GREAT-GREAT-GRANDFATHER STRAUB--He was from Germany and at the village well getting water. A group of soldiers on horseback came to the well and asked him something in a foreign language. He did not understand what they wanted and offered them his pitcher for a drink of water. In anger, one or more soldiers ran their sabers through him and he died. His sons swore revenge and some or all became professional soldiers. It was possibly Prussian Soldiers who killed gggf Straub according to family lore. One son, retired soldier JOHN BAPTIST STRAUB, born June 24, 1817, place unknown, died 1876 or 1877, married KUNIGUNDA STAAB probably between 1858 and 1860. She was born about 1836, place unknown, and died 1895 in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Gggf Straub had 11 sons and one daughter, who worked for a prominent attorney in Frankfurt. This was the one who paid for her nephew, JOHN BAPTIST STRAUB, JR. to go to school to become a priest. She died suddenly in her yard. John then left the seminary, a Capuchin monastery, and came to the USA. When John Straub came to the USA in 1881 he had a document in German that read: RELEASE DOCUMENT---The Kingdom from Bavarian government from Unterfranken and Aschaffenburg tells you that the single baker is (learning) apprentice to baker. JOHN BAPTIST STRAUB from Hessenthal born March 15, 1863 from here. County government from city of Aschaffenburg. I am trying to find info on any of the above, or any of the family of the other brothers and sister. When Kunigunda Staab Straub and her daughter Rosina came to the USA in 1887 they first went to New York City because they believed they had "rich" relatives there. They did not find them. Thank you, Rosemarie [email protected]
Does anyone know of the Kuhn surname/family who used to reside in Neustadt am Main? Louis Kuhn immigrated to America and settled in Brooklyn NY with his brother, John. Their father was Anton Kuhn. He was a Game Warden for the Duke of Lowenstein in 1820. Anton's father may have been Georg Anton Kuhn who was also a Game Warden for the Abbey in Neustadt in 1795. Previous to Georg Anton, there is a Johann Joseph Kuhn who might have been Georg's father. Johann was also a Game Warden for the Abbey in 1760. If anyone knows about these Kuhns or the Duke of Lowenstein, I would appreciate hearing from you. I would also like any information concerning where I would find out the churches in Neustadt and where their records may be kept. Thank you for any help. Kathy [email protected]

Hi there, I am looking for any info or contact with any HERBERTH family in the Bavaria area of Germany. Sincerely, Carol H. Dye [email protected]
Being an old fogey here who's been working to understand Bavaria and German while sitting at a computer in Arizona, USA, I just came upon a website which would have helped me SO much at the beginning, and even after all these years, help quickly put so much in perspective for me. This morning, searching for a map just showing Mittlefranken and it's Kreis', I came upon wikipedia.org, landing first here: http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mittelfranken This website has an abundance of information which help one quickly understand (and locate!) the many land divisions, kreis, etc, etc, within Bavaria. I haven't had time to cruise that whole website, but as it's a free encyclopedia website, there may be an incredible amount of help here. I have nothing there to promote - just thought it might help a lot of researchers like me! Ron Klotz-Zellhoefer Wisconsin>Arizona [email protected] http://zelltree.com

This was sent in error. My apologies to the list. I picked the wrong address from my address book I know better than to send jokes, virus alerts, and other off topic items to the list. what is this?
- Historical Comparisons: It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch Davidian compound. That was a 51-day operation. It took less time to find evidence of chemical weapons in Iraq than it took Hillary Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records. It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took Teddy Kennedy to call the police after his Oldsmobile sunk at Chappaquiddick. It took less time to take Iraq than it took to count the votes in Florida in the year 2000! Damn our military is GREAT!
I am looking for information about Nickolaus (Nicholas) and Katharina GUCKERT. They were born in Bavaria, presumably in the region that became Rheinpfalz. Nickolaus GUCKERT was born September 8, 1808. I do not know the names of his parents. He immigrated to the United States along with his brother, Valentine GUCKERT in 1838. They settled in the City of Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Katharina GUCKERT was born on April 5, 1812 and died in the United States on January 19, 1886. I do not know her maiden name. I am looking for marriage information about Nickolaus and Katharina as well as the identity of their respective parents. Thank you.
I'm willing to bet that "Obermpfalz" is just a misspelling of Oberpfalz. Sulzbach-Rosenberg is a town in the Oberpfalz. You can find it using the Shtetlseeker: http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm Just place "Sulzbach-Rosenberg" into the search engine and select Germany from the dropdown menu. Then start the search. Don't worry about the other options. The search yields just one town by that name. Click on the coordinates and you will see a mapquest map with a red star for the approximate location. Zoom in for more detail and eventually the name. Zoom out to see the location in relation to the whole of Bavaria. Hope this helps. Mary Ann > Is the town Obermpfalz/Sulzback Rosenberg on current maps - part of the > old Saxon State? searching for <Sulzbach - Obernpfalz> at MultiMap.com brings several returns which include Sulzbach-Rosenberg a couple of times, returning what appear to be town and kirchen nearby. I have no clue what's right, but perhaps you know some other tidbits which might help sort it out. Seems you'll have to take the coordinates found on MultiMap, then see if it matches an old map - try FEETHS for older map. http://www.multimap.com/map/places.cgi?addr2=&addr3=Sulzbach+-+Obernpfalz+&pc=&db=DE&client=public&cname=Germany&advanced=&overviewmap=&Find..x=26&Find..y=6 good luck - ain't this fun? Johann NAGEL and Barbara PANZER were married in Sulzbach - Obernpfalz in 1700. Is Sulzbach - Obernpfalz the same town as that labled Sulzbach-Rosenberg on current maps? Ted vonWallmenich [email protected]

Those of you who read German might be interested in the following information. Sincerely, Michael Rauck

Hello, I think I made a mistake with the first letter. It is a K instead of a R. (Konigreidge). Does this look better? Janet
