Seeking info for parentage of John Bates (b: 15 Sep 1776??, d: 20 Oct 1851 in Murray Co., GA). On 5 Dec 1799 in SC, John married Barbara Grainger(Crenshaw)(b:16 Oct 1779, d:31 Jul 1848). Their children were John C., Julius R., Elias, Frances, Larriett, Harriet, Sarah, Emeline, Rice Ross and Clayton. One researcher has said John Bates was born in Virginia. He ultimately served as a Major General in the Georgia Militia. He was a state representative for Hall Co., GA, for about 15 years from about 1815 to about 1830. He was also the state representative for Murray Co., GA, for one year. It is said he and his brother Julius came to Hall Co., GA, from SC. They had a sister named Elizabeth who married a Thomas Jackson. Any info/leads would be very much appreciated.
