Does anyone know how many of our Bateses went to Onondaga and nearby counties in NY? I am descended from James Bates (son of Solomon and grandson of Joshua) and his son Benjamin, and I keep being surprised at how many times Onondaga County comes up. James and Benjamin were in the area about 1800, having moved from Chesterfield, MA, and I would like to know more about them. The Town of Pompey Historian wrote back to me that Benjamin, Eunice (probably widow of James and stepmother of Benjamin), and Phineas (Benjamin's brother), were still there in 1820. Benjamin and his wife died and are buried near Fairport, NY, she in 1850, he in 1851. Beyond that, information will probably involve a recommended researcher for $50, to investigate deeds. Two questions I have are: Do you recommend that I go ahead and pay for this? If I were to go there myself, to Pompey, Fairport, and the area, where would be best to go to get information? I am thinking of making this trip in September. Thanks for any guidance any of you have. (Related family names are Anthony SOULES who married Benjamin's dau. Emily in 1819, and Hannah KELLEY, Benjamin's wife.) Jane Brumbaugh
