    1. [BAUER] SUNDAY MORNING COFFEE
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. ) ( ) Good Morning Family! .-.,--^--. ( Come on in. . . \\|`----'| - The coffee pot's on. . . \| |// ...and we even have decaf, | |/ tea, and hot chocolate! \ / ------ Today's topics include: 1. Welcome to new cousins 2. Please vote 3. The Retreat 4. Cousins helping cousins 5. Happy Father's Day! 6. Kuzin's Korner If you've been with the family [the BOWER-L list] for at least three weeks, you'll probably want to skip the following paragraphÂ… TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur lines or any of the variant spellings that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. If you haven't visited the homesite of this list yet, you are encouraged to do so. The Bower Family Homestead [a.k.a., the Homestead] is our homesite and the gathering place for much of our information. It waits to join us all in welcoming you into the family at <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowerhomestead>, or you can use or shortcut URL of <http://embark.to/Homestead>. We also have a newly opened sister site, the Bower Cottage, that we're currently preparing to fill. At present only the frameworks are there -- NO names or data are there yet. This coming week we should begin to enter information. The Cottage is at <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowercottage>, or you can use the shortcut URL of <http://embark.to/bowercottage>. PLEASE VOTE Our name has fallen off at the World Wide Top 100 site. Where we used to be on the first two pages and received a great deal of traffic, we are now submerged somewhere in the back 20. I need your help here. When you go to the front page at the Homestead please click on the logo in the top right corner; at the Cottage it's a link on the second page near the bottom. To keep our sites in view of the public we need to click on each one every day. You can return to the Homestead or Cottage simply by hitting the 'Back' button on your browser twice. It only takes a few seconds to do this simple vote, but it makes such a difference toward our data being seen. THE RETREAT Participation at the Retreat is almost next to nothing. Only one or two people are showing up for the bi-weekly chats. Are the scheduled times for these visits not good for you? Would you participate if the chats were held on different days? Please let Vicky Bowers-Gielau <vicky2000@myfamily.com> or me <ladyaudris@earthlink.net> know what days and hours would be best for you. The Retreat is for everyone, though only several of us are enjoying its amenities and comaraderie. COUSINS HELPING COUSINS I'm sure you've all noticed Brenda Moore's multitude of messages filled with data and helpful information for all of us. What you may not realize is that she is checking for all four basic names - Bauer, Baur, Bower and Bowers - everytime she digs through a reference. What a wonderful extra measure this is! We have over 80 variant spellings we need to watch for when we're checking sources, but if you'll do even our four basic surnames the extra time takes only a few seconds more and can make such a difference to our homebound cousins or those who don't have ready access to research facilities. We all need help and we can all provide a lot of assistance to each other with that one extra step. The next time you pick up a reference looking for your surname, won't you please also look for variant spellings? HAPPY FATHER'S DAY! The following poem is dedicated to each of the fathers in our family: A Dad is a person who is loving and kind, And often he knows what you have on your mind. He's someone who listens, suggests, and defends. A dad can be one of your very best friends! He's proud of your triumphs, but when things go wrong, A dad can be patient and helpful and strong In all that you do, a dad's love plays a part. There's always a place for him deep in your heart. And each year that passes, you're even more glad, More grateful and proud just to call him your dad! ~~Author Unknown.~~ Happy Father's Day, guys! You are loved! :) KUZIN'S KORNER In just one week one of our own will be heading for Sydney, Australia to take part in this year's summer Olympics. Jacquie "Jak" Daniels <Jak@daniels.flexnet.co.uk> is a Bower cousin on the English archery team. Can anyone be more of a 'Bower' than her? :) She'll be in Australia until the end of September. So, family, when you're watching this year's Olympics and you happen to spot Jak, you can yell out, "there's my cousin!" I know I will! :) Jak, we wish you well on your trip and look forward to seeing you at the Olympics. We know you'll do well ... after all, what else could a 'Bower' do? :) Family ... it's what we're all about. My coffee cup is empty once again. I really enjoyed this time with you. It was so nice. I hope you all have a fantastic upcoming week. I wish you all a week filled with health, fun, productivity, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'

    3. Hi family, Increasingly I am receiving notices from you that you're unable to access the Homestead or the Cottage. Over the next 2-3 days they are installing a new server. Extracting from their daily updates on the situation, here's the scoop direct from Crosswinds: Saturday, June 17th, 2000 1:58:10pm "We are now going to be bringing down the server to attach its disks to the new server and begin the copy process. During this time FTP and uploads and new signups will not be available. "We are going to be bringing up and configuring the replacement server, ensuring no damage was done in shipping and to get it ready to replace the old server. When that is done, the old server will be taken offline and its disks connected to the new server to begin the data transfer. "At this point, signups, uploads and ftp will be turned off. This will ensure you don't make changes we miss and it improves the speed at which the data can be copied. "During this copy, ..... read access to your sites will still be allowed. Thus you will still get hits to your sites 8-) "We expect the data copy to take up to 2-3 days...." ~~~~~~~~~~~~ As of this writing (12:23 p.m. US MST), both sites are offline and the Crosswinds server is down. If you try to access either site you'll automatically be taken to the following URL <http://home.crosswinds.net/down.php> and receive this message: Oops... Our member server is currently down. We are aware of the problem and are moving to get it back up as soon as possible. Please watch the updates page for details. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ All I can tell you is to keep trying through the next couple days to see if you can access our sites. Since we're supposed to be able to read the sites, but not update them, I can only presume at this point in time our particular sites are being uploaded onto the new server. To read the updates for yourselves, they're at: <http://home.crosswinds.net/updates/>. Once you've read the updates, you'll know as much as me. And now you know the rest of the story....... I hope you're all having a super, sunny Saturday. Me? Eastern Colorado is socked in with clouds and cool temps. I'm sitting here with leggings on and my space heater running full blast! :) Colleen

    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi Family, FINALLY! Our GEDCOM project is FINALLY off the backburner and, as of today, is officially launched!!!!! *yippee ..... clap, clap, clap* :0 It isn't that big - just 3,527 individuals in 1,284 families, but cousins, THIS PROJECT IS ONLINE!!! I am sorry to report though, that there are no Baur's or Bauer's in the database at this time. No researchers of those lines submitted a GEDCOM. :-| However, now that you can all see what our lines can/could like like all put together, I hope our next run of GEDCOM's will be a lot larger. The next update will be in October with submissions called for in September. Are you one of our newest cousins and don't know where to go? Hit this hyperlink and you'll be taken to the front door of the cottage <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowercottage>. Then, head for the kitchen! GO LOOK.....GO LOOK!!! Another project down ....... only 58 more to go!!! :) I hope you're all having a terrifically, wonderful Wednesday evening! Colleen

    1. [BAUER] No Gedcom
    2. I don't know how to send a Gedcom even though I do have my geneology work in the latest Family Tree program. My maiden name was Bauer and all my family was from St Louis the same as myself. My grandfather George Bauer from the Township of Carondelet in St Louis Missouri had a Father John Bauer and a mother Gottliebin Engel. Both from Germany. They lived around 1850 in St Louis My grandfather was born in St Louis in 1860. I'm very anxious to trace more family from my ggrandfather John Bauer. Please let me know if anyone has a possible connection to our family Marge

The latter of these two record sources have been combined into a printed index entitled: Index of Surnames of Householders in Griffith's Primary Valuation and the Tithe Applotment Books, commonly called the Householders Index. This database is a re-index of the original records used to produce the original Householders Index. Each record provides the name of householder and town of residence. The records in this database currently only cover Antrim County in Northern Ireland. Future updates will include other counties. It provides the names of about 10,000 persons. For researchers of Irish ancestors, this index can be an invaluable tool. Brenda K. 3. ) ( ) Good Morning Family! .-.,--^--. ( Come on in. . . \\|`----'| - The coffee pot's on. . . \| |// ...and we even have decaf, | |/ tea, and hot chocolate! \ / ------ Today's topics include: 1. Welcome to new cousins 2. Bower Cottage 3. GEDCOM Project 4. Lookup Project 5. A request from Colleen 6. Cottage queries If you've been with the family [the BOWER-L list] for at least three weeks, you'll probably want to skip the following paragraphÂ… TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. BOWER COTTAGE I remember waaaay back, when the BOWER-L first came together and the Homestead's walls still reeked of freshness, that I asked all the cousins who were in the family at the time to think of what our home would look like in a year or two down the road as far as crowding. We were at GeoCities then and our home was only allocated 11-megabytes maximum of space. That may sound like an enormous amount, but cousins, we were EATING bytes up at a terrific rate - even at the beginning. We don't have that problem at Crosswinds now, but we do need to start looking ahead. At the present, the Cottage is set up to house four large projects -- our vital records certificates the Continuum (state/country project) the Lookup Project the GEDCOM Project Also there are the beginner helps. Within the next two weeks I hope to have the novice/advanced research helps/tips online. Cousins please, think a year down the line. Does anyone have any suggestions for any other project or genealogical area of interest you might like to see housed there? We don't have to start working on new ideas right away, nor do we need/want to make the Cottage as large as the Homestead, but I do need advance notice so I can begin plotting where to put any new projects/fields before we start filling the Cottage up....and, once we start entering our data there, it WILL fill up fast! GEDCOM PROJECT This coming week the GEDCOM project will FINALLY get off the veritable back-burners it's been sitting on for over a year. I currently have only three cousins' GEDCOMs ready to put online - one being the one I will add. If you want to put yours online this first time out, please send it to me as an attachment (not a zip file since I can't open it) no later than Tuesday, 13 June. I hope to upload our first GEDCOMs on Wednesday. Following are the guidelines for GEDCOM submissions: 1.) Absolutely NO living persons are to be included in your GEDCOM. 2.) Your GEDCOM must be Bower[s], Bauer, Baur or a variant spelling-related and can be of any size. Please do not include your extended lines. You can, however, include the parents of spouses who marry into our surnames of interest. 3.) I will be using Personal Ancestral File (PAF) to import and export GEDCOMs. Unfortunately, PAF is not compatible with everyone's GEDCOMs and may throw numerous errors, particularly your notes. I have been searching for a genealogy program whose import/export process is compatible with many, many genealogy programs rather than just a few but no luck yet. This run of the GEDCOM database will not be updated again until October. LOOKUP PROJECT Our current lookup volunteers are preparing their lists of references to be entered online. You should expect this project to officially launch next weekend. Would you like to be a lookup volunteer? If so, please send me a list of the resources you'll offer for free lookups along with a 5-letter code to be used as your volunteer login. A REQUEST FROM COLLEEN The time since our move from GeoCities and our site-fight win has been a terribly busy period for me. I've let things go at the Homestead that seriously need working on. But, the Cottage is almost ready and I can finally see the veritable light at the end of this tunnel! :) I would like to ask that each of you not forget about our upcoimg reunion and to please get your "dishes" to me as soon as possible before the 10 July deadline. The more lead-time I have to prepare, the better I'll be able to gauge my time as far as balancing everything (Homestead, Cottage, projects, reunion, etc.). Thanks, everyone. COTTAGE QUERIES Do you have a query at the Homestead? Are you wondering whether or not then, if you should also post one at the Cottage? The answer is YES! Once we start getting traffic, if a visitor comes only to the Cottage your Homestead query won't be seen. Keep in mind that not everyone who visits the Cottage will necessarily want to also go to the Homestead. (and why not?) :) Family ... it's what we're all about. I really enjoyed this time with you. It was so nice. I hope you all have a fantastic upcoming week. I wish you all a week filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/.
