    2. Ruth, Thank you for sharing your intriguing posting with us. I am a descendant of Clement Bates and of many others in Hingham. I have a question to ask you. From a member of Huguenot-L, I learned that Bates was Huguenot (without providing the first name). Was our Clement Bates of Huguenot descent? I would be interested in learning more about Clement Bates's ancestors in that I understand that Hertfordshire and Kent in England were reserved by the King for Huguenots to settle in when expelled or fleeing from France.
