My ggggrandfather is William Uriah Baughman, born abt 1809 in SC and died 1891 in Carroll County, GA. The 1830 census in Lexington County SC lists him as William Baukman. 1840 Census in Abbeville County SC lists him as Wm. Bauchman. He moved the family to Carroll Conty GA by the 1850 Census and he is listed there as Uriah Baughman, 41 yrs old. We think his father is a Jacob Baughman, but I have very little to support that and no dates. Maybe you can help me! The 1800 Census in Lexington County SC shows a Even Baukman with sons Harmon, John and Ulrich. The difficulty of reading the 1800 documents makes the spelling suspect and sketchy. One of William Uriah Baughman sons - Joseph Jasper Baughman, changed the surname spelling to Balkman when he was drafted into the Civil War, my line has been known by Balkman ever since. Let me know how we can help each other. sbalkman@nai-psp.com Steve Balkman Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
