Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/1gC.2ACEB/610.5 Message Board Post: I have also been working on sorting out all of the Bachman/Baughman's from Westmoreland County. It seems as if the list of children for Henry and Catharine and John and Maria Barbara published by Humphrey for Montgomery County is not complete. John and Maria Barbara had one additional son, Jacob, not listed by Humphrey. I have not yet found the baptismal record for Jacob, but when his son, Johannes, is baptized at Harrold Zion Lutheran Church, May 14, 1809, listed as his sponsors are Johannes Bachman & Barbara (Grandparents). Jacob would have been born about 1776 which is still the time the family attended St. Paul's Church. I don't know if there was a transciption error from the original church records or if he was baptized at another church for some odd reason. Jacob appears in the same church as his brother, John, when he and the other siblings are confirmed. (I am a descendant of Jacob.) I have also found that John Bachman owned 70 acres of land in Marlborough Twp., Montogomery County, on which he paid taxes August 15, 1785. This information comes from Bean's History of Montgomery County, PA, Chapter LXI, p 956. I have not attempted to get a copy of any land records at this point. In 1796, John purchased land from John Kunkle on which he built his homestead. John is the brother of Catherine Kunkle, wife of Henry. As far as the information regarding Henry Bachman's marriage to Catherine Kunkle, this is found in Samuel T. Wiley, Chief Asst., Biographical & Historical Cyclopedia of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvannia. John M Gresham & Co: Philadelphia, 1890, 287-288, Excerpt from biography on Henry Croushore. I have not had the opportunity to check other chuches in the Montgomery County area for a record of their marriage. According to James Erwin Kunkle's "Kunkel Families From Germany" Henry was born about 1742 in Germany and came to Pennsylvania about age four years old. I have recently done a DAR patriot search in which Henry Bowman (sic) is listed as being born in Germany, married to Catharine Kunkle and the birthdates being correct. I have not sent for the complete record yet. Henry and Catharine Bachman of North Huntingdon, Westmoreland Co, PA had a son referred to as Adam. He is named repeatedly in "The Will of Henry Baughman" (Abt. 1742-1816) Source: Will Book 1, #579, pp. 396-97, Register of Wills, Westmoreland Co, PA .... In the name of God Amen I Henry Baughman of North Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County & Commonwealth of Pennsylvania... *First I give and bequeath to Catharine, my dearly beloved wife... among my four Daughters to wit first Margaret now the wife of Peter Straw for her own use and support during her life and what shall remain after her decease the said Margaret shall be equally divided among her three Sisters hereafter mentioned their heirs or assigns forever. *As to my son John, he being already very well provided for & in good circumstances, I give unto him the sum of two dollars. *As to my Son Adam, he being already very well provided for and in good circumstances, I give unto him the sum of two dollars. *As to my Son Peter, he being very well provided for and in good circumstances, I give unto him the sum of two dollars. *Also I give and bequeath to my beloved Daughter Mary, now the wife of Peter Straw, the sum of two hundred and sixty eight dollars to be paid by my Son Adam, ... *Also I give to my well beloved Daughter Barbara, now the wife of Michael Isaman (sic), the sum of two hundred and sixty eight dollars to be paid by my son Adam, ... *Also I give my well beloved Daughter Sara, now the wife of Adam Leonhart (sic), the sum of two hundred & sixty eight dollars to be paid by my son Adam, ... *And I do hereby ordain and appoint Adam Baughman, my son, & Peter Baughman, my Son, the Executors of this my last will & testament ...In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this fifth day of October in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred & fourteen. In German Henry Baughman Signed, sealed, published and declared by the said Henry Baughman as his last will and testament in presents (sic) of us John Peter Miller, Peter Rauck [Rugh] Jacob Smith. Westmoreland County S.S. In addition, in the History of the County of Westmoreland, Pennsylvania by George Dallas Albert, 1882, there is family a biography on Jacob Baughman, p 668, that describes the family. It references Henry and Catharine's emigration and settling in the "Blue Ridge" region of Pa, thirty miles from Lancaster City. It goes on to state that Adam Baughman settled on a farm in Armstrong county until the death of his brother Henry at which time he returned to Westmoreland County. It states that 4 of his children were born in Armstrong County. As with the Jacob, John and Maria Barbara's son, I have not been able to definitively locate Adam's baptism. It seems odd that both would not have been baptised at the same location as their siblings. It would be invaluable to be able to check the original records for transcription errors or missing pages etc. John and Maria Barbara also had a daughter, Elisabeth Barbara, born after 1782, that is also not listed in the Montgomery County births. This is also documented by her child's baptism in the German Church Records by Paul Miller Ruff.

I have a great great grandfather named Henry Bauchman b. in 1804 in Westmoreland Co. PA. He married a woman named Catherine. I wonder if this is the same Henry you show in your descendency chart. He was the son of Johan Adam Bachman and Margaret Miller? according to your chart. This would be great as I can get no further back than this person. I descend from him through Thomas Baughman, his son b. in PA and migrated to Indiana and marr Mary Susan Jones. Their son, Walter Garrett Baughman is my great grandfather. I'm sorry I don't know anything about your other line. You may email me at christiloes@sbcglobal.net

Shirley, I too have been working on these two family lines for quite a while. I have posted my information at http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=jlm524 I have been pretty fortunate to be able to document quite a few of their descendants from the German Church Records, wills, etc. I noted in your response you referred to John and Henry as brothers. I have suspected this for a while but have not found tangible proof of this or their parents. Would you be able to share with me how this was proved and their parents if known? In early tax records for Westmoreland County, there is also a George Baughman, Sr. and George Baughman, Jr. He first appears in 1791 and disappears in 1810. I have also wondered if this was a brother or cousin to John and Henry. Any information is greatly appreciated. -----Original Message----- From: baughman-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:baughman-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of miller1234@zoominternet.net Sent: Friday, October 13, 2006 7:44 PM To: BAUGHMAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BAUGHMAN] Bachman/Baughman of Westmoreland County, PA This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. It is of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County, Pa which was Philadelphia County at the time until about the middle of the1780's. All of brothers John and Henry Bachman's children's births and baptisms are in this church record. The problem for all of us is that some of these children were grown and married and were having children of their own when they moved to Westmoreland County, and many of them were named John and Henry with sons named Adam , John, Henry etc . The old German naming patterns are a ball of snakes to sort out and it's easy to leap past a generation in order to fill in a blank. It is my view that all Westmoreland County, PA Baughmans descend from these two Philadelphia/Montgomery County brothers. I need to purchase all of Rev. Ruff's Brush Creek Church records(and others) to try to trace Henry's descendants too as they appear t! o have lived in other townships besides Hempfield. I think you will find the cd very informative so email me to tell me where to send it. Hi - I'm coming into all of this really late. Would anyone be able to tell me if this information could be part of my family? I have a Samuel/Samual Baughman that was born April 6, 1833/34 in maybe OH. He died Dec 28, 1869 from a stroke and is buried in Eberhard Cemetery, Peabody, Washington Twp., Whitley Co., IN. He married Emily Vance. 1880 Census listed the following children: George Bachman 7-yrs, born Washington Twp, Whitley Co, IN; Sarah C. Bachman 5 yrs, born the same as George; and Marietta Bachman 2-yrs, born same as other children. Other children that had not been born at the time of this census were: Amanda, Margaret and William. I am a descendent of William.
