 1870 Girardville,Pa census living with his son Adam & wife & daug, Margareth Becker & her children. 1880 census shows him to be living in Tamaqua,Pa with what appears to be the same daughter, except the name read Elizabeth, he is listed and all infor fits him to a "T". Is it possible that the daughter is Elizabeth Margareth Becker. Any idea as to how to find out and prove this. Would like to find where he is buried. ------------------------------------ Cooper: William died 1876 , is he buried in one of the local cemeteries in Ashland. His wife died in 1914 and is buried in Pt Carbon where she lived with her son, my g,uncle. --------------------------------- Thanks to all for inf MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL & A HAPPY,HEALTHY NEW YEAR. Hello, I am looking for any information on the LANG family of Schweinfurt, Bavaria. Specifically I am interested in: Anna Maria LANG born 07 July 1841 - she emigrated to the US appox. 1865 and married Johannes Sixtus Moritz in Philadelphia in 1871. Josephine LANG (DOB: unknown) - she was Anna Maria's sister. She married a man named RATH. They had a daughter, Barbara Rath, who emigrated to the US in the early 1900s to serve as governess to Anna Maria's grandchildren, John and Joseph Moritz. Catherine LANG (dob: approx. 1829) - also Anna Maria's sister. My understanding is that the records for LDS Schweinfurt only begin in the 1880s, well after Anna Maria emigrated. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have just had surgery and will be housebound for some time, unable to get to the LDS center. Kind regards, Juliet Moritz

I am new to the list. I am researching the following families: Jacob BETZ born abt. 1812 in Bavaria (don't know exactly where). Don't know when he came to US, but he shows up in Chicago, Illinois about 1856 until about 1875. He may have lived in New York prior to this. Jacob is my brick wall. Anna Maria GRUS born 12/29/1835 in Weisenfeld, Bavaria came to America as a child with her parents George J GRUS and Anna (nee HOFFMAN). She also shows up in Chicago, Illinois married to Jacob Betz abt 1859. I don't know when she came to America or where she lived prior to being in Chicago. Jacob & Anna had 8 children while living in Chicago from 1859 until 1875. Where is Weisenfeld? I have very little knowledge of the location of Germany's cities. Margaret J from Wisconsin
Thomas, There has some research been done relating to the Hafenbrädl family of Eisenstein - one of the famous families in the glass business in both the Bavarian and the Bohemien forest. Would you be interested to get in touch with them? Hallo, I want to report briefly, why I after Schratt vigorous. Tim Stieg, from Ohio, said to me somewhat about a castle in Oberammergau. I did not know this castle, although I grew up only 50 kilometers far away from it. Then I went to the archivist into Oberammergau and asked this. He said to me then of the designer of the castle. It was Leonhard B. Schratt. Schratt L went to 1902/1903 to the USA. The archivist of Oberammergau wanted to know more from the Schratt family in the USA. I said to him, I wanted to help. I learned the owner of the Ammerburg castle in Oberammergau now to know also. It is the Countess of Ingeheim Molitor, which lives now in Munich. She said to me, that there father the castle bought. She gave me a book, in which the Ammer castle was described briefly. The book is of Andreas Ley and has the title "the mansion as castle". The book is appeared 1981 in the publishing house D W. Callwey in Munich. ISBN 3-7667-0567-9. It is written in German. In this book I read also from Katharina Schratt, which had a dwelling in Triest. The Ammer castle in Oberammergau has the same appearance as the Schloss Miramare briefly before Triest. Schratt Leonhard has probably this Schloss on one of its journeys after Triest to its sister seen and this Schloss in Oberammergau, somewhat smaller, copied. I found many Schratt in the environment of Oberammergau. I look for all Schratt, which want to still live more of Schratt in the USA and say to me. Perhaps you can say to me more. I look forward already to your answer. Regards Klaus Labow from Munich [email protected]
It appears to me from having ancestors in NE as well as in the South, that reuse of a name was more common in the North. The thrifty Yankees never threw away anything, including a name. They were more likely to reuse a name than were the Southerners. And they did it in my family, too. Greetings All: I am attempting to build a database for my German (PLANNERER) ancestors and possible relatives. I have come across several names of places I want to use in the database, but do not understand in what categories they belong. Most of these are listed with records from the 1700-1800's. I guess one of the things that is confusing me is that I am used to a city being named first, then a state, and then the country. I get confused when the names are: 1. more than the typical 3 2. when one time the name is second, then next time it is last, and the later it might be in the 3rd position. 3. One time it is part of a 3 part name, then the next time they are separate names For example: Jenapriessnitz, Sachsen-Weimer-Eisenach, Thuringen Is Jenapriessnitz a city? Is Sachsen-Weimer-Eisenach a region or 3 regions ( or some other kind of district )? I believe that Thuringen was a country/kingdom at that time (but was later a state?) The next record splits the name and switches the wording around. Dornburg, Eisenach, Weimar, Sachsen Sometimes Sachsen is first or second , like a town or region; the next time it is last, like a state or Kingdom. I hope someone can clarify the confusion. Hollenbach, Jagstkreis, Wuerttemberg Was Hollenbach a city, Jagstkreis a region and Wuerttemberg a state/Kingdom at that time? What about Neutz, Saalkreis, Sachsen, Preussen? What about Friedingen, Donaukreis, Wuerttemberg? I would appreciate any help you can give. Mike Kennedy Dayton Ohio
