    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: dbquixote61 Surnames: Bateson Batson Classification: census Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bateson/77.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: She was born about 1807. She is in findagrave.com as Pheby Batson Walters at: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Walters&GSfn=Pheby&GSbyrel=in&GSdyrel=in&GSob=n&GRid=24459442& But I think her parents listed there may be a mistake. While Samuel Batson aka Betson was my gggg grandpa, and he did have a daughter we believe was named Phoebe born in Ohio between 1805-1809 we believe his likely brother Thomas named a daughter after, he was in Clinton County, Ohio in 1820 with his daughter living with him at the time, and Phoebe born 1807 married Jacob Walters in Perry County, Ohio in 1822. Since Lewis Bateson turns up there in Hopewell, Perry County, Ohio where Jacob is living in 1830, and Jacob Walters buys land from a Benjamin Bateson in 12 March 1853 in De Witt County, Illinois according to this web site: http://www.bateson-family.com/html/bateson.html , and since Benjamin Bateson is born 1805 in Ohio according to the 1850 US Census in De Witt County, Illinois, and born 1805 in Massachusetts in the 1860 US Census in Rutledge, De Witt County, Illinois, I think Lewis is likely her dad, and that Benjamin is likely her brother. There is a Lewis Bateson apparently living with his dad, Lewis?, in the Hopewell, Perry County, Ohio in 1830 (or his dad living with him). He is living without his parents in 1840, with his own family in the same place, Hopewell, Perry County, Ohio. He was born abt. 1798 in either Maryland or Massachusetts in Madison, Perry County, Ohio in 1850, Vermont, Fulton County, Illinois in 1860, 1870. I think he could likely be a brother to Benjamin and Phoebe Bateson. There is a Lewis Bateson later on in Worcester County, Massachusetts in the (possibly a descendant of a brother of Lewis who stayed back in Massachusetts. Going the Maryland route, there's a William Biddison in 1703 in N Side Papascounty, Baltimore County, Maryland. There's a William Bateson in 1778 in Montgomery County, Maryland. There's a Wm Bateson in Richland, Fairfield County, Ohio in 1820 born 1776-1794 (more likely closer to 1776-1780, because he has a son born 1805-1810). While he has a son Benjamin's age living with him, no son Lewis nor daughter Phoebe's age is with him. So he might be an uncle of Phoebe's. Then in Bearfield, Perry County, Ohio in 1820 there's a William Biddeson. No one Phoebe's age or Benjamin's age is living with him. In 1830 he is William Bideson in the same township. In 1850 he is there still in Bearfield, Perry County, Ohio as Wm. Biddison born abt. 1780 in Maryland. In 1860 and 1870 he is in Pleasant, Perry County, Ohio as William Biddison and William Bidison respectively. In one of the last few census his birth state is spelled out as Maryland. With the Batesons it always is Ma or! Md for the birth place, so I'd look both places. In 1840 there's a Jacob Bateson in Thorn, Perry County, Ohio born 1811-1820 possibly a younger brother or nephew of Phoebe's Also in Thorn, Perry County, Ohio in 1840 is a Wm. Bateson born 1811-1820, likely Jacob's brother. They are next door neighbors in 1850 in Walnut, Fairfield County, Ohio with William born abt. 1818 in Ohio, and Jacob born abt. 1815 in Ohio. They are likely brothers, may be sons of Lewis Bateson born 1798. There is also a James Batson in Jackson, Perry County, Ohio in 1840 born 1811-1820. He is James Batson possibly the one in Clayton, Perry County, Ohio in 1850 as born 1812 in Virginia. He is not likely to be Jacob's and William's brother. Here are Perry County, Ohio marriages of Bateson family members about the time of Phoebe's marriage: Elizabeth Beatson to James Spenny 3 Aug 1820 Lewis Batson to Nancy Forsith 28 Sep 1820 Benjamin Bateson to Elizabeth McKenney 4 May 1823 Lydia Bateson to John Sutton 27 Jan 1825 Sarah Bateson to Joshua Walters 1 March 1827 Harriet Bateson to William Johnson 6 March 1827 Phoebe Bateson to Jacob Walters 22 March 1827 These are likely siblings. This means the children of Louis or Lewis? Bateson likely included: 1. Elizabeth, 2. Lewis aka Louis born abt. 1798 Maryland (in some census as Massachusetts), 3. Benjamin born 1805 Ohio or Maryland likely Maryland, since Lydia after him was born in Pennsylvania 4. Lydia born 1806 Pennsylvania according to 1850 census in Washington, Muskingum County, Ohio (in 1880 census same place her dad was born definitely in Maryland with a definite Md., mom born in Pennsylvania), 5. Phoebe born 1807 Ohio, moved to Wilson, De Witt County, Illinois 6. Sarah likely died with her husband shortly after 1830 (she and Joshua disappeared after that & their likely children ended up living with older Henry Walters in Perry Co., Ohio 7. Harriett The other 2 younger Batesons (possible children of Lewis Bateson) 1. Jacob born 1815 in Ohio, 2. William born 1818 in Ohio, Hope this helps. I'm now 90% sure it had been spelled "Batson" prior to their move to Ohio. I'm trying to find census data from 1820. If I'm lucky I'll find our James listed at about the age of 10.
