Looking for the parents of: Joseph William BATES b 26 Oct 1849 LA\NY\TX???; d 5 May 1921 OR; Wife Sarah Rosina LATHAM b 3/11/1855 IL; d 2/11/1930 OR; m 13 Oct 1876 OR Children: Amy Bates b 7 Dec 1877; d Oct 1972 Ora Bates b Mar 1881 Edna Bates b 8 July 1883; d Jul 1975 Donald Bates b Dec 1887 Elbert Bates b 8 Dec 1888 William Joseph Bates b 26 Sep 1889; d 27 Feb 1975 Edwin Bates 3 Jul 1894; d May 1973 Sarah V. Bates two children died in infancy. Joseph was in the the Bannock Indian War. All records report his parents as unknown. However, it is believed that he had a brother (name unknown) who was a doctor in Alabama. It is believed their father was in the Union army and died at Andersonville prison. Joseph's wife Sarah Rosina had one arm and was school teacher in Harney Co. Oregon. Excerpts from "Harney County, Ore And Its Range Land," Brimlow, George Francis: Page 66: ".....A term of one quarter was taught by Sarah Latham, who received $100 from subscription. ...." Pages 77, 78: ".....Pete French kept an account book at his headquarter which he designated 'Steins Mountain.' The one for 1876-1879..... On the first page of this bookkeeping journal, in 1876, the owner writes in his indubitable fashion as to his assets: ..... Joe Bates owes me 25.00......" Page 189: .....the "Herald"..... Under the hed, "Journalism from Dame Rumor," the same paper said on May 9, 1888: Last Monday as Mrs. Bates and her son, a lad about ten years old, were driving across a bridge over Silvies River near Z. L. Thomas' place, the horses shied, turning the wagon over into the stream. The boy was caught under the wagon, and being unable to extricate himself, was drowned. Later information is, that both Mr. and Mrs. Bates were in the wagon, and that the bridge broke down, but as the child was drowned in either case it does not make much difference."
