He worked on the boats going up and down the Mississippi River. He married Mary Ann Jones JACAWAY in 1847 in New Orleans, Louisiana. They had a son, Nephi James BATES born in 1848 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Apparently, James was on his way of the River to St. Louis when he and many others on the boat came down with cholera and died. They were buried in a joint grave in St. Louis. I am looking for his parents or any information on this family.
