.Hi Phil, This is Lyn El-Zein, Kinsearch2@comcast.net) again. You helped me find my link to Della Baughman's ancestors. I think I promised you my line down and forgot. I will get that for you ASAP. My line, in short, goes like this. Della M. Baughman married Freedom Watson Story, had Helen Lucile. Helen Lucille Story married Wayne Emory Inman and they had 2 children, my dad, Alan Wayne and his brother Arther Story. Arther never married. My dad married Lois Hilda Menne and there are 6 of us kids, with 5 children between us and 5 great grandchildren. I have a Delia M Baughman listed in my family. The only information I have on her is that she married Freedom Watson Story (b. 15 Mar 1860) before 1885. I would be interested in finding more information on her. Caryn
I have lots of information on many of Delia's ancestors (although my records show her name as Della M., which may be an error or perhaps a nickname). She was a 2nd cousin of my grandmother (Ella Baughman). I can send you an ancestor report if your computer can handle Word attachments. I don't have much on her descendants beyond her children's names and some spouses, and would appreciate any information on such. Hi List, Wasn't there a Baughman DNA project? What ever happened to it? Anyone know? And how does one access it if there is one? Phyllis
Yes there is an ongoing project. J. Ross Baughman started the project 3 or 4 years ago and the there have been nearly 30 participants in both the U.S. and Europe. It is a y-chromosome project, which means participants must be male and have the Bachman/Baughman name (or strongly suspect that they got the Bachman y-chromosome through a patrilineal ancestor otherwise). The y-chromosome is passed down more or less unchanged from father to son, so tends to follow surnames. Unfortunately females do not have y-chromosomes so cannot directly participate, except through a father, brother or patrilateral cousin. I've been trying to put together a web-page summarizing the results so far, but am way behind. You can compare the first 20 or so participants by going to http://www.stanford.edu/~philr/Bachman/BACHMAN.htm There is no explanation there, just a bunch of numbers for the different markers that were tested, but you can email me with further questions. J. Ross is writing a book that will include the information gathered so far, but I can do a rough summary. About half the participants have been found to match each other indicating a common ancestor. This cluster has its origin in the Old Castle area of Richterswil, Canton Zurich, Switzerland and included my ancestor (Johan Georg Bachman, b. 1686) and Ross's ancestor Henry Baughman (b. 1711), as well as several Bachmanns who still live in Switzerland. A second group comes from the same area, but has a different y-chromosome. We don't know if this indicates a long-ago adoption or illegitimacy (where the y-chromosome would have come from a non-Bachman) or a separate origin of the Bachman name that just happened to end up in the same area. A third group includes descendants in Kentucky and Pennsylvania as well as one Swiss participant born in Canton Aargau. There are also more than a half dozen participants who don't match anyone else so far. You can email me or J. Ross (at j_ross_baughman@hotmail.com) for further information. I can supply further information, including how to sign up or to sponsor a participant. Phil At 04:44 PM 11/27/2004, you wrote: >Hi List, >Wasn't there a Baughman DNA project? Hi everyone - I am trying to research my direct lineage and am stuck on William Uriah Balkman. A record shows that his name may have been changed from Baughman or perhaps Bauchman or even Baukman. He was born in 1809 in South Carolina and married Sarah E. or A. abt 1838. He died 25 Feb 1891 in Carroll County, Georgia. His children all used the Balkman name. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
