Hi family, One of our cousins, Jerry Bennett <drcleeb@webtv.net>, gave me a wonderful idea yesterday without realizing it. Thanks to Jerry we now have a queries forum at the Cottage. Want to place a query -- and DO IT YOURSELF? .... NO WAITING for Colleen to upload the queries? .... place one at the Cottage! Simply go to the Cottage <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowercottage> and enter the door. Inside, scroll down till you see the shells. Click on the shell linked to "place a query." You'll be taken to the forum .... it's just that simple! If this works out well, we might want to consider placing the same thing at the Homestead at the beginning of next year. But, we have time to decide on that. In the meantime, you can all begin entering your queries. Please though, DO NOT enter those queries all in capital letters! Instead, please use upper/lower case. Enjoy! :) Colleen

Hi family, The moment has arrived .... Bower Cottage .... We're going to go ahead and open our new sister site today, however there are a few things you should know before seeing it ~~ 1. The site isn't finished. When you go onto the balcony two links will throw "oops, not found" pages at you -- those for the novice/advanced researchers and the poetry. Also, the last six links for the beginners will not work, either. I'll fix those later tonight. 2. There is NO data on the site yet. But then, how could there be? .... we haven't moved in to the Cottage yet! :) Other than the above, I believe we're pretty well set. The search engine will work, however you won't find any names. I won't upload or work behind the scenes for the next five hours so you should all be able to walk around, look and test things with no problems. The URL for our new sister site is <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowercottage> or, the shortcut - <http://embark.to/bowercottage>. Comments, suggestions, etc. - good or bad (this is YOUR site too, afterall) - will be appreciated. I've already been asked to enlarge the "enter through the door" instruction on the front page. This will be taken care of tonight or tomorrow. I hope you're all having a sunny, super Sunday! Enjoy! Colleen
) ( ) Good Morning Family! .-.,--^--. ( Come on in. . . \\|`----'| - The coffee pot's on. . . \| |// ...and we even have decaf, | |/ tea, and hot chocolate! \ / ------ Today's topics include: 1. Welcome to new cousins 2. Bower Cottage 3. 5 August Reunion 4. Dining Room Spotlight If you've been with the family [the BOWER-L list] for at least three weeks, you'll probably want to skip the following paragraphÂ… TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur lines or any of the variant spellings that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. If you haven't visited the homesite of this list yet, you are encouraged to do so. The Bower Family Homestead [a.k.a., the Homestead] is our homesite and the gathering place for much of our information. It waits to join us all in welcoming you into the family at <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowerhomestead>, or you can use or shortcut URL of <http://embark.to/Homestead>. BOWER COTTAGE In short, expect it to open sometime this week! *yaaay, clap, clap* The site is being proofread and scrutinized for graphic deficiencies right now. That step should be completed sometime today or tomorrow. Our two project teams, the Continuum and Look Up Project have already seen the site because they needed to approve the pages their respective projects will be working from. There are no names, no data onsite yet - you haven't been missing a thing. The Cottage is simply the frameworks right now. All of us will move in on the same day at the same time ... probably Wednesday or Thursday. If you plan to participate as a volunteer doing Look Ups you might start pulling those resources together that you're willing to look in for the family and visitors. You can begin sending them to me today so I can build your volunteer page. The GEDCOM project will be housed at the Cottage. I have the guideline page in place now and hopefully, will be ready to build that project by the end of this week. I'll call for your GEDCOMs after the Cottage is opened up. After all, you need to see the guidelines... :) You know what, family? ...I've been thinking while typing the last three paragraphs ... everyone that has seen the Cottage so far has said it looks great and several cousins have said to "open it now." I had wanted to get it totally completed before letting everyone in, but when you move into a new home it's never completed - oh, the structure is there, but the furnishings aren't. So, let's open Bower Cottage ... TODAY! I still have pages to upload and not everyone participates in the Coffee, so I'll send a separate message out sometime within two hours after the Coffee (provided I can get into the file manager to upload the files, that is). Watch for it, okay? THE 5 AUGUST REUNION Cousins have already begun sending in their "dishes" (files) to me for the Reunion. Thank you so much! I'll need all the advance time I can get to prepare the table (set to HTML and upload files). Our potluck "meal" will be files of Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur data donated by each of the cousins in all the family groups to "feed" the family - a "dish" such as a list, a county census extraction, a biography, 3-4 generations of a family, a couple wills, a few deeds, a county's/country's obituaries for a given period, immigration/emigration records, pictures, copies of certificates [deceased only - no living], etc. We all have material gathered during our searches. As with any potluck, you can be creative! You can submit one dish, or as many as you'd like. Following the reunion, the data will be housed at the Homestead and you will be given the credit for anything you submit with an email link for the surfing public to contact you. I take no credit for any of your work. Your dishes should be sent directly to me so I can "set the table" [put the files online]. Deadlines for submitting your "food" is 10 July 2000. You can begin sending your dishes in now, if you have them ready. What Bower/Bauer/Baur "recipe" would you like to share and "feed" the family with? DINING ROOM Do you have an ancestral line who's earliest progenitor is dated after 1790? Would you like to formally introduce your ancestor and his/her descendants to the family and the world? We have spotlight areas in two rooms at the Homestead - one in the parlor, the other in the dining room. If you'd like to spotlight your ancestor please let me know privately at <ladyaudris@earthlink.net> and I'll let you know what you need to do. The family ...it's what we're all about. I really enjoyed this time with you. I hope your upcoming week is filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'
Correction on the Bauer from Russia. Lizzie Bauer married Jacob Free in 1887, not 1867. Jill
I am seeking information on a Lizzie Bauer who came from Russia (area unknown, but likely Bessarabia) in 1886. She was born in 1866 in Russia with parents (names unknown) born in Germany. Family history has her ethnic background varied, including German Russian, French/German, Jewish, gypsy (she may have been all these things). I do not know the names of her siblings with certainty, but some may have been John, Henry and Katherine. In 1867 she was living in the Dakotas and married Jacob Free. She had 11 children including Jacob, Lizzie, Barbaria, Carfina, Lidia, Rose, Adam, Frederica. She died young of unknown causes about 1909. Absolutely nothing else is known of her. I would appreciate any information, including wild guesses!! Jill LackAssc@execpc.com

No Baur.. : BAUER (1) Database: Virginia Biographical Encyclopedia Combined Matches: 1 Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Volume V His education was supplied by the public schools of New York City and the College of the City of New York. Having completed the course at the latter institution, he entered Columbia Law School, from which he received the degree of LL. B., in 1878. Being then but twenty years of age he could not be admitted to the bar until the following year, when he at once entered upon the practice of his profession. As a young man he is said to have tried more cases in a single year than any other lawyer of the New York bar. By the time he attained the age of twenty-four years Mr. Untermeyer represented practically all the important brewing interests in the city, acting as counsel for the Local, State and United States Brewers' associations, and previous to this had acted as senior counsel in two of the most celebrated divorce cases of the state, both of which were bitterly contested. One was the suit of Alfred N. Beadleston, head of the brewing firm of Beadleston & Woerz, and the other was the suit of William L. Flanagan against his wife, a well known society woman. In both cases the evidence was gathered from various sections of the continent of Europe. Another important case tried early in Mr. Untermyer's career was the noted one of Betz versus Bauer and Daily, which grew out of a conspiracy between Henry Daily, Jr., then a prominent lawyer of New York, and his client, junior partner of the firm of Betz & Bauer, seeking to defraud the senior partner through notes signed in the name of the firm by the junior, acting under the advice of Daily. A judgment of fifty-two thousand dollars was obtained against the latter, who was thereafter disbarred. BOWER (2) Database: Virginia Biographical Encyclopedia Combined Matches: 2 Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Volume II VIII--Prominent Persons born August 1, 1753, son of Captain Nathaniel West Dandridge, of the British navy, and Dorothea, his wife, daughter of Alexander Spotswood, governor of Virginia. In 1775, probably through the influence of his brother-in-law, Patrick Henry, he became associated with the Hendersons, Boones, and others, in the settlement of Kentucky, and was one of the eighteen men who met near the fort at Boonesborough, in May, 1775, to set up a government. News came of the battle of Lexington, however, and most of the men came back to the defence of the colonies. Family letters indicate that Dandridge was for a time attached to Washington's staff; his name does not appear on any staff list, however, and the inference is that he was only temporarily with Washington, he being a cousin of Mrs. Washington. He was made lieutenant in the Fourth Virginia Dragoons, June 13, 1776; captain of Virginia Artillery, November 30, 1776; captain of the First Continental Dragoons, March 15, 1777; and resigned April 14, 1780. After the war, he settled in what is now Jefferson county, West Virginia, about eight miles from Martinsburg. He married about June, 1779, Anne, daughter of Gen. Adam Stephen, of "the Bower," Jefferson county, Virginia. He died at his estate, in April, 1785, leaving an only child, Adam Stephen Dandridge. His widow married Moses Hunter, and reared a large family. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Volume IV Mr. Serpell married, September 14, 1869, Georgianna Clarke, born June 25, 1841, in Prince George county, Maryland, daughter of Robert and Alethea (Cheney) Clarke. Children: 1. Alethea, now a resident of Norfolk. 2. Nora Latrobe, now a resident of Norfolk. 3. Jane Deakins, married, January 30, 1904, Chaplain B. R. Patrick, United States navy; children: Bower Reynolds, Goldsborough S., Jane Clark, Elizabeth Withers, and Alethea Cheney. 4. Alice, married Dr. E. C. Taliaferro (q. v.). 5. Goldsborough, married, January 4, 1912, Susan Watkins, who died in 1913. 6. Gulelma, a resident of Norfolk. 7. Nell Louise, married, November 16, 1904, Stockton Heth Tyler; children: Goldsborough Serpell and James Hoge (3). 8. Albert Clark, married, February, 1906, Achsa Maria Dorsey. Miss Alethea Serpell is the regent of Great Bridge Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, gaining admission to that society through the patriotic service of her great-grandfather, Captain Leonard Deakins. BOWERS (1) Database: Virginia Biographical Encyclopedia Combined Matches: 1 Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Volume III I--Governors of the State--1861-1915 was born at Williamsburg, Virginia, July 31, 1843, son of John Mann and Mary Hunter (Bowers) Mann, his wife. The first five or six years of his life, he attended school in his native place, and afterward the Brownsburg (Virginia) Academy. He was deputy clerk of Nottoway county, 1859-61, and in June of the latter year he enlisted as a private in Company E. Twelfth Regiment Virginia Volunteers, a part of Gen. Mahone's division. He acted as a scout in the operations at Petersburg, was taken prisoner in 1863 and escaped, but on account of injuries received in this line of duty, he was obliged to leave the service, and resumed his work as deputy clerk of Nottoway county. He studied law without assistance, and was admitted to the bar in 1867. In 1890 he became county judge of Nottoway county, serving until 1892, when he resigned. He was an active and effective campaign speaker, and in 1899 was a member of the Democratic State executive committee; during the same period he was a state senator, and chairman of the committee on revison of laws of Virginia. He was the author of the "Mann Law," under the operations of which were closed about eight hundred saloons in the country districts where there was no police protection; and he was also patron of the high school bill, passed in 1906, and under which some four hundred and fifty high school buildings have been erected. In 1910 he was elected governor, and his administration proved most notable, especially in giving practical effect to the temperance and public school legislation which he advocated so strenuously during his senatorial service. The termination of his term of office did not mean absolute retirement, as Gov. Mann has been very active since that date in making campaign speeches and taking part in public affairs. He resides at his plantation in Nottoway county, and is much interested in farming. He married (first) Sallie Fitzgerald, who died November 2, 1882, and (second) at Petersburg, Etta, daughter of Hon. Alexander and Anna Wilson Donnan. Good luck brenda Brenda K. Hi again family, I thought to put this in today's Coffee message, but decided against it since not everyone participates in them. On August 5th, 1998 at 9 p.m. European time [equating to 3 p.m. on the U.S. east coast] the Bower Family Homestead held its housewarming and the Bower discussion group was officially launched. Since then our family has grown to four separate research groups. In all four groups we are nearly 450 cousins now, coming together from around the world. Our two-year anniversary is coming up in just about 2 months and we'll be celebrating with a potluck cyber-reunion/picnic on August 5th. I hope you all have a super, super Sunday! Colleen

The Retreat If you've been with the family [the BOWER-L list] for at least three weeks, you'll probably want to skip the following paragraphÂ… TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. MEMORIAL DAY Tomorrow we Americans celebrate one of our most sacred and patriotic holidays - Memorial Day. Initially dedicated in May, 1868 as "Decoration Day" to remember those killed during the Civil War, its significance evolved to honoring the dead of all U.S. wars. For veterans, Memorial Day is the time to remember those with whom they served in battle, but did not return. For civilians, veterans and military alike, tomorrow is a time to pause, to reflect, on the valor and consequence of the sacrifices made by the men and women who served our nation, and gave that which was most precious.... their lives. As genealogists and family historians, we know that to appreciate who we are today, we must appreciate who we were in the past. Had my line of military forbears not suffered through their perils, I might not be here today. How could I not then, honor them today or any other day? But you know cousins, I sit here and realize that it wasn't just Bower's [my spelling] who went to battle, nor were they only from the U.S. Many of us - American, Canadian, English, Australian, Welsh, German, French, New Zealanders -- had a Bower, Bowers, Bauer, or Baur, etc. somewhere in our lines who became a military casualty - whether it was during the 20th century or the 16th - it doesn't matter the surname spelling or the nationality. So, family - let's ALL celebrate together on Monday, and pay silent tribute not only to those fallen from our respective nations, but our own Bauer, Bower, Bowers, Baur, etc. war dead. Masses went to fight upon foreign soils Their faces have been forgotten, But the wounds, the pains and the cries remain. Tired eyes mourning from within, looking out at Blood covered promises and sorrow worn victories. Searching for, yet not wanting to find, ...Buddies that have fallen, the victims of war. Pride in serving, the pain in remembering Colors of the crimson soaked sod ...and blurred visions of the mind. How thankful we should be, We should sing the tune of memories Of forgotten heroes standing at past history's door They went and came home, many returned in part... Let us remember those who returned in lifeless form ...and never stop looking for those labeled M.I.A. and P.O.W. Memorial Day, a time to pay tribute for the ultimate sacrifice. Celebrate with your picnics, beach outings and reunions, But teach your children about the sacrifices made, Pride in the United States and the courage of the past. Men and women, no matter how large or small the part, Left their all behind, ...footprints of war imprinted in the annals of time. Let us give them bitter-sweet honor of a hero-respect ...and a heartrending thanks. Extracted in part from a poem entitled "Remembering Their All" by Colleen Cook "Let us, then, at the time appointed, gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with choicest flowers of springtime... let us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us as sacred charges upon the Nation's gratitude -- the soldier's and sailor's widow and orphan." -- General John Logan. General Order No. 11, 5 May 1868. QUERIES AT THE HOMESTEAD Several cousins have reported to me that we have older queries at our home whose e-mail addresses are bad. Please, if you have a query at the Homestead from 1998 or 1999, check to make sure your e-mail address is current. If it isn't, let me know and I'll change it immediately. THE RETREAT Have you joined our private site at <myfamily.com>? No? Well, zip an email off to Vicky Bowers-Gielau and tell her you want to participate. She'll send you an invitation to which you must respond. We've been having some down and friendly chats in our private chatroom the last several weeks and the cousins who have joined in are enjoying the additional closeness these friendly discussion have generated. There will be a chat this afternoon at 1 p.m. US PST [4 p.m. US EST]. If you send Vicky your request early enough this morning, she can get you signed up in time for today's gabfest! Otherwise, we'll be back in the chatroom on Wednesday at the same time. Come join us! We'd love to get to know you better! To those cousins with June birthdays, the family and I wish you a very happy and special day. You are loved!! Family...it's what we're all about. I really enjoyed this time with you. I hope your upcoming week is filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'
