Greetings all, Just taking a shot in the dark here in hopes that someone on this list might have some information on one of my husband's great-great-uncles, Isiah V. Bates. Isiah was born in Newstead (now Akron), Erie Co. NY about 1843 and is the son of Stephen VanRennsalaer Bates and his wife, Julia Anna Call. Isiah enlisted out of Toulon, Stark Co. IL June 1861, serving as a Sgt. in Company B, Elmera Rifles during the Civil War and served as one of the regimental musicians. Letters written to his father during the war indicate that his military service took him to KS, among other places, and the 1870 Federal Census shows an Isiah V. Bates as living in that state.
