    3. I am researching the Oest family. John George Oest b. abt 1725 arrived in the US from Rotterdam via Cowes on the ship Sandwich in November 30 1850. I have found no documents stating the town he immigrated from. When I look into other Oests born about the same time, they are all from the areas of Bavaria and Wurttemberg. I have checked films of the same towns/areas and found nothing. The Oests coming from the 1800s seem to all be from Northern Germany and Denmark. By 1800 they are all over Germany. I would appreciate any ideas or thoughts on what direction to proceed in to find his place of birth. So far I have found the name as mainly Oest or ACe , Ost, Ase, Effs, Ese, Est. Does anyone know if Oster is a variation of the name?

    3. Gail, I'm sure if an American heard Offenburg or Offenberg, he might spell them the same. It would only hurt in extra expense and/or time to write to both. I would write first to the Catholic Diocesan archive for Offenberg, Bavaria at: Archiv des Bistums Passau Luragogasse 4 D-94032 Passau Germany Give them the name, town, and date of birth of your ancestor. There is a fee, even if they don't find his record, but you seem to have good information now. Good luck, Norm ----- Original Message ----- From: Gail E. I was told by helpful people on the Banat Rootsweb list that Herrischried is a location of interest in these matters. My maiden name is Kothstein, I was born in Detroit, Michigan, my grandparents came from Setschan in what is now Serbia and Montenegro. They were ethnic Germans and I am searching for earlier records and links to the present ones. If you have any information or know where I can look, please advise. 1. [BAVARIA] Dirnberger family of the Munich area
    2. Kyle Lamers
    3. Adam and Susanna Sailer Dirnberger brought their family to the US about 1845, at New Orleans, and went upriver to settle at New Hamburg, Scott County, Mo. Adam was born in 1797 and Susanna in 1799. They had six children and were Catholic. Granddaughters indicated that their father had come from Munich. Since Adam and his son Michael were farmers, I wonder whether the family had originally been from metropolitan Munich or, perhaps, from a rural community nearby. In any event, I am searching for the place of origin of Adam Dirnberger and his family. Any assistance would be appreciated regarding this aspect of the search. I have information forward from the time of their settlement in New Hamburg. Duane Lamers [email protected] --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! 3. Hi Judy, thanks for the response. It is certainly possible that your John Schneider born 1838 and my Valentine Schneider born about 1842 could have been brothers. However, I think the name Schneider is very common in Bavaria and Valentin and John/Johan/Johannes are also pretty common as given names. My Valentine Schneider had a son John Valentine Schneider which might add a tiny bit of credence to the possibility of brothers. Do you know where in Bavaria your John was born? We have his naturalization papers (he signed Valentin Snyder) and they only say Kingdom of Bavaria--no parish mentioned in any of the records we have found to date on this man. He immigrated in 1864 according to his naturalization papers. We searched the ship arrival records for arrivals to New York City prior to Oct 30 1864. We found a Val Schneider age 20 laborer from Germany, on the SS Louisiana Oct 1864 from Liverpool. We found Valentine Snyder in the 1870 U. S. Census in Bridgewater Township, Somerset, New Jersey. In the 1880 U. S. Census he is living in Manhattan, New York. In 1899 Valentine's son, John Valentine, is in Jersey City, New Jersey where he married Dorothy Langrehr.
