Rob, My Ohio Bates is in Central Ohio not Northwest. This is where my Bates line dead ends also. His name is Sylvanus Bates and though he was born in Vermont (according to the census) he grew up near London, Madison County, Ohio. His approximate birth year is 1812. He had several brothers, Zenus, Ansel, Elijah, and Asa. Sylvanus Bates married Eunice Turner, April 2, 1832. They had several children of which Edward Bates was my great-grandfather. Edward Bates served in the Civil War. I have not been able to find Sylvanus Bates death date or place yet (or birth place in Vermont either). Don't know if your Bates is related to mine or not.
