Sarah Rosina Latham was born 3 Nov 1855 in Springfield IL and died 2 Nov 1930 in Long Creek OR. She was married to Joseph William Bates (see below his dates and their children). Her mother was Sarah E. Latham who died 6 Jun 1922 in OR; Her father's name is unknown but he reportedly owned a sect of land where St. Louis is. Sarah Rosina was the first school teacher in Harney Co., OR. She came across on the Oregon Trail and had her left arm amputated. the first story is by an arrow in an indian attack; the second story is that a rifle leaning against a wagon fell and discharged shooting her in the arm. Reportedly an Army troop was following their wagon train and a doctor from the troop amputated her arm and saved her life. Her mother, Sarah E. Latham remarried Frank Willard 6 Nov 1873. However, it is believed that he had a brother (name unknown) who was a doctor in Alabama. It is believed their father was in the Union army and died at Andersonville prison.
