    3. Max, I can certainly understand the cautiousness. Many of my family gave such conflicting dates, it took years to sort it all out. Some didn't even know their own ages or birthdates! Death certs are notorious for inaccurate information if not backed up with other sources. The person giving information at the time of death often guessed or repeated family stories. I hope your trip is fruitful. Church records can be of great help if available. I noticed on the LDS site there were many of that surname, and almost all came from Pfalz. I am originally from Minnesota, but have called Denver home since 1969. The death certificate that I have says he was 47 when he died in 1866. That would put his birth year at 1819, a difference of about 7 years. But you know how frequently dates, ages, records are askew. I believe this Peter traveled with a Jacob Dauenhauer about 2 years younger. I am planning a trip to New Orleans in May and I hope I can find something to confirm or reject this Peter. Interesting about the reference to his service in the Militia. That gives me another clue to look into. Where is home Sandy? I was born in New Orleans but left there in the 1960s and now call St. Louis home. Our son and family lives here and we retired here. However, if you are looking for the church books to research your family, they might have been moved to a diocesan archive. You could send an e-mail to the diocesan archives in Limburg and ask where the Lendorf records can be found. The e-mail address is: _archiv@bistumlimburg.de_ (mailto:archiv@bistumlimburg.de) . LDS has no entry for church records for Lendorf. Paul Miller

    3. Hi Richard, If you have not already done so, it could be productive for you to obtain a copy of the actual manifest itself from NARA (National Archives and Records Administration). Many times, the manifest can give you additional information such as last place of residence. Other passengers names may ring a bell for you, or give clues to the places of origin of them. He could be grouped with other passengers from the same area. Go to: http://www.archives.gov/<http://www.archives.gov/> and from the pull down list in the upper right corner, click on "How Do I?" Scroll down to "Ship Passenger Arrival Records" which will direct you as to how to order the manifest you need. You can do it on line or by requesting the form and mailing it in at a later time. You didn't say where he settled or what his religion was. If you know of a parish he attended, they may have information about where he came from as the churches often recorded this information. Marriage or birth/christening records often identified the place the party originated from, or at times the last parish they attended in the homeland. Good luck with your search. 2. A while ago I asked a question concerning Obersinn, Bavaria. A couple of months ago I received a post from a man who lived there and told me there was one cemetery in Obersinn and it did contain headstones of HOFMANN. (Which is my family line) He was kind enough to offer to take pictures. Well, that was the end of it, never heard from him again. I asked for the name of the cemetery and he wouldn't answer me. So, I'm asking for help. Does anyone on list live in the Obersinn area? Would you know the name of the cemetery that I could write to them? (He did say it was Catholic and Lutheran )? or Catholic and something else. I'm actually planning a trip within the next year and I really would like to cover some ground work before I leave NY. I need the nearest airport to Obersinn. Is there a tourism area that deals with the town? In the states, we have what's called a "Chamber of Commerce" or a Historic Society if the town is old. Is there one for Obersinn? Can anyone recommend hotels in the area or the town itself? Thanks so much. You may contact me off list. Nancy

    3. My ancestor, George Wing, lived in Zweibrucken near Homburg that I understand is near the Alsace, French border. I wanted to order films from the family history center for Homburg in hopes of finding the Wings but did not know what to order as there were several Homburgs along with the name of what I assume is a district, region, or state after it. I tried to figure it out myself by looking at maps but wasn't successful as that area apparently changed a lot over the years. So, I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could help me in figuring out the proper film to order. Many thanks, Ruth Ruth

    3. Dear BAVARIA-L When I opened Friday's (25 Mar 05) e-mail this was waiting for me. Is it a practical joke? Spam that somehow found its way into this really good site? A typo? Click on it please and send me an explanation. I don't get it. 3. John, Sorry. I realized tonight I hadn't responded to you request for help. I will be happy to look for specific records for you, but not for every instance of Merkle, Heilman and Mehring. There will be just far too many. Perhaps you can look at familysearch.org and let me know which records you'd like. I will not be returning to the FHC very soon. I'll be traveling for a while. They are holding on to the film for me, however, and I should be able to return to my research before the end of April. My FHC is nearly an hour and a half a way. Time is more critical to me than the cost of the copies Please e-mail me directly and not through the list.
