    3. Have hit a BATES brick wall. I have a John A. BATES born about 1796. He died 1860/1870 in Cherokee County, NC. He was married to Margaret "Lou" CUNNINGHAM born about 1801 and died after 1870, also in Cherokee County, NC. I had thought his name to be John Alexander BATES, but believe now that it is possible the name was John Augustus BATES. I've found in the TVA records of graves relocated during their hydro-dam project, called the Davidson-Bates cemetery. Buried there is an Augustus BATES, no date of birth, died 1862. Buried beside him and presumed to be his wife is Margaret BATES, no date of birth, died 1875. William F. BATES is said to have been a son of John and Margaret, and there is a William F. buried in this cemetery. It is possible that he was connected to the BATES line in Bradley County, Tenn. I have also heard that a lot of people in Cherokee County came from an area called Bates Cove, but cannot find out where that was located. Any help, ideas, etc would be truly appreciated.
