    1. [BAUER] SUNDAY AFTERNOON TEA - Part 2
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. ) ( ) The coffee and tea _.-~~-. are still hot, the (@\'--'/. scones and crumpets ('``.__.'`) still tasty! `..____.' PROJECTS WE'RE CURRENTLY WORKING ON [Due to our preparations for the move from GeoCities and the site fight happening at the same time, our projects got put on a back burner and we're just this past week bringing them back to the forefront.] One of the hardest things in genealogy is "the wait." We wait for the mailman, we wait for an inline cousin to join us in the family, we wait for news that will break down our brick walls. On an email list, you avidly scan each message hoping your "break" will be inside - or at least a hint to get you back on research road. It doesn't come....it doesn't come.... it just doesn't show up! Meanwhile, you've begun to lose hope that you're ever going to find anything. Not only are you discouraged, but now you're bored reading about everyone else's lines with nothing on yours. You end up leaving without the information you originally joined to get, risking that n-th of a chance that an inline cousin will join right after you've unsubscribed. You're not alone! My Bower[s] line has been stuck in New York for YEARS ....and yes, even I get discouraged sometimes. However, we're different from other email lists here in the family. Instead of having to just sit and watch messages with no information of interest to you pass over your screen day after day, we work on family- related projects that not only help pass your waiting time, but also help someone else too. The "wait" is much easier and your interest in the surname remains alive. You get a sense of accomplishment at completing the project and from helping another cousin. You also get a deeper sense of "belonging" in the family. It's true! There is something else to consider here....if you work on a project which ultimately in the end helps a newbie reach the same point in his/her research that you're at right now, you may well find that you've helped an inline cousin who has additional information that will help YOU! It comes back to the old adage, "What goes around, comes around." So, as you read our current projects, please plan to join us in one [or even two, if you'd like]: THE CONTINUUM With so many new sites coming online every day, this vital project was created as an avenue to expedite our web searches and bring locality- specific Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur, etc. data we might need under one roof. We currently have one country and eight states currently represented ~~ Australia, California, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. We'd like you to join us, build an online Continuum site, and aid in our efforts to get all those [for instance] Iowa Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur family sites that are already online linked from one site rather than having to use a generalized search engine like Netscape, HotBot or InfoSeek to search them out. Sites in this project parallel those of the GenWeb but center on Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur, etc. material only. [By the way, I've yet to mention this but the .etc part whenever I put the surnames inline? ....that .etc identifies the 81 variations of Bower and Bauer, our root surnames. The complete list of variants can be found at the Homestead off the main hallway.] Continuum sites can be as simple as state/country information and links to material in that region or, if the host elects, can add raw material to his/her site. Continuum hosts join a private email list set aside specifically for this project to discuss design ideas, project problems, and pass along helps to each other regarding the Continuum. In this way, there is always immediate help. To get an idea of what I'm talking about here, following are the URLs to two Continuum sites ~~ Rob Bower's Ohio Page ~ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rbower Mark Middleton's Illinois Page ~ http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Grove/8230 You'll have to learn at least some HTML [the coding language to put pages online] if you don't already know it. With exception of three things, your creativity is your own. If you think you might be interested in being a host for a Continuum site, please contact me at <ladyaudris@earthlink.net>. LOOKUP PROJECT ~~ This one is trying to get off the drafting board, but it's going to be another big plus for the family and any cousins who surf in to visit us. It will be set up at our [currently back on the draftboard] sister site, the Bower Cottage. The Lookup Project volunteers have small libraries in their homes or have access to research facilities. Lookup volunteers join a private email list set aside specifically for this project to discuss planning ideas, potential project problems, and general project discussion. This list may fold once the project comes into operation, however that has yet to be decided by the current project panel. If you'd like to be a Lookup volunteer, I'll be asking for them once I get the Cottage online and the project in place. Y2K Project This project is a time-capsule of sorts and is an ongoing effort only for this year. It's on display in the attic at the Homestead. We are looking for ALL Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur, etc. people who were alive to ring in the 1899/1900 New Year. It doesn't matter whether or not they were your people, how old they were, where they were living, whether or not they were even at home, or in a different state or country, single or married makes no difference. All that matters is that they were alive that particular New Year. The people don't even have to have been your relatives. You'll see the format we're looking for once you've been to see the project. In addition, a contact name if you can provide more information, or the source of your info is required. As you find Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur, etc. ancestors who lived to see 1 January 1900 roll in, please send their information to me at <ladyaudris@earthlink.net> so I can enter it into our database. If we continue to work at it all year, this is going to be a wonderful tool that will help us all a lot. GEDCOM PROJECT This project is going to be unbelievable! It's also trying to come off a back burner after a full year; but slowly we're getting there. This will be housed at the Cottage. We are going to take our GEDCOMs and put them online. The prime requirement here is NO living people are to be included. I'd planned to merge the files using the Personal Ancestral File [PAF], a program I've been using since the early days of computer genealogy [with updated versions, of course :) ]. I've already received several cousin's GEDCOMS and now find that PAF doesn't recognize other program's note tags. This is going to be a problem. If necessary, I'll change to a program more compatible with everyone else's. INDIVIDUAL LOOKUPS This isn't really a project, but a request from all of you. When you go to a research facility and scan a book or a film with the intention of extracting all the [for instance] Bowers, won't you please also go a step further and extract the Bauer, Baur, Bower, etc. spellings as well? We have cousins with us who, for one reason or another are not able to avail themselves of research facilities. Online resources are their only link to research. When you extract the data, and notify the family about it, most times I will contact you to see about housing it at the Homestead permanently with you credited as the submitter. THE RETREAT You've seen the first message come out this week about our newest project, the Retreat at <MyFamily.com>. There, we can all talk to each online other without having to download chat programs. We can talk about genealogy, get answers to questions, or just visit with each other in live discussion. Also at the Retreat, we will be placing pictures of ourselves. [It's always nice to be able to put a face to a name.] This is yet another way of bringing our family even closer together. Access to the Retreat is private and by invitation only. Those invitations will be sent only to cousins who express an interest in participating. A message will come out this week giving more information on where to send your notice. We still need two BAUER researchers to function as administrators in the chatroom. The only requirements for this project are that you have at least one year genealogical research experience [to be able to answer a newbie's questions] and that you are able to spend at least one hour a week in the chatroom to moderate any discussion. If you're interested, please contact me directly at <ladyaudris@earthlink.net>. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Two annual events occur in this family. They are discussed below: FAMILY REUNION Our BOWER-L and the Bower Family Homestead came online August 5th, 1998. To celebrate our coming together as a family, we held a cyberspace reunion at the Cottage. It was a potluck affair, with quite a few cousins supplying the "food". We will be holding another online reunion this year on August 5th. The "potluck dishes" are files that will ultimately be housed at the Homestead or Cottage, depending on what they are. The files can be extracted county/state censuses [variants included], deeds, wills, biographies with pictures, generation pedigrees, marriage records of a given county/state - just anything. They are NOT sent to your list, but directly to me for the family to "feed" on at the reunion. Reminders about the upcoming reunion will come out in the Sunday Coffees beginning the middle of May or beginning of June. FAMILY CHRISTMAS We are a family and we celebrate Christmas together. We give gifts to the family. Gifts are files of information, the same as those potluck dishes at the reunion. Again like the reunion, gifts are sent directly to me for "wrapping" [preparing for online] and placing under the tree to be opened on Christmas Day. Last Christmas we had a bingo through one of the gifts. Two cousins discovered each other and that made a happy Christmas for all of us. Reminders about Christmas start coming out the end of October. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Other projects are on tap as well, however, they haven't been started yet. To get an idea of what else is in store for this year, please visit the Homestead's bulletin board [near the bottom of the main hallway]. There you'll find a link to "Plans and Proposals". I hope I've covered everything! :) If you've made it this far without falling asleep, then I thank you for reading it all. My attempts to get you filled-in have not gone to waste. I wish you and your family a happy and blessed Easter. Colleen

    1. [BAUER] SUNDAY AFTERNOON TEA - Part 1

    3. ) ( ) Good Afternoon Family! .-.,--^--. ( Come on in. . . \\|`----'| - The coffee pot's on. . . \| |// ...and we even have decaf, | |/ tea, and crumpets! \ / ------ Today's topics include: 1. Who I am 2. How I operate the lists 3. List guidelines 4. CHAT: forum 5. Sunday Morning Coffee 6. The Bower Family Homestead 7. Projects we're currently working on [This will be in a 2nd message] WHO I AM You all already know who I am .... but I didn't get to introduce myself properly to you, and I'd like to do so here. My name is Colleen Pustola [2-l's and 2-e's in Colleen, please] and I'm an Army wife who has recently returned to the States after our fourth tour in Germany. I'm the mother of five with three still at home. My pseudonym, Lady Audris, comes from one of my former obsessions :) as a living historian/teacher of the medieval period. I've been researching my lines for nearly 25 years, teaching this science for 18, and guest-speaking at genealogical seminars and in schools for 13. Though I'm not Mormon, I did receive the bulk of my formal training from them so reciprocate by volunteering in their Family History Centers whenever we live near one. I've published my first book, the "Bower/Winchcomb Connection" and am working on six others including an update of the first. You now know my whole life in a nutshell! :) HOW I OPERATE THE LISTS In today's Coffee, you read "family" and "cousin[s]" all through it. That's because you have not joined an email list, but an online family. We are not "members of the list," we are cousins to each other. We may not be related by blood, but by coming together as one unit...we are a family. We respect each other and each other's abilities. Sharing and working together we'll break through these brick walls we've all been facing. Sharing and working together, we're also bound to develop a closeness to one another -- just like a family. I like that, many of the cousins like it, and I hope you do, too. I don't like dictatorial listowners! They make me nervous and afraid to post! So, I guess you could say I'm rather laid-back. Also, I can't see being stuck at a brick wall, joining a list for x-number of months, and reading one message after another day after day.....and going nowhere. I've done that too many times. Frankly, it's boring; I tune out on the list and pretty soon, drop it. I decided that when I grew up and became a listowner [after 6 years on email lists] that the list would not be "mine", but "ours" -- our homesite would not be "mine", but "ours." Why? You who are reading this have as much a vested interest in this family [this list] and our home as I do. That's why, when you read about our move from GeoCities to Crosswinds, you also read that the family took a vote on what we would do [move or stay]. I will not arbitrarily move your material away from the address you expect it to be at, nor will I ever take credit for any data you elect to house there. LIST GUIDELINES I don't push "format this way" and "post only these items". We have three goals to achieve: 1. Enjoy ourselves! 2. Find our ancestral lines and inline cousins. 3. Get as much data online as possible to accomplish the first two! We do, however, have some guidelines that we follow in order to maintain a happy medium for everyone: 1. NEVER flame [verbally attack] anyone in the family. The penalty for this is instant removal from the list. If you have a problem with one of the cousins, do not post what you think about them. That's what I'm here for. There is never a justification to say hateful words and hurt someone. Hurt feelings get nobody anywhere and can make the entire group feel uneasy and unhappy. 2. Newbies to genealogy are very special to us. We treat them with much kindness as they struggle to learn the where's and how's of not only how to research, but how to participate in a discussion list without feeling afraid, intimidated, or demeaned. 3. Criticism is always gentle and constructive. We all make mistakes [I make them all the time!], and we need to remember that maybe not everyone is having as great a day as you are. If someone makes a mistake on something, go to their rescue and show him/her how to do it, if you know how. 4. Always show compassion towards a cousin who is having trouble with something. But first, always ask if he/she would like for you to help them learn. Please remember not to write any cousin and deliberately point out how many mistakes they have made. This would be outright rude, and we're all above that. That person might be having a rough day with mistakes spilling out every time they try to do something. 5. When you post messages to the family, please always use a helpful subject line like "John BAUER d. 1800 MI," rather than a generic one like "inquiry about my family line." 6. Your messages through RootsWeb must always be in text format. If you try to use HTML or MIME formats or try to send an attachment with your message. The RootsWeb server will simply kick your message out and bounce it to me as an error. That's it. No harrassing "form your messages this and such way." No "you will...." Post anything you desire provided it's about Bower[s]/Bauer, etc. genealogy and ancestral material. Off-topic items and discussion will be covered in a later section here. CHAT: FORUM There are times when you have something to say that's not on-topic for the list, but you think the family should know it. You have two choices here: you can either send it to me to be related to everyone in the Sunday Coffee or you can use the CHAT: format. There are two rules to using CHAT: 1. You _must_ start your subject line with CHAT: 2. Absolutely NO genealogy is to be put in CHAT: messages because not everyone in the family wants to read CHAT: forum messages. Those people know to simply delete messages with CHAT: in the subject line. CHAT: format messages are not an everyday occurrence. They happen here and there. The only, and longest, time the CHAT: forum is actively open is the period starting Thanksgiving day through to January 2nd so everyone can post holiday messages, recipes, traditions, etc. After that, the CHAT: forum closes and resumes its normal inactivity. SUNDAY MORNING COFFEE Just as this morning, you should expect me to 'join' you for Coffee [the real thing, as I drink LOTS of it! :) ] We have a Coffee every Sunday morning and in it you'll always find a welcome to our newest cousins. Once you've received two or three Coffees, you pretty much know what's in that paragraph and will skip over it. The rest of the Coffee can cover just about anything to do with general genealogy, news about our homesite or updates on projects that the family is working on. Also at a Coffee will be news about cousins -- tragedies and elevated highs. Coffees are never put in the CHAT: format simply because everyone is expected to read them to find out what's happening with us as a family. THE BOWER FAMILY HOMESTEAD This is our homesite and where we house all our material. Its informal name is the Homestead. Our site is known throughout the web and receives quite a bit of traffic. In just under two years we have had over 33,000 hits - a phenomenal number for a surname study site. The Homestead has data on just about all 81 variant spellings we research. If you'd like to display pictures, a genealogy, wills, deeds, passengers lists, etc. you are certainly welcome to. It gets your material online for the world to see and hopefully for an inline cousin to see and contact you through. Just contact me at <ladyaudris@earthlink.net>, let me know what you'd like to do and we can set something up. You should know also that, for your safety and that of your relatives, we do not display any data of living people [other than your name and contact email address as submitter of the material]. A small piece of news you should know -- our site just recently won a site fight - not once did we win, but twice - and the second time against just first place winners. The family came together and worked very hard getting everything ready for that competition. Believe it or not, we actually swept the board, surprising all of us. The Homestead will be going up for its final round in the yearly competition in December and small plans have already begun to improve what we just finished creating! :) You are certainly welcome to make suggestions on improvements to our [now yours, too] homesite. A brief explanation of two of the Homestead's rooms -- The parlor is used for introducing our ancestors that lived 1790 or earlier while the dining room is for those 1790 and after. To introduce an ancestor you can either do a narrative-style or use any format you'd like. You can do a single generation or ten - with pictures or without. The entire introduction is up to you. The only requirement to introductions is that no living people are in it. To save me time, I'd also appreciate it if you would get it as close to camera-ready as possible, but that isn't a requirement. There is no way for anyone to upload any material to the Homestead. All data has to be sent to me where I'll set it up for display online. I will almost always contact you after I have it online, to get your final approval on it before I announce its display to the family. PROJECTS WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON - see the 2nd message ****We now break for an unscheduled intermission****

    3. ) ( ) Good Morning Family! .-.,--^--. ( Come on in. . . \\|`----'| - The coffee pot's on. . . \| |// ...and we even have decaf, | |/ tea, and hot chocolate! \ / ------ Happy Easter everyone! Today's, and all future Coffees, will be going to three research groups - the BOWER-L, BAUER-L and BOWERS-L. Today's Coffee may seem like it's bouncing around and more wordy than normal. For that I apologize in advance, but I need to direct everything to the right group. Next week's Coffee will resume its normal length and format. Today's topics include: 1. Welcome to new cousins 2. Homestead moved! **PLEASE BE SURE TO READ** 3. Addition of two lists 4. Roll Call **STARTS TODAY** 5. Sunday Afternoon Tea - **ONE TIME ONLY** 6. Cousin News If you've been with the family [the BOWER-L list] for at least three weeks, you'll probably want to skip the following paragraphÂ… TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur lines or any of the variant spellings that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. If you haven't visited the homesite of this list yet, you are encouraged to do so. The Bower Family Homestead [a.k.a., the Homestead] is our homesite and the gathering place for much of our information. It waits to join us all in welcoming you into the family at <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowerhomestead>. HOMESTEAD MOVED! It's done.....finally done! Consider us moved into our new home! :) To you new cousins, this won't mean a whole lot and may be repetitious from the last paragraph. However, those cousins who have been with the family for several months or years do not read the welcome paragraph, hence the explanation here. Our home at GeoCities is now closed down. If you forget and use your old bookmarks, you'll see the forwarding page with a link near the bottom to take you to our home at Crosswinds. To write it down now, the URL is <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowerhomestead>. Please do not use the shortcut right now as I haven't updated it yet to take you to Crosswinds. FOR OUR NEWEST COUSINS: We moved our home because of GeoCities carrying out Terms of Service sweeps without any warning. They closed down hundreds of sites without notice to the webmasters and many, many people no longer had access to their material. The family took a vote and decided we should get out of GeoCities as soon as possible to prevent the loss of our own data. I'll explain all this family and voting business at the Tea this afternoon - more on the Tea further into the Coffee. ADDITION OF TWO LISTS This paragraph is primarily to the cousins on the BOWER-L, though it affects everyone on the BOWERS-L and BAUER-L, too. We did not merge as I'd told you we would. The RootsWeb administrators could not agree on their merging policy and I/we were being bounced back and forth. I could not see us all being part of a tug-of-war so halted the merge. I sent messages to both the BAUER-L and BOWERS-L earlier this week notifying everyone of the halt, letting everyone know they were still on their original lists providing they hadn't unsubbed. So, we do not have the 140+ increase in cousins on the BOWER-L that I told you to expect by the end of this week. Instead, we are one family in three groups. I equate our situation to a parent with two children, both of whom have grown and moved out. They are still a family, just not in the same house; and they still communicate with each other as a family. Because of its size and its nature of the variant spellings, the BOWER-L is the parent group. To make sure we have free-flowing information across the family, all messages on the BOWER-L that deal with BOWERS and BAUER will be cross-posted to its respective group. Likewise, all messages will be forwarded to the BOWER-L. If someone can think of a better way to get the information to the entire family, please let me know; I'm certainly open to ideas. [There are no listowner settings at RootsWeb to accomplish an automatic cross-posting.] We CAN make this work, cousins. All we have to do is keep working together. I'll give you ALL the best coordinating efforts I can to keep the information flowing, I promise you that. We are a family of almost 500 now, so things make take a little longer than they already to do get accomplished, but like I said, I'll do my very best for you. ROLL CALL This is going to be my first heavy-duty cross-posting, but yes - we are still going to have a roll call, beginning today. We need to find out what everyone knows about their lines across the three groups and this is the only way we're going to be able to do it. TO THE NEW BOWER-L COUSINS, THE BAUER-L and BOWERS-L COUSINS -- A roll call means that everyone in the family should now post their Bower[s]/Bauer families to the list so everyone else can see them. There is no format you have to follow. Just please, do not type your messages in all capital letters as they are very hard to read. Also, please remember to put in dates and cities/towns/counties with their states or countries [if not U.S.]. Not all of us know where [for example] Oscoda County is <VBG>. To those cousins who are new to discussion lists, the traffic will get very heavy for a few days during the roll call, then will slow back down to normal. Please stay with us! The few days of extra traffic will NOT last and YOU WILL SURVIVE THIS!! :) Besides, this is your chance to find out if you have direct line family already with us. Start your subject line with ROLL CALL: then add your family or person[s] you're looking for. By the time you read this I will already have my roll call message out on every list simply so you can see how it's done. To those of you who have been with the BOWER-L since the beginning, please post too. With so many new eyes to view your data, this is one time you _really_ don't want to skip. Our last roll call brought four bingos. Will you get one this time? I hope so. [I will extract this portion of the Coffee and paste it to a separate message to make sure those people who don't read the Coffee get this piece of news.] SUNDAY AFTERNOON TEA These paragraphs will be for all the new BOWER-L cousins and those cousins on the BAUER-L and BOWERS-L. I don't normally have a Sunday Afternoon Tea. I'll hold one today simply because those of you on the BOWERS-L and BAUER-L did not get welcome messages from me. This afternoon's Tea will let you know who I am and how I operate the lists. You'll get the guidelines, find out what projects we are working on, and learn about our two big, annual events. In other words, although it will be rather long [there may have to be two parts], you won't want to skip over the Tea when it comes out. :) The heading of the Tea will be much like you see for the Coffee so you won't miss it. COUSIN NEWS Gloria Motter [jgmott@wcoil.com]is home recovering after surgery and some very unpleasant news - she was diagnosed with breast cancer. On the good side though, the doctor has told her they caught it early and she should be fine. That I know of at this point, Gloria has not begun her treatments and is still awaiting other test results. I'm sure she would appreciate your prayers and hearing words of support from all of you. Family....it's what we're all about. I really enjoyed this time with you. It was so nice. I hope your upcoming week is filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'

    1. [BAUER] CHAT: NEW! THE RETREAT
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi cousins, Vicky Bowers-Gieslau and I have been coordinating efforts all week long to open a secure family site at <myfamily.com> where we can have chats [genealogical or just fun] and display pictures of ourselves that we were talking about several weeks ago. There are a lot of nooks and crannies at myfamily.com where we can do quite a bit. Vicky has done a lot of work on the site and is chairing this entire effort, at the beginning anyway. She is going to train a small group of cousins to be administrators for the site and, from there, those administrators will help train the rest of the family. Particularly for benefit of our newbies, the administrative team will consist of two cousins representing each of the prime surnames being researched in our family -- two each of Bauer, Bower, Bowers cousins -- for a total of six site administrators. We have both Bower representatives. Still needed are: 1 Bowers researcher from the BOWERS-L 1 Bauer researcher from the BAUER-L 1 Bauer researcher rom the BOWER-L Vicky will represent the Bowers surname from the BOWER-L. Rob Bower and I will represent the Bower surname. Admin training starts on Monday, the 24th, at 9:00a.m. PST - so, wherever you're at you'll need to gauge the time from there. It may last about four days - 1 hour a session - and perhaps not even that long. The next 2-3 days admins will spend sending out invitations and getting those who are interested enrolled into the site in time for our first chat. At this point our first, full-family gabfest is scheduled for Sunday, April 30th at 1:00 p.m. PST. Vicky will head that first one. Since myfamily.com is a private site, membership is by invitation only. That means all the administrators will: 1.) have to send invitations to those cousins who are interested, then manually enroll those cousins who want to be a part of the chat group, or even simply to access our area. 2.) oversee the chat sessions, holding a scheduled one at least once a week or whenever they happen to see a group of cousins at the Retreat [our site's informal name]. 3.) need to have at least one year of genealogical research experience. The reason? To be able to help our newbies if they have questions. I'll send out more information next week for all the family to be able to enroll and get signed up for the Retreat, but for now we need to know who is able to help administrate. Are you interested? Please contact me as soon as possible as I need to pass the word on to Vicky. She will set up your logins and passwords, then send your invitations to you. Colleen

    1. [BAUER] CHANGE TWO...
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi everyone, Okay folks, here's the latest merge development -- I am being pulled here between two Rootsweb adminstrators. One says it's okay to merge the lists while another says "no, it isn't." In the meantime, you and I are all getting jerked around trying to figure out what's what. This was not supposed to become a tug of war with me or any of you caught in the middle! So, here's what I'm going to do -- Until the Rootsweb administrators figure out what the policy is and come to an agreement, I'm going to halt the merge and get us out of this. Both the lists are still intact, so......if you did not unsubscribe yourself from the BOWERS or BAUER list, then you're still on it your original list. [You can tell that you're still on your original list by looking at the From: portion in the top of this message.] I've reset both list's parameters so everything is back to the way it was. You are able to begin posting to each other again today. Instead now, you have the option of joining one, two or even all three lists. Also, if you joined the BOWER-L and wish to be only on your original list, you can unsub yourself or write to me privately and I'll do it manually for you. You should also realize that if you join just one list you stand the chance of missing material coming out on a second list unless we crosspost. I'll answer all your questions or address any concerns regarding this situation as best I can if you'll email me directly <ladyaudris@earthlink.net>. I apologize if you're totally confused now. I am too! But I have no doubt we'll get through this together with our heads above water. If any new developments come from Rootsweb, I'll let you know immediately. Thanks for your patience, everyone. Let's get these lists going strong and make some bingos! :-) Colleen

    1. [BAUER] FROM LISTOWNER - PLEASE READ
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi everyone, I neglected to tell you..... Both the lists are now considered as 'moderated' ...which means that anything you post will come directly to me and not to the list. I'm doing this to stop any flow of traffic on the two lists so we can get them all merged. If you want to post a message, please be sure you're signed onto the BOWER-L@rootsweb.com list [or the BOWER-D, if you prefer the digest]. I will alert the BOWER-L following this message that you're all coming onboard. Then, at the end of this week, we'll hold a roll call once I'm sure everyone has had a chance to read their email. If you're new to email lists or to genealogy, don't worry -- I'll explain what a roll call is when I post the message to have one. Also, I should have asked you all to send me a quick message letting me know which list you're coming off from -- there are 4 I need to watch for you all from: BAUER-L BAUER-D BOWERS-L BOWERS-D I'm watching your subscriptions coming in and have the rosters from all 4 lists. Please send me an email [ladyaudris@earthlink.net] and let me know which list you subscribed from so I can cross your name off and know you made it onboard. At the end of this week I'll manually unsubscribe everyone from their respective lists [of the 4 above] so we don't have any traffic mess-ups. If you've been a cousin on the BOWER-L and are subscribed to one of the above lists, I also need an email from you just to make sure you're covered. Thanks. Colleen Pustola Discussion Coordinator ladyaudris@earthlink.net

    1. [BAUER] FROM THE LISTOWNER - PLEASE READ!
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi everyone, I am the coordinator for the BOWER-L, BOWERS-L, and BAUER-L discussion lists. It was through a glitch at Rootsweb that I just found out about owning the BAUER-L [hence, the message that came out on the list two days ago re: who's the admin] and my luck to pick up BOWERS-L. Okay everyone, here's what I'd like to do -- Bauer and Bower are both root names for 81+ variant spellings, and both names are used interchangeably so much in legal documents that we all sometimes have a hard time trying to find our ancestors. The BOWER list has 294 cousins in its family; the BAUER list has 60; and the BOWERS list has 83. Some of you are subscribed to all three lists for fear of missing something. I certainly understand that! A lot of you are already in the family fold on the BOWER list. I'd like to merge all three lists together into the BOWER-L. The reasons for this is: 1.) The BOWER-L is much larger and has more traffic. Your opportunity for finding an inline cousin and/or ancestral data is greater. 2.) The traffic on the the BOWERS and BAUER lists is very small. However, the traffic on the BOWER list is just a little bit heavier, though not enough to strain anyone as far as loads of email goes. The only time this may be a problem is when we have a roll call, but then the traffic slows down considerably after a week. 3.) If I keep the lists separated, I'll spend much of my day cross-posting messages to make sure everyone gets the material. It's easier to set you all up on one list. If you are not already a member of the BOWER-L, will you please send a subscribe message to <BOWER-L-request@rootsweb.com> or, for the digest at <BOWER-D-request@rootsweb.com>. It will make merging much easier. If you have any questions, please send them directly to me at <ladyaudris@earthlink.net>. Thanks for your understanding. Colleen Pustola ladyaudris@earthlink.net

His father was Croft Ferdinand BAUER who married Mary C. LaRue. FamilySearch turned up another family called Croft BAUER who married Rachel Krause and had 11 children all born in Baden, Germany. This man is supposed to be Croft Ferdinand's father. He also is said to have been born 11 Oct 1851 in Richland Township, Marion, Ohio. I am interested in finding anyone who is working on this line of BAUERS in the Ohio area. Judy Gillon Norton, MA

    1. BOWER FAMILY HOMESTEAD
    2. A mom of five
    3. Hi all, I just wanted to tell you all about a site, Bower Family Homestead that has every type record of Bower[s] and Bauer-related data on it. I have been visiting there the past week and still haven't seen everything. It's the homesite of the BOWER-L@rootsweb.com discussion list and from what I see, they are a pretty active group. They apparently study all variations of the Bower name because a page is there with eighty versions of Bower that are researched by them. I have seen a lot of those names throughout the site. It's a very interesting area to visit and one I now have bookmarked. If you want to have a look, go to <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Park/4501>. 2. Just to let you all know if I haven't said already. There is no place on the form for a maiden name. I am the one that likes to streach the rules when needed anyway. I intend to add my maiden name to the census by putting maiden name/real name in the place where the last name goes. You know Jones/Smith. Ruth Ann
