I'm looking for the Bavarian origins of my great grandparents, Johann (John) Baptist Hafner (Haefner) and Anna Maria Marschhauser, both born 1844 somewhere in Bavaria. Steve
The LDS site is a must. That is how I found mine German ancestors. If you have not tried it, go to familysearch.org and click on the IGI and search for the surname. Hopefully, that will help you. Let me know if you need help. Steve what is the name of the grandfather you are looking for? I will run it in some of my programs. Alena
Hi Steve, Sounds like you checked the Passenger Lists for your people but what about the Marriage Record, U.S. Census Records, Natualization Papers, Land Records, or anything else that may have generated paper work while he was living in the U.S.? One of those might list the exact town that you are looking for. Godd luck-- Cris ---- Original Message ---- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [BAVARIA] Questions for list members Date: Wed, 09 Apr 2003 20:16:26 +0200 >Greetings! > >My maternal Great Great Great Grandfather emigrated from Bavaria to >the US >in November 1836. Greetings! My maternal Great Great Great Grandfather emigrated from Bavaria to the US in November 1836. He and his family (wife and three children) sailed from the port of Le Havre to New Orleans. The shipping register listed him as a farmer by occupation and coming from Bavaria. I am trying to find the name of the town or village where they came from in Bavaria and would like to ask the following questions of the list membership: 1. Would they have required a passport or laissez-passez at that time and, if so, where would they have obtained it? And what archives would keep an archives of applications for such documents? 2. What route might they have followed from Bavaria? Down the Rhine to Bremen or Hamburg and from their by ship to Le Havre? 3. What resources or archives might have a comprehensive list of emigrants from that period? Please reply to me off line at [email protected] With my thanks in advance! Stephen Lubell

All the lists I subscribe to are very, very quiet. It's been that way since the war in Iraq started. I think some of us may have some very important things on our minds other than genealogy. My answer above should not give any of you a reason to comment on the war, positive or negative, Let's keep politics out of the list. Thanks. Greetings: I am researching the Plannerer family of Lenau and Kulmain in NE Bavaria. I am also trying to find an email address for a Johannes Planerer of Altenburg, Thuringen, or someone who knows this gentleman and can pass on some messages between us. Does anyone know of another list that might be more appropriate for Altenburg, Thuringen? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Mike Kennedy Dayton Ohio

Hello to Bavarians, Franconians and Hessians- Certain entries in the Parish Register of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newark NJ present me with the problem of which list to post a message to. There are immigrants named SCHUBERT, SELIG, GLASSEN, TRÜB, DESCH and SACHS who, according to the records, come from "Oberndorf, Bavaria" or "Oberndorf, Neo-Bavaria". I think by searching the German phone book for accumulations of theses names I've finally hit upon the correct Oberndorf - nowadays located just across the border in Hessen in the community of 63637 Jossgrund in the Spessart region. Back in the 1840's/50's when these families emigrated, Oberndorf was in fact part of Bavaria, having been granted to Bavaria in 1815 by the Treaty of Vienna. There it remained until 1866, when another treaty ceded it to Prussia (and thus to Hessen). These political developments are the reason I'm posting my questions to Bavarian, Franconian and Hessian lists: Does anyone have information on emigration in general from Oberndorf (or Burgjoss) to the US? Does anyone have access to the Kirchenbuch (Parish Register) of Oberndorf? Does anyone have information on the surnames listed above from Oberndorf (or Burgjoss)? I have access to the microfilms of the Parish Register for St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newark NJ. Should you like a lookup for any of the above surnames, please provide as many specific details as possible. Thanks very much George Meister
Hi, Looking for correct location.Ellis Island ship manifest lists place of residence 1910 of Jacob(Jean Jacque)Meyer and Augustine and children as Rotemen. Their daughter said it was near Muhlhausen. I haven't been able to find the correct place using mapquest or expedia. Shtetl Seeker gave several similar spellings but they seemed to be in wrong place.Supposedly they came from Alsace. Any help appreciated. Claire Carr, Howell, NJ, USA
