Maybe someone can use this information that I abstracted while at the National Archives several years ago. These were some BATES (definately not all of them) who applied for a pension for their service in the Union Army after the Civil War, or their widows applied for the pension. Sometimes a minor child was listed on the index card. These records, and others for UNION CIVIL WAR SERVICE ONLY, can be ordered from the National Archives. Ordering info should be on their website. Confederate States provided their veterans with a pension on a STATE level, so they should be ordered from the state in which the soldier later lived. The National Archives does not have these. The file of my BATES ancestor contained a lot of great information, and was quite thick. He had to prove that he was disabled or feeble enough to deserve a pension, so affidavits were in there from friends and relatives, telling how long they'd known him, how old he was, etc.... There's no telling what you'll find! Dear All I have just joined the list. Not much information on my Bates family whom I have only just found. Damaris Bates married John Robinson in Hanslope, Bucks on 20 September 1801. They had three children, Mary, Benjamin and John in Hanslope, before moving to Wicken. Damaris was the daughter of John and Ann Bates. >From the IGI I think that John Bates might have been born in Milton Keynes in 1747, the son of William Bates and Damaris Bell. Anyone with any links? Philippa
I am at a total standstill with David P. and Elizabeth GRIFFIN BATES. Elizabeth's parents had 16 children. One died young, so not much research could be done on him. There are 5 of us "cousins" online, who are working on this Griffin family. We divided the children. Now each of us have three to work on instead of fifteen. Good idea, right? Well, I CHOSE Elizabeth, who married David P. BATES. I know they were married in Bibb County, AL in 1847. They had one child that I know about, Amazon, a girl, born 1848, Bibb County, AL. I have been told there were at least two more children, Martha Sophia, born 1851 and Robert Critidon Griffin BATES, born about 1853. They may have been in GA, but I cannot find them there either. If anyone has a marriage CD for AL or GA, and would look to see if either of these children were married in those two states, I would be ever so grateful. Thank you in advance, Darlene

I never thought to do it, but tracing some of my Bates ancestors backwards may be the correct appoach to finding some of my backward ancestors! Imagine not even showing up to be counted in a census. Tsk, tsk! Jack

Hi, all! Just wanted to let you know about my website, which contains information about the descendants of William BATES of Essex County, b. 1640 and Martha WILLARD, whose descendants settled in Bedford County. Stop by if you think you might be related and drop me a line! Thanks, Laura Martin http://members.aol.com/Llbmartin/index.html
Jack, I thought I had an 1840 AL Census Index for Bates, but I don't find it. The dog probably ate it. :) 1860 GA Census Index lists a Thomas A. Bates, page 254, in Spaldin County. I did not find a Thomas in Bibb County. 1850 Bibb County Census, David P. Bates was born in GA. Who knows, as little as I know about David P. Bates, he may be related to your Thomas A. Personally, I believe he went to MARS to visit his father-in-law, Benjamin GRIFFIN, and never returned. Good Luck, Darlene
