    1. [BAUER] Adaline C. Bower m. Thomas Potter: Pennsylvania Biographical Sketches, 1868
    2. http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/4557.htm Database: Pennsylvania Biographical Sketches, 1868 Combined Matches: 1 Encyclopaedia of Contemporary Biography of Pennsylvania, Volume II Down in the text further it states: . Mr. Potter married, on October 2, 1845, Miss Adaline Coleman Bower, a granddaughter of General Jacob Bower, of Reading, Pennsylvania, a distinguished citizen of Philadelphia, banker, and founder of the great manufacturing establishment of Thomas Potter--now conducted under the style of Thomas Potter Sons & Co.--and prominent for many years in public affairs, was born in the County of Tyrone, Ireland, August 17, 1819, and died at Philadelphia, Sunday, September 29, 1878. "The family of Potter, formerly of Potterstown, County of Fermanagh, is descended from George Potter, an officer who accompanied the army of Cromwell from England, and was compensated for his services in reducing Ireland to the rule of the Commonwealth by extensive grants of lands in the County Fermanagh. The lands thus granted were formerly the property of the Lord Marquis, Chieftain of Fermanagh, who, for his complicity in what is known as 'the Great Rebellion of 1641,' was convicted of high treason, his estate being confiseated to the English Government. Under the Act of Settlement and Plantation of 1660 (time of Charles II.) as may be seen in the public records of Ireland, George Potter was confirmed in the possession of the lands of Oaghill, Mullinscarty, Garderghill, Tremern, and Cromey, all situated in the Barony of Maglierestepha, County of Fermanagh, which came thenceforward to be known and designated as Potterstown and Pottersrath. This property the Potter family continued to possess for many years until, as appears from a deed of conveyance now in the possession of the Right Honorable The Earl of Belmore, K. C. M. G., of Castlecool. County Fermanagh, Abraham Potter, son of the above-mentioned George Potter, disposed of the entire estate to James Corry, the son of a Scotch adventurer and the founder of the family of the present Earl of Belmore." This disposition of the paternal estates was the inevitable result of the heavy mortgages, which had been placed upon them in order to meet obligations caused by improvident living, consequent upon the prevailing habits of the landed people of the period. The Potter family, although their interests in the estates originally granted to their ancestor was thus severed, continued to reside in the county. No longer members of the great landed aristocracy they, nevertheless, occupied a good position. In the year 1791 James Potter, at that time the representative head of the family, who resided in Ramaley in the County of Fermanagh, became possessed of a property at Rilaghquiness in the County of Tyrone. On his death he was succeeded by his son, George Potter, who, having decided to settle in the United States, disposed of his property in Ireland, and left the county with his wife and three daughters and son Thomas, in the year 1828. George Potter arrived in Philadelphia with a moderate sum of money, in a few years was taken ill and died, leaving his family a small estate and limited means. His son Thomas had been desirious of entering the ministry and his parents were arranging to prepare him for college, but the death of his father caused him to forego this cherished hope, and forced him at once to maintain himself, as well as contribute to the support of his family. He learned the trade of manufacturing oil cloth with Isaac Macauley, proprietor of the Bush Hill Oil Cloth Establishment, the main building of which was the original manor house of James Hamilton, twice Colonial Governor of the Province of Pennsylvania. Appreciating, however, the importance of a thorough education, he devoted himself to diligent study at night under the tuition of his mother, and he acquired a broad and liberal framework of knowledge, the completeness and good purpose of which was shown in after life. While devoting his leisure hours to self-improvement and study, he gave such diligent and valuable attention to his business that in a few years he was made manager by Mr. Macauley. In 1838, though then but nineteen years of age, he founded the house of Thomas Potter--succeeded by Thomas Potter Sons & Co.--and shortly thereafter purchased from Isaac Macauley the Bush Hill Oil Cloth Establishment, in which he had served his apprenticeship. In 1870 he sold Bush Hill and purchased the ground and erected the extensive establishment at Second and Venango Streets, on the New York Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, since greatly enlarged, and where the business, still carried on by his sons, has so increased that it is now the most extensive of its kind in the United States. Mr. Potter married, on October 2, 1845, Miss Adaline Coleman Bower, a granddaughter of General Jacob Bower, of Reading, Pennsylvania, who served as an officer in the Continental Army from June, 1775, to the end of the struggle for Independence, in 1783, and was one of the founders of the Pennsylvania section of the Society (or Order) of the Cincinnati, and during the War of 1812 a Brigadier-General of Pennsylvania Militia. The children of this marriage were six sons and two daughters. Four of the sons survive and have succeeded to the business established by Mr. Potter, as noted above. Thomas Potter's civic life was marked by characteristic energy and he held many positions of trust and honor in the city of his adoption. A brief list of these will strongly exhibit the esteem with which he was regarded by his fellow-citizens. In 1853 he was elected a Commissioner. Three years later, after the consolidation, he was nominated by the Democratic party and elected to the City Councils and was immediately appointed to the Chairmanship of the Committee on Schools (having been also a School Controller and School Director). Two years later he allied himself with the Republican party, and was nominated and elected on that ticket to the Common Council in 1858. In 1859-'60-'61, he represented the People's party in the same body. During these years he was Chairman of the School Committee and a member of the Finance Committee, and he took an active and leading part in all municipal legislation. He was especially interested in the improvement of the Public School system, upon which subject he made several valuable reports, and was chiefly instrumental in organizing the paid Fire Department of Philadelphia. In 1861 he originated and carried through the ordinance for the appointment of a Commission to assist in supporting the families of volunteers in the Union Army from the city of Philadelphia. He not only gave this project his untiring attention, but tendered the use of his private office for the use of the Commission. In 1865 and 1866 he was again elected to Councils; was made Chairman of the Finance Committee and was instrumental in passing the bill which secured to the city the eastern portion of Fairmount Park. He was also active in passing the bill which required the City Treasurer to pay City Warrants according to date and number, which had the effect of bringing them to par and strengthened the credit of the city. The bill providing for the revising of the assessment of real estate also received his hearty and earnest support. Mr. Potter carried through Common Council a bill which, had it not been ultimately defeated, would have proved one of the most important ordinances ever passed in the city of Philadelphia: it was to provide for the passage of an Act of Assembly authorizing the public squares at Broad and Market Streets to be used for the erection of an Academy of Natural Sciences, an Academy of Fine Arts and other educational institutions. He had many opportunities of holding more ambitious offices and positions of public trust, but his chief pride lay in trying modestly but diligently to further the material interests of Philadelphia by every means in his power. Mr. Potter's intense devotion to his public duties and the demands of his private interests began to tell upon his strength, so that in 1868 he was obliged to resign his seat in Councils and travel in Europe, where he spent some time vainly seeking to recover the health which he had shattered chiefly in the service of his fellow-citizens. In 1871, after his return from Europe, he was elected President of the City National Bank of Philadelphia, and held that position until his death, which took place at his residence "The Evergreens," Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, Sunday, September 29, 1878. The value of his services to the bank can best be recorded by giving extracts from the minutes of the Board of Directors, and from the resolutions passed by the Philadelphia Clearing House Association Brenda K. This database is the third volume of claims to the House of Representatives in the early nineteenth century. It contains a variety of claims, including applications for pension benefits, compensation for services provided to the government, land, and change in pension benefits. Each entry provides the claimant's name, nature of the claim, and what action was taken by the House. In some entries, a residence is listed. Although most of the records are for claims in the first half of the nineteenth century, a few can be found from 1799. Including the names of nearly 20,700 men and women, this can be a useful source of information to researchers of early Americans. 2. Ryan's Heritage Notebook... A Family History Keepsake Rosalie Beauchamp of Naughton made a beautiful keepsake for her mother's eightieth birthday. Mary Anderson had always been keen on crossword puzzles. Rosalie created a crossword where all the clues were people or events in Mary's life. Once Mary had filled it in, Rosalie framed the completed puzzle, the clues and a picture of Mary as a little girl. The picture hung in Mary's bedroom for the rest of her life and can now be seen in her daughters' house. This is an original idea for a party activity (family members helped Mary fill in the puzzle). It also makes a keepsake which will give joy for many years. More at this site http://globalgazette.net/gazrt/gazrt48.htm = source site have fun brenda kingsley@aol.com Brenda K. 1. [BAUER] SUNDAY MORNING COFFEE
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. ) ( ) Good Morning Family! .-.,--^--. ( Come on in. . . \\|`----'| - The coffee pot's on. . . \| |// ...and we even have decaf, | |/ tea, and hot chocolate! \ / ------ Today's topics include: 1. Welcome to new cousins 2. Roll call 3. The Retreat 4. Help needed with computer language If you've been with the family [the BOWER-L list] for at least three weeks, you'll probably want to skip the following paragraph… TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur lines or any of the variant spellings that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. If you haven't visited the homesite of this list yet, you are encouraged to do so. The Bower Family Homestead [a.k.a., the Homestead] is our homesite and the gathering place for much of our information. It waits to join us all in welcoming you into the family at <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowerhomestead>. ROLL CALL Our first roll call was carried out rather smoothly and I noticed a lot of new information passing through. Did anyone make a BINGO [connect with another cousin]? If so, please tell us about it [using the CHAT: format]. This enmasse roll call for the family's three lists was a one-time only event simply to get everyone's data onto the table where we can all see it right away. However, in the future, roll calls will be staggered with one group holding one in one week, a second group the next, and so on. That way everyone won't be facing the massive amounts of e-mails we had this past week. I have to thank everyone for being so patient will all the e-mail. I'm sure some of you are still tunneling out from it all! :) There won't be another roll call for about three months. If, however, one group's growth exceeds 20 new cousins, that particular group will hold one right away. Just like this time, I'll manually forward messages so nobody will miss any important family data. Even without a roll call though, I'll still manually cross-post your messages. THE RETREAT Our new [and private] family center at myfamily.com officially opens today! Have you notified one of the administrators that you want to participate, received and returned your invitation? I hope so. Our first family chat is scheduled for 1 p.m. US PST [4 p.m. US EST]. It's going to be a real gabby group this afternoon and I look forward to meeting each of you 'live'! :) Vicky Bowers-Gieslau has been working very hard the last two weeks getting everything set up and the administrators trained. Vicky, we all thank you so much for giving all your time toward making this area such a nice one for us. Your efforts are going to be extremely appreciated! :) I know we don't REALLY need them....we being who we are and all - but two guidelines have been instituted that everyone should know before going to the Retreat's chatroom: 1. No profanity or lewdness. After all, we are Bower/Bauer descendants and we're all above that anyway. :) 2. Please, no discussions about race, religion or politics. The only thing any of those subjects cause is arguments which lead to anger and hurt feelings -- and we're above that as well. The chatroom is NOT for genealogical discussion only. You can talk about your dog, your funny-looking toes, the broken branch on the tree in your backyard... just anything! The Retreat and our chatroom are giving us the opportunity to get to know each other personally and bring our family even closer together than we already are. Of course, if you WANT to discuss genealogy, I'm sure nobody will mind..... :) HELP NEEDED WITH COMPUTER LANGUAGE The search engine in the hallway at the Homestead is throwing script errors to those cousins using Internet Explorer. Will one of you who is super-brilliant in computer language please contact me and let me know what a Code "0", "Unterminated string constant" error is and how to fix it? I think I could probably make the repair if I just knew what the error meant. To you May babies - the cousins and I wish you a very happy and exciting year ahead. Happy Birthday! You are loved! Family....it's what we're all about. I really enjoyed this time with you. I hope your upcoming week is filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. 1. [BAUER] ANNOUNCEMENT: NARA PRICE INCREASES BEING PROPOSED
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. The NARA proposal to revamp the system and fees for providing copies of Military Service Records, Bounty-Land Warrant Applications Files, and Pension Application Files has been published in the 25 April 2000 issue of the Federal Register. Public comment is invited and should be directed to NARA Regulation Comment Desk 8601 Adelphi Road College Park, MD 20740-6001 Fax: 301 713-7270 The proposed Reproduction Fee Schedule covers a number of items, but the Military Service Records, and the Pension and Bounty-Land Warrants are of the greatest concern to genealogists. NARA proposes three major changes: 1. The NATF Form 80 would be discontinued, to be replaced by two new forms: NATF Form 85 to request both Bounty-Land Warrant application files and Pension files (more than 75 years old), and NATF From 86 to request Military Service Records (more than 75 years old). 2. For all three types of files, NARA would no longer send a selection of pages, but would send the complete file. This would eliminate the two-step process currently used and should be beneficial to most genealogists. 3. The fees for all three types of files would be raised. For Military Service Records the new fee would be $17.00, regardless of the number of pages included in the file. For Bounty-land Warrants the fee would be $17.25, again without regard to the number of pages. For Pension Files the fee would be $40.00, regardless of the number of pages. If approved, the proposal would go into effect on 1 September 2000. Many genealogists may consider the proposed fees excessive. NARA specifically invites comment on the proposed fee schedule. The FGS/NGS Records Preservation and Access Committee urges everyone who wants to comment to carefully read the full proposal before submitting comments. The proposed fees are intended to cover the actual cost of locating, copying and mailing the records, plus 10% as authorized by law, and are based on the average size of the files. NARA states that the average for Military Service Records and Bounty-land Applications is somewhere under 20 pages, while the average for full Pension Files is 105 pages. The FGS/NGS Records Preservation and Access Committee will be looking at the NARA proposal carefully, and will submit comments as appropriate. Individuals who would like to provide input to the Committee's evaluation are welcome to do so but are also encouraged to comment direct to NARA at the address given above. Comments for Committee consideration should be e-mailed to fgs-access@fgs.org, or mailed to Federation of Genealogical Societies, Attention: RPAC, PO Box 200940, Austin, TX 78720-0940. In order for the Records Preservation and Access Committee to adequately evaluate such input it must be received by 26 May 2000. The deadline for comment to NARA, however, is still 26 June 2000.

But.. it is less than traveling to VT (if you are not there) And I know there is one gal on here researching Vermont but do not have her email address. So sending it this way.......The choice is yours to use or not~ Please forgive me.. if there is any rule about advertising of sorts. <a href="mailto:"kingsley@aol.com">Brenda</a> I am in the process of indexing the marriage and death notices from the Vermont Chronicle Newspaper, a newspaper that was published between 1826 and 1895. The notices cover Vermont state wide (not all-inclusive, some marriages and deaths are not posted here). There are also notices from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, New York, Louisiana, Canada and many other places as well - some of the out-of-state notices mention the part of Vermont that person hailed from. Currently I have the indexes for the first 20 years, 1826 to 1845, online. The notices are not obituaries (with the exception of a few more prominent people of the times) and can give very little information. Sometimes, however, one can be lucky enough to get little bits that would be helpful to a genealogist. The indexes to the notices are posted on the Internet. I am offering copies of the notices for a small fee, the cost and ordering instructions are attached as a link to each index page. If you have ancestors from Vermont, or who may have come from the northeast, you may find this site helpful.
