My ancestor, Samuel Bates was born 9 Aug. 1760 in Haddam, Conn. His father was probably David Bates from Haddam. At the age of 16, he enlisted in a New Hampshire regiment & served 3-1/2 Yrs. before returning to Vermont. He married Abigail Willard 1 Jun. 1786. Their children were: Clarissa, Lindamind, Henry Willard, & Ira B. My gggrandfather, Henry Willard Bates, was born 4 Feb. 1794, in Randolph, Vt. In 1812 they moved to Kendall, Orleans Co.,N.Y. A fire in the 1890's in Kendall, destroyed all birth & marriage records there. I am trying to find Bates descendants to obtain family records.
