Sue: I am stuck on one Welcome Bates (b. 1801; d. 1868) who married Ann Eliza James (dau. of Jonathan & Ruth (Barber) James). I have determined at this time that they had at least four children: Thomas J. (b. 1832--mine; md. Abby Susan Stone), Welcome O. (b. April 16, 1835; d. __? buried Pocasset Cemetery Cranston), John Brown Francis Bates (b. Jan. 14, 1840 Long Island, NY; d. Feb. 8, 1887), and Jonathan J. Bates (md. Abby ___?). Some of these are buried in Queens River Baptist Cemetery in South Kingstown, RI. I can't seem (at this time) to find the parents of Welcome Bates b. 1801. I have written to RI for his death certificate because I do have an exact date of death and am waiting to hear back from them. I have also had some correspondence with a gal in NJ who has been trying to get past a John Bates, same time frame, who married a Betsey ____?. We think that he and Welcome may have been brothers. So, until I get past Welcome, I don't see how I can even begin to tie into Perry's tree. If you have any light at all to shed on this family (even if it does not relate to what I have above), please let me know. Thanks. My husband is a directline descendant of Francis-1, etc. If there is anything that I can help with, please let me know. I think this is a pretty hard name to research. However, there are bits and pieces of it done. I have a document from one Perry Streeter in NY that details four generations from approximately mid-1600s to mid-1700s in MA & RI. The line he has documented is Frances-1, Frances-2, Frances-3, William-4. I'm sure that my particular line will tie in with one of these fellows, I just don't know where/how. Other folks have also researched their particular Bates line and put it out on the web. The name is pretty big in CT, RI, and MA (I am searching in RI, expecting to go sometime into MA if I ever find my guy's parents). If you would like a copy of Perry's document or want his Email address, drop me an Email. Another option (if you haven't already) is to run a search on different phrases such as "Bates Family", "Joel Bates," etc. on a metasearcher and see if you don't hit on several individual Bates family pages. The two metasearchers that I use are: http://www.metacrawler.com/index_power.html http://www.cyber411.com/main.htm See what you get using the metacrawler and then try the Cyber411. Best wishes in your search. I'm looking for info on Joel F. Bates who married Bertha M. Burns aprox 1893. They lived in Yonkers, NY and had a son named Arthur. Arthur married Ethel Mabelle Seeley, and had 3 children. Bertha May Bates, Harold George Bates (my dad), and Arthur Bates. Most of this family lived in the Massachusetts area. Any help would be appreciated!
