    3. There were BATES in Montgomery County, PA in 1787, which before 1784 was part of Philadelphia County. My great-grandfather, George Casner Bates, b. 1787 had 16 !!! children, at least four of whom moved west. in the middle of the 1800's , There was a different family of BATES in Pennsylvania in Luzerne County. All no doubt descended from the Thomas BATES who arrived in Philadelphia in 1687. Making the links is the tricky part. There were BATES who arrived in Virginia in 16 something, and BATES who arrived in the Massachusetts Colony early on -- all different families, or sons of the same people if you back far enough. Good luck. I can't find George Casner BATES baptismal record. or who his parents were. I'm looking at all the wills of all the BATES in Montgomery County and then Philadelphia in that time period. I may never find him.
