    3. Hi Donna, Most German towns from 1800 still exist today, so any modern detailed map would be good. However, that is tedious and even harder since you appear to have a spelling error. Here's a suggestion for you. Go to the complete alphabetic Bavaria town list at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bavaria/places.html and search for a town or towns spelled similar to "Barrastot ". Alternatively, go to JewishGen town locator at http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm , insert Borrastot, select Germany for the country, and Start The Search. Alternative spellings will be suggested, such as Barsadt, Berstadt, Bierstadt, and Borrstadt. Click on the coordinates of any town to see it presented on an interactive map. Other list members have suggested that the initial B may be a V, so you can insert next time the name Varrastot and see where that goes. I searched the online Germany phonebook for the name "Knoffloch". Strangely, there is no one in all of Gemany with that name today. Could this be another spelling error? Could it have been something else, like "Knoblauch"? Many German immigrants had their names changed in America, sometimes accidentally due to spelling errors and sometimes intentionally to avoid things back home. If the correct spelling is not Barrastot, how will you recognize the correct town name if you see it? Do you have other clues regarding the town? A nearby river or forest or city? 2. Maryanne Jefferson
    3. The pioneer for our Hohmann family in America was Carl Hohmann. He was born in Germany on 3 September 1849 . He was the son of Johanus & Margaret (Haall) Hohmann . He left Germany from the Port of Bremen as a steerage passenger on the S.S. Koenig Wilhelm I and arrived at the Port of New York on 1 November 1873 . His listed occupation was as a shoemaker. Also unclear is when and where Carl married Philippina Steuer. According to her death certificate she was born in Germany abt. 1852. The 1920 census lists 1870 as her year of immigration to the United States. Her parents were Anthony & Magdeline Steuer, both born in Germany. If anyone has connections with this family, I would love to exchange information. I have been unable to find the Hohmann's in Germany. But I do have information about numerous Hohmann's from the Boston area. Thanks, Maryanne Jefferson Boston, MA

Hi Donna, According to maps found at Shtetlseeker, there are some possibilities. I agree that the spelling you have is the likely culprit. I found two close variations for towns in what was once Old Bavaria. See map at http://www.tr62.de/maps/g1.htm<http://www.tr62.de/maps/g1.htm> . The first is Barstadt, located approx. 8 mi. west of Wiesbaden. The second is Borrstadt, located approx. 30 mi. south of Wiesbaden. Hi Donna: What was your source for the name Barrastot? I checked several sources, but could not find a town/area, etc. with a similar name. Google has only one reference, which looks like a surname. If your source was an American record, it sounds like a corrupted spelling. Perhaps "stot" = "statt" or "stadt". You didn't mention your ancestor's name, but did you already check IGI to see if he is listed there? You also mentioned "Barvaria" and I assume you mean "Bavaria" in southern Germany? If so, have you checked google for information? The archives of this Bavaria list might also provide you with helpful information. Paul C. Miller
