    3. Hi Marilyn, I don't know why the swastika would be on the picture, but this was long before Hitler made it into a symbol we associate with evil. Maybe the photographer just used it as decoration for no particular reason. As to going to Ohio, I think this was just part of the westward flow of the country. As lands opened up it was a chance for Germans and others to get some farmland cheaply--maybe even free if they had been revolutionary soldiers like my Henry Baughman. After Ohio folks kept moving west to IN, IL, the midwest, etc. as new lands opened up. Some Baughmans from my branch went from Stark, OH to St. Joseph, IN to Towner, ND (briefly) and then Wenatchee, WA. My great-great-grandfather Jacob Baughman went from Stark to Pike, IL but his son Daniel reversed direction to move to Kosciusko, Co, IN, grandmother then moved to WI, and dad to Oregon. I have generations of ancestors where no one was buried in the same area they were born in. By the way, is your John the John Madison Baughman who was married to Lucinda McDaniel? If so he was a descendant of Abraham Baughman, brother of my Henry. Henry went to Stark Co., Abraham to Richland Co., OH, and another brother George to Franklin Co., OH. But other relatives (using the spelling Bachman) remained behind in the Northampton/Lehigh Co. area. 3. Hi, Sorry I meant to say the swastika was on the front of the little card type folder. It was probably the photographers own design at one time, anyway it's interesting. Yes the swastika wasn't always a symbol of evil. Webster's dictionary says it's FR, welfare, well, "A symbol or ornament in the form of a Greek cross with the ends of the arms bent at right angles. Very interesting on the Baughman's. My John Baughman (don't have his middle initial), was married to a Lucinda, they had Nancy, Benjamin, WILLIAM (my ggrandfather), Cynthia, Sarah and Andrew, not sure if they had more children. He is listed on the 1870 census, Morgan Co., Richland Twp Versalies MO as being 29 years old. On the 1880 census for Mill Creek, Morgan Co. MO, he's not listed but Lucinda is with all children. Could mine be the same John Madison Baughman? I will be very happy if he is. Thanks, Marilyn --- Philip Ritter <philr@stanford.edu> wrote: > Hi Marilyn, > > I don't know why the swastika would be on the > picture, but this was long > before Hitler made it into a symbol we associate > with evil. 3. Hello, Phillip ... I am curious about your Abraham Baughman of Richland Co., OH. I have Abraham Baughman, b. abt 1812; m. Elizabeth MOSSHOLDER (b.1824)in 1841 Knox Co. OH. Ten children, all born in Licking Co., OH, included males: Lewis Cass Baughman, b. 1842; m. Lucinda SCOTT Charles Monroe Baughman, b. 1845 James Matason Baughman, b. 1847; m. Ann RAMSLY Lafayette Adam Baughman, b. 1849 (my gggrandfather), m. Rebecca HOPE John Calvin Baughman, b. 1851 David Ross Baughman, b. 1860 Wondering if this Abraham might be your Henry's brother? Richland County must figure into this family, since my BAUGHMAN/TAYLOR grandmother had a family heirloom coverlet made by weaver, Samuel Meily, 1846, Richland Co., OH. Do you spy any connections? 3. Sorry, don't see a connection. Our Abraham was born 1749 and died 1821. He had a son Abraham (1787-1848) who had a son Abraham b. ca. 1821, but I don't see your Abraham among descendants or anywhere in my database. Anyone else have information for Jennifer?
