Hello, I am new to this mailing list and new to German research. My 4xgreat grandfather, Sebastian SEEMANN and his wife Regina (nee KEMMER) immigrated to Australia in late 1862. Sebastian was born to Michael SEEMANN and Otilia KEMPLE in approximately 1837, and married Regina in 1862, prior to immigrating. So far I have searched death/birth/marriage certificates from Australia, the Queensland Card Shipping Index (I could not find them here) and naturalization certificates. The most information I have uncovered is that he came from Bavaria (on the naturalization certificate) but unfortunately no townships have been discovered. Does anyone have any ideas where I can move from here? I have access to an LDS Family History Center, but am not sure which records I could look at without having a town. What about shipping records from Germany - is there a particular port which most people from Bavaria would have used in 1862? Regards Werona

Check out Shellenbergs in Colorado. Then and now. Stormy
I am researching Ludwig Peter Heintz, who migrated from Zwiebrucken to New York, then to Louisiana in the mid 1800's. He was married to Marie Fredriecka Schellenberg. Family stories have him as either nobility or an aristocrat before the 1848 German revolution. Supposedly he had to be smuggled out the country in a pickle barrel, I am not sure how much truth there is in this story, I have not been able to confirm. Ludwig had several children in New Orleans, LA. 1. Carl Heinrich Heintz, born 1853 2. Frederick Julius Heintz, born 1855 3. Emma Emilie Johanna Heintz, born 1859 4. Louise Christine Francisca Heintz, born 1861 5. Caroline Magthalena Heintz, born 1864 6. Barbara Emilie Marie Heintz, born 1866 7. Ludwig Ferdinand Heintz, born 1868 8. Edward Julius Heintz, born 1870 9. Clara Charlotte Georgianna Heintz, born 1873 10. Catherine Henriette Heintz, born 1875 11. Florence Julietta Heintz, born 1878 Anyone wanting to share info please contact me at [email protected] or [email protected] Judy
Hi, Apologies to all for this message clogging your mailboxes, I've tried to search for Jim in various ways via the Internet with no luck. It seems he no longer has the email address below and I have no update to change the old one in the Bavarian Surnames Index for him. To Jim Wilson, former email address of << [email protected] >> or anyone who knows of him, if you see this message, Linda at << [email protected] >> is trying to contact you in regard to your HEFFNER surname interest from Thalfang. Jim's other surname interests: FENSTERMACHER (Hillscheidt, Brobach, Thranen) HOHMANN (Oldbrucken) RUPPENTHAL (Achtelsbach) ULRICH (Griese) ZORN (Griese) Unfortunately, I'll have to remove the names from the Index if I'm not able to find a valid email address for Jim this way. Thanks, and sorry again! Joanne
Hi, http://www.rootsweb.com/~deubay/beginner.html Included on the page are links for: Michael Rauck's beginner page, "How to Find Ancestor Records in Bavaria", Wilhelm Kemendics' "GATEWAY to Bavarian Genealogy Research" and "All the Places in Bavaria (as of 1964, but not including Rheinpfalz)" pages, my Bavarian Surnames Index and Bavaria FAQ's websites, "Genealogical Research in Bavaria" by Friedrich R. Wollmershäuser, A translation of a reprint from the "Mitteilungen fur die Archivpfege in Bayern." (Report on the Archives in Bavaria), and direct links to the LDS texts "Determining Place of Origin in Germany", "A Handbook of German Research", and their "Germany Research Outline". Also a links to a map of Germany showing Bavaria and a map showing Bavaria when it owned Rheinpfalz. This information should get anyone just starting well on their way. Additionally, http://www.rootsweb.com/~deubay/town_locators.html Should also be quite helpful. Happy hunting, Joanne

Hi, I have been seeing a lot of new surnames being posted to the lists lately and I am wondering, have those of you doing the posting also submitted your surnames to the Bavarian Surnames Index? http://bavariansurnames.homestead.com/index.html The website has many visitors who are not subscribed to the lists and thus people who would not have seen your surnames mentioned. Also, if anyone needs to update an old email address, please also consider taking the time to do so at the Index. Your previous submissions become virtually worthless if they don't have a valid email address to accompany them. Thanks, Joanne
Hi, If you look at the title at the top of the page, it says "Chronical [sic] of Hefersweiler - Berzweiler - english version". I'm not sure how many subscribers are aware that a "Chronicle" (Chronik) might be available for their own ancestral villages or towns, too. Some are shorter, some just as detailed. You never know until you check to see what is available. Here is another example of one, this one in German that I had translated for my own family tree: http://www.kulturblosn.de/chronik_auszuge.htm This information can often be found by visiting a town's website. If it is not mentioned there, an email to the Rathaus (city hall) personnel would probably tell you if one exists for that location or not. Another place where you can look up historical texts is here: Quellen und Hilfsmittel zur ortsbezogenen Familienforschung in Bayern http://www.familie-habersack.de/obffb/obffb_o.htm Also, Bayern ensteht also lists some historical information along with coats of arms: http://www.bayern.de/HDBG/gemeind/index.htm Additionally, you can also check here: Karlsruhe Virtual Catalog http://www.ubka.uni-karlsruhe.de/hylib/en/kvk.html Joanne In a message dated 02/23/2003 7:46:22 AM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: > > For those of you who asked for a reposting of the site, it is > http://www.hefersweiler-berzweiler.de/html/english/english.html and you > can navigate around the site at http://www.hefersweiler-berzweiler.de/ > > The address can also be found in the archives of the list. I am looking for information on relatives of mine who lived in or near Munich before and during World War II. The information I have is: My great-grandfather, Albert Friedrich Kurth was born in Berlin-Spandau in 1861 and came to the USA in the 1880's. Albert had a brother, Wilhelm Kurth (1865-1933). Wilhelm had a daughter, Luci (1892-1958) who married Wilhelm Schneidt. I don't have any further information on Wilhelm Schneidt except a reference in some old family letters that say he was an "Upper Federal Employee" in Munich. Wilhelm and Luci Schneidt had the following children: 1. Liesl Schneidt. Liesl married Hans Kohorn and they immigrated to the USA probably in the 1930's. 2. Fritz Schneidt. Served in the German military during World War II and died a prisoner in Russia. Unfortunately, I don't have birth or death dates for him or know what unit he may have served in, so I do not have any further information on him. 3. Friedl, married Wilhelm Russwurm. Does anyone have information on these people? I have some information on the Kurth family from Berlin going back a few generations, but am interested in finding more information on this branch of the family as well. Thanks Paul
For those of you who asked for a reposting of the site, it is http://www.hefersweiler-berzweiler.de/html/english/english.html and you can navigate around the site at http://www.hefersweiler-berzweiler.de/ The address can also be found in the archives of the list. I have been having trouble with sending mail so if there is anyone who wrote me off list and did not get an answer please send me another request.
Hi, As long as I've been mentioning my (VERY) unfinished Bavaria Gen Web website < g>, I might as well put out the call for volunteer translators and / or people who have specific resources that they might be willing to do look-ups for others in. So far all I have for the individual volunteer translators are Karin Bachhuber and Ilse Flick. The more who volunteer, the less of a burden on everyone overall. :-) Volunteers are welcome to request notes to be added with their entries such as: "short texts only" "also able to transcribe documents written in Old German Script" "only available to translate during the months of January through April" etc., etc. Here is the page where your name and contact info would appear under "Volunteer Translators": http://www.rootsweb.com/~deubay/correspondence.html (also on a mirror site: <<http://www.bavariagen.com/correspondence.html>>) For Look-ups: If you have a written town history, an Ortsippenbuch, etc. that you would be willing to do look-ups in for others with the same place interest, that would be appreciated. I'm also especially looking for people who have "Germans to America" CD's and would be willing to do "blind searches" in those. I did include a note at the top of the section for people NOT to ask for blind searches in location-specific resources! Your name and contact information would appear here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~deubay/lookups.html (also at the mirror site: <<http://www.bavariagen.com/lookups.html>> You might wish to check the table on the page to see the resource note information others have already given for their own resources. Thank you! Joanne
