Dan, Did you try multiple spellings of the first and last name? That is how I found my relatives... Ancestry.com is funny sometimes about really broad searches, but it did not give may any matches. Sorry. I have also found Ancestry.Com was not able to locate people I am almost certain were included in the 1930 Census. Has anyone found any tricks to finding people using the search capability? If not can anyone offer any advice for finding people in a state like Nebraska that was not indexed, other than searching manually through an entire county microfilm listing? I found George Haas listed as Gerald Harris and, Peter Borowski as Peter Breska. I was able to find these only because I knew the addresses. In Unterfranken, Bayern: HAAS, WEIGAND, GRIMM, BRUST, LINCK, SITZMANN, STEIN, AUL, HERGOTT Elsewhere: APPEL, BOROWSKI, CERNOHORSKY, DEMBOWCZYK, HAAS, PIETROWIAK, ZARAS

Hi, Dan, Do you have any idea if Carl Buchner was married? I found one who was married to a Mary Frances Martin in Missouri. (She was born in 1890.) There is a Carl born August 31, 1816, ini Freiberg, Germany and died June 227, 1883 in Hubbard, Dodge, Wisconsin, son of Johann Buchner and Charlotte Reiche. He married Johannah Bellack, who was born Dec. 29, 1820 in Tamaitsa, Germany. They have a child Ginig Buchner born December 30, 1851 in Sonneberg, Germany. There was a Carl Buchner married to a Florence Luke. They had a child Wallace August Buchner who was born 12 Sept 1922 in Sand Creek, Wisconsin. Are any of these your relatives? Hi, Krista, Maybe you are running into the same problem I have had. The transcribers cannot read the writing on the censuses and the names become distorted. I found a first name of Jasper spelled Jaktar one year and spelled a different way the next census. Some folks will only have a first initial and some will use their real given name or their nickname. And then there are distortions on those. I use wildcards a lot. Let's say I'm looking for WOERLE, WOERL, or WOEHRL. I'd enter the first name (And* for Andreas or Andrew) and the first three letters of the last name with wildcard "WOE*". If that gave me too many names, I'd also enter the birth location. I still have had a lot of trouble with 1930. I know where my people are, they're just not in Ancestry's index. This has happened enough that I'm starting to wonder if it is Ancestry. Don't know, though, they may have just gotten missed. Were you looking only or 1930 Nebraska or also earlier Nebraska (pre-1910)? With regards to my earlier post, I thought maybe Bavaria had an indexed census during the mid-1900's. Did they? Would I need to know where my ancesters lived exactly? Krista WOERL/BLEICHER in Bavaria
Dan, Ancestry.com's claims to indexing borders on fraud - only 1930 deserves any credit. It's a big change from the good way Ancestry started out - today it's all about profit :-((. I spent months searching there, and ended up making a spreadsheet to keep track of things! It got a little easier after I finally got DSL here! Suggest you first do your best to identify towns/townships for your people, and then go thru the tedium of page-by-page. It takes a while, but you'll get the hang of it. If you have a lot of needs as I did, plan a big "time budget"! I eventually made many discoveries critical to my own research - you will too. The only alternative I can think of is ordering the films, and that might be even worse! So just "take heart". The library has maps and a film to help obtain the enumeration district for each address. I then obtain the film for that ED number and look for the adddress, in order to copy their census record. ===== Marian http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~genealogylinks/

I am looking for information on the Friedl's from Germany. Josef Friedl left his home in Langdorf in the Bavarian Forest region on Germany in the early Fall of 1880. He travelled to Bremen and there he boarded the steamship "Leipzig" and set sail for America. He landed in Baltimore on Oct. 21, 1880. He travelled to St. Paul MN where he lived for 12 years. In 1887 he married Mathilda Fischer. In 1882 he moved with his family to a farm near Albany, MN. Josef was born of Feb. 13, 1849 in Langdorf, Germany. His father's name was also Josef Friedl born 1-9-1820. He married Katherina Heilingbrunner on March 2, 1851. I would like to find any descendant of this family. I would also like to find Josef's mothers name and any sibling he may have had. Thanks for your time, Paula
I am looking for a village in Bavaria that supposedly existed around 1810 named Lucktersbach. I have checked several World Gazetteers and the Historical Atlas of Germany prior to 1896 but to no avail. Has anyone heard of this village or is there possibly another spelling of the name. _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963

Hello, Fellow Listers! Am hoping someone can help me! First, does anyone know what the "Castle of Swans" is or was? Second, how might I go about finding out about a lady-in-waiting who was there in the first half of the 19th century who also a member of the Seel/Wagner family - that would be ? Seel and Catherine Wagner Seel, who had at least three children, Mary Ann; Louis and Sophie. Am not sure about the dates of birth from Louis and Sophie, but Mary Ann was born November 25, 1842. Also, I am not sure but I believe her father's - and Catherine's husband's - name may have been John or Louis... Would appreciate any help and/or suggestions! -T.G. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! DSL - Now only $29.95 per month!
Yes, there is a whole huge set of books called Germans To America, but there are only 2 CD's, 1850 to 1888. Too bad your ancestors came before the dates on the CD's. That's the way it always seems to work---either before or after what we are seeing in books or CD's!! You can check at your local library to see if there is a library in your area that has the set of books---then you could write to them and ask them to do a look-up. Or there is a place on here called something like "books we own" that does look-ups. Check the site for rootsweb to see where that site is if you are interested in using it. Or maybe someone can give you that address. Good luck!! Janice Danielson Sorry to burst your bubble, but the 1st CD only covers 1850--1874. It doesn't go back to 1840=49. Sorry!! Janice Someone wrote on one of the lists I belong to that there was either a CD or maybe a book with information before the CD #355. Ann
