Joan I have Mary J. Smith born in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio and married Jacob Baughman on December 6, 1835 in Dayton, Montgomery Co., Ohio. They then came to Springfield, Greene Co., Mo. If they lived else where in Ohio I do not know. I do know that there is another Jacob Baughman in Ohio who married Catherine Wilheim and their Civil War records are so mixed up that you can not tell where one ends and the other one starts. Jacob Baughman was my (several) great grandfather. I would like to locate his parents and other relatives. Have him on the census from1840 thru 1870 all in Greene Co. Mo. and on tax lists. Have all children names, dates and some spouses. Will exchange information. Bettye

Wow... had some close ones nearby. My Baughmans were from PA to Muskingum Co, Ohio, Ill, then to Reno Co just NW of Wichita. Mine are: John Baughman Henry Clay Baughman Harry S. Baughman Glenn R. Baughman Joe Baughman (me!) Do you have a copy of the Baughman book?
Hello, Phillip ... I am curious about your Abraham Baughman of Richland Co., OH. I have Abraham Baughman, b. abt 1812; m. Elizabeth MOSSHOLDER (b.1824)in 1841 Knox Co. OH. Ten children, all born in Licking Co., OH, included males: Lewis Cass Baughman, b. 1842; m. Lucinda SCOTT Charles Monroe Baughman, b. 1845 James Matason Baughman, b. 1847; m. Ann RAMSLY Lafayette Adam Baughman, b. 1849 (my gggrandfather), m. Rebecca HOPE John Calvin Baughman, b. 1851 David Ross Baughman, b. 1860 Wondering if this Abraham might be your Henry's brother? Richland County must figure into this family, since my BAUGHMAN/TAYLOR grandmother had a family heirloom coverlet made by weaver, Samuel Meily, 1846, Richland Co., OH. Do you spy any connections? Jennifer David -----Original Message----- From: Philip Ritter [mailto:philr@stanford.edu] Sent: Wednesday, November 02, 2005 2:40 AM To: BAUGHMAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BAUGHMAN] onomastics of Baughman and OK grandmother Baughman Hi Marilyn, I don't know why the swastika would be on the picture, but this was long before Hitler made it into a symbol we associate with evil. Maybe the photographer just used it as decoration for no particular reason. As to going to Ohio, I think this was just part of the westward flow of the country. As lands opened up it was a chance for Germans and others to get some farmland cheaply--maybe even free if they had been revolutionary soldiers like my Henry Baughman. After Ohio folks kept moving west to IN, IL, the midwest, etc. as new lands opened up. Some Baughmans from my branch went from Stark, OH to St. Joseph, IN to Towner, ND (briefly) and then Wenatchee, WA. My great-great-grandfather Jacob Baughman went from Stark to Pike, IL but his son Daniel reversed direction to move to Kosciusko, Co, IN, grandmother then moved to WI, and dad to Oregon. I have generations of ancestors where no one was buried in the same area they were born in. By the way, is your John the John Madison Baughman who was married to Lucinda McDaniel? If so he was a descendant of Abraham Baughman, brother of my Henry. Henry went to Stark Co., Abraham to Richland Co., OH, and another brother George to Franklin Co., OH. But other relatives (using the spelling Bachman) remained behind in the Northampton/Lehigh Co. area. It certainly is the same person that I have in my database. Of course, I could be wrong since the information I have came from various sources (mainly censuses and the internet) of varying reliability. In the history of Richland Co., OH, there is a section on the Baughman family (see http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Richland/RichlandMansfield.htm, ignore the part about Abraham being born on the Atlantic Ocean, which is almost certainly not true but may refer to Abraham's father Heinrich who was born in 1717 and arrived in PA in 1717). It mentions David the son of Abraham junior, who married Rebecca "Wolfs." The David Baughman and wife Rebecca found in Osage Twp, Morgan Co., MO in the 1850 census (dwelling 459) is generally believed to be this David. You will see children Jackson, William, John and Amena[or Arena aka Irene], all born Ohio. John, aged 9, is undoubtedly your John, who married Lucinda McDaniel (aka Sophonia) on 30 Sep 1860 in Morgan Co., MO. Although the marriage record lists Sophonia, all the censuses have her as Lucinda (e.g. with her parents in 1850 in dwelling 286 in Richland Twp., p. 241) I'm not sure where I got the name John Madison that I have in my database. A few pages down in the census (dwelling 482), one can find David's brother William Baughman who served in the MO state legislature. William moved to MO first (in the fall of 1838 according to a bio) and his 10-year old was born in MO, while David was still in OH in 1845 when his 5-year old daughter was born there. William's presence adds credence to the supposition that David and Rebecca in Morgan Co., MO are the same David and Rebecca from Richland, OH. Do you have a death date for Lucinda? I only have that she died after 1920 (when she was living in Mill Creek) and probably before 1930 (when I did not find her in the census). I can supply more information on John Baughman's ancestry, but maybe we should go off list to keep from overwhelming folks (email philr@stanford.edu ) Phil At 08:31 AM 11/2/2005, you wrote: >Hi, >Sorry I meant to say the swastika was on the front of >the little card type folder. Sorry, don't see a connection. Our Abraham was born 1749 and died 1821. He had a son Abraham (1787-1848) who had a son Abraham b. ca. 1821, but I don't see your Abraham among descendants or anywhere in my database. Anyone else have information for Jennifer? Hi, Sorry I meant to say the swastika was on the front of the little card type folder. It was probably the photographers own design at one time, anyway it's interesting. Yes the swastika wasn't always a symbol of evil. Webster's dictionary says it's FR, welfare, well, "A symbol or ornament in the form of a Greek cross with the ends of the arms bent at right angles. Very interesting on the Baughman's. My John Baughman (don't have his middle initial), was married to a Lucinda, they had Nancy, Benjamin, WILLIAM (my ggrandfather), Cynthia, Sarah and Andrew, not sure if they had more children. He is listed on the 1870 census, Morgan Co., Richland Twp Versalies MO as being 29 years old. On the 1880 census for Mill Creek, Morgan Co. MO, he's not listed but Lucinda is with all children. Could mine be the same John Madison Baughman? I will be very happy if he is.
