Lydia Bates Fletcher was my something great grandmother. Her maiden name was Fairbanks and there is a marriage record in Boston to Edward Bates. I would have to look up the date. Torrey calls her "probably daughter of Richard Fairbanks" and I was told at NEHGS to forget trying to pin that down because if Torrey couldn't do it, no one else could. She had one child, John Bates b. 1641 in Boston and then married Fletcher in Concord in 1645.( Concord VR) She had several children with Fletcher in Chelmsford, One, Josiah Fletcher, hung out with his step-brother, John Bates, and got into all sorts of trouble according to the Rev. Fisk's Notebook which documents their girl-chasing etc. She then was censured by the church for calling her sons "rapscallions and hell-bound!". She died in 1704 and is buried in Our Forefathers Burial Ground in Chelmsford. If you are descended from Lydia and Edward you have lots of cousins..Mary Jean Bates Evans
