    3. Thanks for your offer Ann! That is very kind of you! John immigrated in 1849, but I am not sure when his wife came to America. They had their first child in 1852 so it had to be prior to that. I would appreciate it if you would see if you can find any information of her on your cd's. Her name was Catherine. Her last name was listed as Schwartz-Miller, in one place and Miller in another. She was born 8/19 1829 in Bavaria. I don't know of any other Bohns or Millers that might have immigrated in that time period, that were related to John or Catherine Thanks for your help! 3. Thanks [email protected] for the names of other Bohns who were married in Rochester. Maybe some more research of those names will give me clues as to how they might be related to my ancestors and give me more information. Living that close to each other surely makes it a possibility. Thanks again! Cindy

    2. Bohn <[email protected]> Cindy, Was your ancestor or one of his relatives in the Civil War or in the US Military? I found a great grandfathers Sachsen-Altenburg birthplace from his brothers Civil War Records. When checking church records see if there is a Membership List or Seelen Record. That would be separate section from the birth, marriage, death records. I found another great great grandfather's place of marriage in Meseritz, Posen, Prussian from that section of the church book. Many of the members were immigrants, and it listed birthdates, etc. LaVerne

    3. Thank you for all your replies and suggestions. I have checked the LDS website many times without any luck, but will continue to check it. Changing names over the years makes it challenging :) I can only hope that if I ever do find information there, that it will be more accurate than some of the other information I have gotten from that site. I will pursue checking with the church records in the town he lived in. He lived in Webster NY, and did have a sister named Mary...but she lived past 1881. Thank you again for your help and suggestions! 3. Hello, Try search for the church records from the town in which he lived in, here in America. Very often when someone died they list the town in which they came from in their chruch records. This has been a big help for me. Mine were Lutheran and they do have more in the records than Catholic I believe. Another thing I would believe the immigration records over the other sources that you mentioned. Happy hunting and don't give up!! You will find something somewhere. Marguerite Hi! I continue to struggle with knowing where to go next in my research of the John Bohn family. The New York census records all say the family members came from Baden. John's death certificate just says he was born in Germany in 1825. He immigrated from Bremen to America in 1849. The original immigration lists from Bremen were destroyed in World War II, so the available immigration lists were created as arrivals in New York, rather than departures from Bremen. Most people immigrating from Bremen were listed as coming from Mittelrüsselbach Germany, whether they did or not. John's declaration of intent to become an American citizen lists his place of origin as Bavaria. Because of the different information from the various sources, I don't know if John came from Baden or Bavaria, and even if that were known for sure, I still don't know which town in either of those areas he came from. I know I can't write for more information anywhere in Germany until I have a town location. Any ideas where I can go from here to get that information or where I should go from here?? Any help would be most appreciated. 3. Hi John, I don't honestly know if there is a connection between GUNTHER - GEINTER and GEITNER. Maybe someone could help? I have found relatives connected with the GEINTERs - one is recorded as GUENTHER and two others as GUNTHER. I think that in 1880 the person who took down the names of the two families in the house in Rochester, New York, made the same mistake for all of them. They may have had accents and the enumerator wrote what he heard. Thanks for keeping me in mind and best wishes, Charles

    3. Hi John, Thanks for the list but I have checked this out and there aren't any that link up. They are not early enough. Frederick married in 1865 and maybe Henry married before this, though the eldest of the two sons listed (they may have been other children) was born the same year. My computer has limited surfing power and I have been unable the last two days to enter the LDS website. I managed a short visit and found Henry but after that nothing. The GUNTHERS (or however that was spellt at different times) seem to have entered the UK in the mid 1840s and may have stayed some time before moving to the States. Certainly, if these two GEINTERs (a name which doesn't appear on any Monroe county records - only GUNTHERs, GUENTHERs, GINTERs and GANTERs) were brothers they may have been part of a family. The parents may have been dead by 1880. Where they lived before this time is unknown. Thanks and best wishes, Charles

    3. Hi Listers, Since my last posting I have found a possible third son of Carl (Charles) GUNTHER/GUENTHER. I'd found a family in Rochester, New York, who could be related to my great grandfather Carl (Charles) GUNTHER, son of the above, and born, so he said, in Switzerland between 1835 and 1840. However, his brother (?) Fritz (Frederick) GUENTHER/GEINTER was born in Bavaria in 1833. I have now found living in the same house Henry GEINTER also born in Bavaria and in 1820. This man could be Frederick and Charles's older brother. It is possible then that Carl GUNTHER had at least three sons: Henry, Frederick and Charles. Any information on these would be welcomed. Best wishes, Charles

    1. [BAVARIA] Arzberger/Bauer
    2. Hello List: I am a newbie researching the above names. I have a family bible from Thierstein, Franken Oben, Bavaria, Germany that lists my first known ancestor of this line, George Nicol ARZBERGER changed to ARTZBERGER once in this Country. He was confirmed at the Evan Lutheran in Thierstein. He made confirmation about 1855 and also married Anna Margaretha BAUER of same area and church membership whose father, George BAUER came to USA along with her, mother unknown, must have been deceased before this time. Anyone having common ties, please do respond. I found a Starke Genealogy index at Rootsweb that claims it has a publication that contains information about Austrian/Germany nobility connected w/ the Arzberger surname. Am thinking about ordering but it doesn't list a price for the book. Thanks for any feedback in advance, Kimberly Pittsburgh, PA Surnames: ARTZBERGER, ADKINS, ANDRIESSEN, ACKERMANN, BAUER, BURCHETT, BAXTER, BRAEKE, CALHOON,, CRAWFORD, CHAFFIN, CHESNEY, COLLIER, CORBIN, CORBY, CRANE, CORSTANG, CURNUTTE, EWING, FANNIN, GLENN, GREEN, GOINS, HEDFORD, HERRON, HOLBROOK, KENDIG, LYON, LUKASICKY, MEEK, MUDIE, MILLARD, MCLAUGHLIN,, MCCRACKEN, NEITZNICK, RUTH, SAGER, SIGLER, SIKES, STEPHENS, SKIDMORE, SQUIRE, TOLIVER,, VAN GIESEN, VAN VOORHESE, VREELAND, VAN SENT, VAN GROENLAND, WESSELS, WHITEHILL, WHITE, ZUNDELBACH ET AL

    1. [BAVARIA] GUNTHERs/GUENTHERs in Bavaria?
    2. evans-gunther
    3. Dear Listers, I visited this List earlier this year but am now back with more extra information. My family is thought to have come from Switzerland, but recent finds may indicate the family was on the move. My great grandfather Charles (Carl) GUNTHER said, on several official occasions, that he had been born in Switzerland. We also knew that he may have had a brother called Fritz, which I believe is short for Frederick. A Frederick has been found in Rochester, New York, who fits the bill but he was born in Bavaria. My great grandfather described his father, also Charles (Carl) GUNTHER, as being a labourer. It is possible a small family moved from Bavaria to Switzerland (and maybe even back) during the 1830s-1840s. Frederick GUNTHER (also recorded as GUENTHER, GINTER and GEINTER) was born in Bavaria in c. 1833, married a Catherina DOELL, from Hesse-Darmstadt, in c. 1865, possibly in Canada, and there followed two children - Emma and Anna. They then moved to Rochester and were found on the 1880 Census minus Anna. Emma later married a Jacob MAECHERLIN in 1886 in Rochester. Frederick died in 1908 and Catherina in 1915. I would be interested to hear about any GUNTHER or GUENTHER families in Bavaria. I have only the name of the two sons - Frederick and Carl and their father Carl. I am not sure of the naming systems used in Bavaria (or Switzrland, come to that) but often the first son seems to be named after the father - so, there may have been a Carl before Frederick who died and thus a second one. We have a story in the family about a mother being Polish, but that may be further back and could be the elder Carl's mother. Any help or suggestions would be gratefully accepted. Best wishes from a wet Japan (Typhoon 15 is on its way here), Charles
