Thanks you for the tip. I have their marriage record in America but no birthplace is listed. As well no parental information is listed either. It's very disappointing. Hi, I am new to this mailing list, and have in fact never subscribed to a mailing list, so I hope I am following the rules. Here goes: I am searching for history on my Dotzler family. This is the information that I know. Johan (John, Joannis,) and Appollonia Dotzler (her maiden name is Dotzler as well) immigrated to America, and landed in New York on May 27, 1846 aboard the Washington. According to his naturalization papers he was from Bavaria. Her obituary states her birthplace as Beiern which I am told could be Baiern (or Bavaria). I am aware that there is a Beiern in Thuringia but feel they were probably from the same area. They at first settled in Milwaukee and finally ended up near Bonair Iowa. Johan died Aug 28, 1888 and Appollonia died July 6, 1903. I have been unable to find what town they were from. I am currently waiting for copies of their death records in the hopes that it will states the exact location in Bavaria. I know that they were Catholic. I was hoping that someone out there is a Dotzler with information to help me, or that someone might know of a concentration of Dotzler's in Bavaria. If anyone else out there is searching for Dotzler's I will gladly share the information that I have. Thanks for any help. Dana Stokes [email protected]
I too have the names of Muller and Schneider in my family tree.

Hello Stephen, For some ideas on locating your German ancestor's hometown in Germany see... Basic Research Outline for German Genealogy http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/outline.html Scroll down to where it says, "Find your Immigrant Ancestor." For information on German emigration lists see... Online German Emigration Databases & Indexes http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/emigration.html You will also find a guide on that page (near the bottom) for locating German emigration lists offline at the Family History Library. Good luck with your search. Regards, Joe stephen lubell <[email protected]> wrote: > Greetings! > My maternal Great Great Great Grandfather emigrated from Bavaria to the > US in November 1836. Hi listmembers, I have tried to figure this question out on my own and cannot seem to come up with an answer. If this is the wrong 'forum' please disregard my question. I have a couple, George and Bertha GUTHMANN, born 1829 and 1835; he born in Bavaria, she in Wurttenberg. From different census records, they came to the US between 1872-1875. Their four children are as follows: George; born 1861; FRANCE Freiderich, born 1863; FRANCE Martin, born 1867; FRANCE Bertha, born 1868; FRANCE Here is my problem: Was Bavaria part of modern day Baden-Wurttenberg? And at the time of the children's birth, did the borders change so that if they lived in Wurttenberg, maybe it belonged to France? And does 'Guthmann' sound Jewish? I know that I have Schaff ancestors around the same time frame, who lived in Leiderscheidt, A-L; their child, Henry, was born in 1862 in Paris, they then came to the US in 1872.....? Thank you for any help, Kelly Michaels Schaff
