I have Lila Baughman dau of Isaiah junior and Eliza Stapleford married Ira B. King on 24 Feb 1889 in Howell Co., MO (twelve children). The 1910 census has Lila born IL (it was most likely Edwards Co., where her father married her mother and is buried), and for her parents birthplaces, "unknown." Actually it was Carroll Co., OH for Isaiah junior, and probably IL for Eliza. She remarried Alvin Hill after Isaiah died in 1873. It is no wonder Lila might not know where her father was born, as she was only about 1 when he died. Rhonda or Martha send me an email at philr@stanford.edu for more information. Phil

My ggrandfather was her half brother. His name was Orlando. I have a copy of my Lila's marriage record somewhere (I'll look for it). She was married in Howell County, MO and Orlando lied on the certificate and stated that he was her father. My Lila and Orlando had the same father, but different mothers.

John is the son of John (senior) and Elizabeth Weygandt. The clue is Christian Co., IL. In the 1860 census, John junior and Mary can be found there with seven kids still at home, Sarah age 5 the youngest, all having been born in Ohio. They match the John and Mary who can be found in 1850 in Baughman township, Wayne Co. (dwelling 144). John senior was the son of Abraham Baughman, brother of my ancestor Henry. Baughman township was named after John senior who settled there, while his father Abraham settled in Richland Co., OH. I don't know who Mary is, unless she is the Polly Hershey who married a John Baughman junior in Stark Co., OH on Sep 17, 1835. Does anyone have further information on the wife of John junior (son of John senior of Baughman township)?

We are fairly certain that he changed the spelling of his last name from Baughman to Balkman. Any of you Baughmans trace ancestors to South Carolina? I know there were a number of Swiss protestants who immigrated to South Carolina in earlier decades, although I have no proof of my ancestors origins. Help from anyone is appreciated. Another interesting find - I have contact with a large group of African American in Florida and Georgia who are related and all have the surnames of Balkman, Balkmon, Baulkman and Baulkmon. My ancestors left South Carolina and went to Georgia. Steve Balkman

They had 9 children, so sounds like one and the same family. Catherine Ann is their first child, (who married Francis Dungan) and who I'm related through. I JUST got back from taking photos of their headstones and such and a dear lady just sent me David's will and other documents. I did get all the Baughman records I could find at the courthouse in Shelby Co. - just haven't had a minute to get it all together and recorded and see what all I really do have. I couldn't find anything for Thomas J. and can't find any census records for him other than 1850 in Noble Co., IN. He DID marry Elizabeth I know but where did he go to live? Let me know if I can help - but do have patience with me - I'll need some time to get it all in order.

I'm descended through their oldest child, Catherine Ann Baughman who married Francis Dungan. I just found undisputable proof that this is indeed my line so am now starting the hunt on the family info. I was just in Shelby Co., IA and took photos of most all the headstones and went to the courthouse and got what I could there - now to organize it all! Hope to hear from you soon.
