Hi Joe, My dad was born in OK City, 1915, on the 1920 census his grandparents William and Lillie Drake Baughman were living in the 3rd ward, OK City. My ggrandparents William and Lillie were both born in MO. First son Claude W. born MO 1888, LaVerne A.(Vern) born KS 1892, daughter Jessie M. born MO 1890, Nina E. 1894 OK, Freda M. (my grandmother) born 1896 OK. As far as I know most of my Baughman relations stayed on in OK. My grandmother Freda died in OK City in 1959, her closest sister was called Aunt Sis or Sis, she was married to Henry Seik a large German man. My dad was an only child and his parents Harry B. Wilson and Freda Baughman Wilson divorced early and dad was raised until a teen by his Baughman grandparents, this is why I know they spoke German. Hi Marilyn, I don't know why the swastika would be on the picture, but this was long before Hitler made it into a symbol we associate with evil. Maybe the photographer just used it as decoration for no particular reason. As to going to Ohio, I think this was just part of the westward flow of the country. As lands opened up it was a chance for Germans and others to get some farmland cheaply--maybe even free if they had been revolutionary soldiers like my Henry Baughman. After Ohio folks kept moving west to IN, IL, the midwest, etc. as new lands opened up. Some Baughmans from my branch went from Stark, OH to St. Joseph, IN to Towner, ND (briefly) and then Wenatchee, WA. My great-great-grandfather Jacob Baughman went from Stark to Pike, IL but his son Daniel reversed direction to move to Kosciusko, Co, IN, grandmother then moved to WI, and dad to Oregon. I have generations of ancestors where no one was buried in the same area they were born in. By the way, is your John the John Madison Baughman who was married to Lucinda McDaniel? If so he was a descendant of Abraham Baughman, brother of my Henry. Henry went to Stark Co., Abraham to Richland Co., OH, and another brother George to Franklin Co., OH. But other relatives (using the spelling Bachman) remained behind in the Northampton/Lehigh Co. area. Rebecca: I heard long ago that the name means lumberjack. My grandfather told a family member our line came from the border of Germany and Holland. I am still searching beyond my gggg grandfather, Levi Baughman and wife Nancy Ann from Allegany Co., Maryland. Looking forward to seeing who else answers. Maybe I will find a connection. Genny Baughman Payne
I am searching for any information re. the meaning of the name Baughman. Can anyone out there help me at all? I greatly appreciate it. Rebecca Baughman
Hi again Philip, I was looking through my Baughman census for 1870 Morgan Co. Mo, my gggrandfather John Baughman was born in Ohio c 1841. Hi Philip, Very interesting. I've been researching my paternal grandmother's side for awhile and had heard from my father his grandmother spoke German to him when he was little. After some queries I was told that sometimes German would be spoken around the house and English elsewhere. I have something I'm interested in finding out about if possible and that is a small picture holder with my grandmother's picture in it. It's paper like thin cardboard, inside has an oval opening, only mark on it is a swastika, I don't believe my grandmother ever went to Germany, could there have been a photographer who was German and used these photo frames? Any information or thoughts would be appreciated. It looks as though my grandmother was a young teen, so the circa of the frame and photo would be about 1909, and they lived in OK. Thanks, Marilyn Wilson --- Philip Ritter <philr@stanford.edu> wrote: > Bach refers to a stream or brook, and in the > dictionary of German names > (Bahlow, translation 2nd edition 2002), the entry > for Bachmann has "see > Bach." Bach refers to a stream or brook, and in the dictionary of German names (Bahlow, translation 2nd edition 2002), the entry for Bachmann has "see Bach." Under Bach it says "from the dwelling on a stream." Thus Bachmann (the modern German spelling) or Bachman would suggest 'one who lives by a stream' or 'brook person.' I believe the Baughman spelling came about as an attempt to render the German pronunciation into English spelling. The au (as in caught) being close to the sound of the German a and the gh and attempt to get at the German -ch which is kind of like an h but in the upper back of the throat like a g. Interestingly some Bachmanns from the same family (the Richterswil, Canton Zurich branch of the Bachmanns) retained the Bachman spelling (Samuel-born 1738-who went to TN, Jacob-b. 1759- who went to NY and whose son the Rev John Bachman settled in SC, as well as most who remained in the Lehigh/Northampton area) while others switched to Baughman (most who went to Ohio including my ancestors and Henry Baughman-b. 1711-who settled in VA). Later generations have sometimes modified the pronunciation to match the spelling and then changed the spelling again. Thus one branch of the TN Samuel Bachman's descendants go by Bofman. Hope this helps. At 07:17 PM 11/1/2005, you wrote: >I am searching for any information re. the meaning of the name Baughman. Can >anyone out there help me at all?
