    3. Dear Eric, I am happy to hear from you. I think you need to correspond with Ken Wiltz. I have only the family who came first to St.Clair Co, IL. My immigrant was Lorenz Haas who married Catherine Hopfinger. Lorenz Haas came with his parents in 1860. I will get back with you. I am rushing this morning. 3. Gail, could the 'O' also be an 'A' maybe? There is a Abenberg southwest of Nuernberg. In the old German handwriting the A almost looks like an O. Under http://www.deutscheschrift.de/ you can click on 'Schrift', the second word in the blue bar up top and get a 'translation' sheet for the German letters. The first line shows the handwriting the middle is latin letters as we use them today and the third is what would have been used to print. Sorry to just to make it even more complecated. Hello Pauline: The town still has the same name today, and is located northeast of Bad Mergentheim in Baden-Wuerttemberg. You can find it at maps.expedia.com or other online map service. LDS has filmed the evangelical church books, 1556-1876. If you go to google and enter "Schaftersheim Kirchen" (umlaut over the "a") there are several sites mentioning the churches, but all are in German. You might want to post a message to the Baden-Wuerttemberg list for assistance with your family. Good luck with your search. Paul C. Miller

If you have tried it, it's a must. I have found numerous ancestors from the early 1800's and you can rent the microfilm from one of their Family History Centers. Hope this helps. 3. Hi Eric, I suppose there might be a relationship between families living so close together, but not always. I remember the time my mother and father took me to a city 50 miles away from where we lived to meet some other WILTZes. We found out that they could go back to the 1600's and no connection. Years after of course I found out our old world surname had been WILZ, not WILTZ at all. The "T" was added after a couple or more decades of living in the new world. I have as I said a long line of HAAS family members, but I just checked and I have only one WEIGAND. He is Daniel S. WEIGAND born November 27, 1902 and died January 12, 1980 in Red Bank, Monmouth County, NJ. I do not know where he was born. As far as I know he is not related to HAAS. 3. Dear Ken, Unfortunately, no, none of your Haas family seems to connect with mine. Mine stayed mostly in the St.Clair Co. and surrounding counties and one went to the Hamilton Co. area. One other went to New Ulm, MN. I can't find Stroetzbach and Dornsteinbach, Bavaria on my maps. I have some old maps, unindexed and one present day map. Can you point them out to me by telling me what larger city they are near? Hohenmirsberg is north of Pottenstein which is north of Pegnitz. They are northeast of Nurenberg. Thanks for trying to connect. 3. Darlene, I thought probably no connection, but then no tries no gain. The county of Aschaffenburg is in the north west area of Bavaria, east of Frankfurt on the Main. It was Unterfranken, Lower Franconia in English and probably still is, but old county was Alzenau. They are all small villages, some have been annexed by largest around and called cities. My Wilz people came from Michelbach, which since 1975 has been part of the city of Alzenau, which now contains besides Michelbach, Wasserlos, Horstein, Kalberau and Albstadt. This is quite a distance from Nuremberg, however so likely no connection unless one goes a long way back. Good hunting to you. Ken Wiltz in CA

I assume the Amberg LDS films are not what you are looking for. Many of the Bavarian church records have been moved to the various diocesan archives, and, absent LDS films, you will have to rely on research services from the diocesan archives, or a private researcher, to obtain information. You will first have to determine in which Amberg your great-grandfather lived so that the correct records can be accessed and researched.
